Was going try to create one from scratch, but figured why re-create the wheel, anyone got any good ones they are willing to share the info for? I love this type of stuff.

realmaninc.org/index.htm - This was a site from a coach that used to be on here. He sent me 2 sets of his books before he passed. Excellent materials. www.artofmanliness.com/category/a-mans-life/ - Have some good videos here about honor and such. coachcharacter.com/ - Visited a couple of times To me, there are a lot of materials out there to support character building, but you have to form your own program that is reflective of your core values.

coachcharacter.com/We use this. Great program! Can't say enough about Wade and his program. He comes from a very successful coaching family, great tie in with his stuff for teams well worth checking out.

The stuff Ohio State uses, Focus3, seems like a pretty good program from what I have read on the subject.
My question is how do you guys apply your character building programs logistically? Is this a class where you have all your players together once a day for the entire school year, or is this just during football season? Where I am we have to share athletes, everybody who has any talent is playing multi sports. And since character building seems to me to be a year round process, how do you administer it?

Quick question: how is all of this leadership not taught in the discipline we participate?

Could you clarify that? I'd love to know what you mean.

We implemented a character education program in 2010. Sacrificed 30min of practice time Tuesday and Thursdays during the season. Start right after school on those days for about a 1/2 hour before sending them to practice.

You mean in the daily interactions we have with students and athletes and MODELING character in everything we do? Everything we and our players do.I have teachable moments daily. Am I missing something? I agree with you to a point. I think modeling character will ultimately have the most impact and you won't be successful with any character education if your not modeling good character yourself, However I think that there are a lot of things that your not going to get to that are important and you can reach a greater audience if you do something formal. I think when coaches try to stand up at the end of a hard practice and try to talk for very long players are going to tune out quickly. A lot of what we do is to introduce a topic (responsibility, class, appreciation, gratitude, selflessness, mental toughness) get the kids talking about topics, sharing their thoughts and ideas, it not only drives some of theses lessons home more when players take ownership in and talk about stuff but allows them to know that others are experiencing some of the same problems and internal conflicts that they are as well. I feel it's been a real positive for our program over the years and I've had many players mention it specifically in our exit interviews.

If it isn't purposeful and intentional the results will vary greatly. I want a common language that all coaches know and understand. I want kids to have key words and phrasing that will link back to our meetings, things that all of the kids will know and understand. Watching little Johnny get taken aside and having a one on one teachable moment doesn't do any good for little Jimmy.

I am not giving up practice time to have team devotion, especially when team building can and does happen on a practice field.

It isn't team building, it's people building. A huge focus of ours is coaching from the inside out, coach the heart and mind first then move to the game. We want good and great football players but more importantly great and outstanding young men when they leave our program.

I really like the materials for The R.E.A.L. Man Program. I will actually be speaking about it at the Nike Clinics in Louisville and Mississippi. I use it in class as well. We had a 3D Coaching Seminar with our staff yesterday and it was very good. We will take elements from both with our kids.

I am not giving up practice time to have team devotion, especially when team building can and does happen on a practice field. I don't take practice time and wouldn't. We lift 2 days a week in season, we do film one day and the other day we do leadership. If you aren't making grades the leadership time turns into tutor time. Rule #1- you can't lead others if you can't lead yourself and part of that is making grades. We are also only doing a review of the leadership training in-season...off-season and summer is when the core of the program is instituted. Yes there is a team component but the primary focus is giving athletes the tools they need to become better leaders in all walks of life. We do not intentionally incorporate a devotion (I think religion) but many of the kids bring that aspect into the discussion and we allow them to do this.

This is a major issue at our school..we have talent..but the lack the character traits to be a successful team. My question is should this be addressed/initiated by the HC or can a coordinator like myself try to install these traits via character building activities/excercises?

I have not personally tried it, but I did work with one of the creators. His name is Darrick Ware, and he is a great coach and role model. He and another coach put this together and it is a great resource for your kids. I recommend it because I know he personally lives the lessons that are in that book.

If the HC is not able to or unwilling see if he will allow you to implement something. Keep him involved and see if you can generate some materials and resources to help bring along and develop character education with your team.

Anyone tried this one?
We've used this, worked pretty well, I got lazy and didn't continue it a second year, but will start it again next season, very easy to implement and great discussions happened during that time.

We bought 1 set of the books and we use several things from them, good stuff! Quick question about book, we were only going to by books for our seniors, because of lack of budget, is it worth it, if we only by one volume?
