I am in Texas and currently the trend is for head coaches to have master degrees. Typically this is the Masters in Education with a principal cert. usually from Lamar university who does it the cheapest and for 18 months.
I have no intentions of ever being a principal, so I have been looking into getting a sports management or athletic administration masters.
Has anyone done one of those programs online and for a good price? If so where? This will not really be used as a second profession degree for me, just a bump in pay and an extra thing to add to the resume.

Saturday my high school (A&M Consolidated) will be speaking about RPO's and QB fundamentals. I think we are the 1:30-4:30 time slot. I have to talk about 10 minutes about how we run block/protect the RPO game. Our head coach and OC will be doing most of the talking but I would be glad to have any discussions before or after if someone is interested.
This is the kind of stuff will get into....here is one of my youtube videos on RPO whip dig concept.

Our layout is always about the same week to week. Monday of week 2 looks a lot like Monday of week 9.
Now of course there are some minor tweaks put in from time to time, and of course everyone does a little different during their individual time as well.

Also as far as kids getting a summer and killing the kids and all that.
I don't think too many kids feel that way. I think for the most part they want to be doing something, especially in the smaller town setting. I do not see anything wrong with a kid who is competing in 7 on 7 playing summer league baseball and still works out 3-4 times a week.

I am going to tell you what we are currently doing at a 5a school in Texas. I will also tell you what I would do.
School I am at currently goes 2 hours monday through thursday. We take the week of the 4th of July off and the week before school starts off. We are lifting upper on mon/wed and lower on tue/thur. We also have about 8 different stations outside that we do, from hurdles to medicine balls to whatever else you can think of.
If I was the one putting things together the only thing I would change is just taking the 2 weeks off right after school, and just giving them one day off for the 4th of July. I feel right when school ends, getting the two weeks off would be better then breaking up in the middle of the summer program.

I can't speak for everyone in Texas but I can speak with my experiences. The schedule I listed above, with an 80 hour work week give or take a few hours I believe is fairly typical for an assistant coach.
I was lucky enough to be at a top notch program early in my career, and did win a ring. I was working about 85 hours there a week.
Last year I was at a smaller school that went 13-2 and lost in the game before state. We worked about 65 hours a week.
You also have to take into account that during the summer we work a couple of hours monday-thursday, and have two weeks completely off. Also, for quite a few your second sport is a lot less demanding then football. So during the spring semester you might be home at 5:30 every day besides game days. That has been my experience.

I have been at places that worked 90 hours and up a week as assistants, and places where it was closer to around 60-65. I will say this, the biggest factor for wins and losses I have seen so far is the talent you are putting on the field vs the talent the opponent is putting on the field.
Not saying what we do is not a factor...what I am saying though is an extra couple of hours on a Saturday and Sunday have rarely in my opinion been the difference in winning and losing that week.

To me a key factor is taking care of things that I can while I am at school. I try to grade and plan all my teaching stuff on campus. So when I get that hour long conference, unless I have to be at a meeting or something else, I am getting school stuff done.
If I get home around 7:30 at night monday-wednesday but I do not have anything work related I need to do and can chill out for 3 hours or so then go to bed, I am a happy camper. If I get home and have 3 hours worth of grading and planning to do that is no bueno. So I do as much as I can while at school in the morning/lunch/conference.
Same can be said about football to an extent. I want to get as much as I can done at the office during the time we are there. I do not want to spend a couple of hours peaking at the Cowboys game, checking fantasy football, and watching whatever youtube video is going viral.

I am currently the O-line coach at a 5a school in Texas.
This is what the schedule looks like.
Mon-Wed 7am arrive at school 8-11:30 teach 11:30-12:30 varsity period 30 min lunch 1 hour conference 2-3:00 teach 3-4:00 9th grade period 4:00-6:30 varsity practice 6:30-7:15 watch practice, get laundry going, wrap up duties
So basically a 12 hour day.......Thursday and Friday are the same except obviously you are playing games, so for Thursday night extend the time to about 10pm or 11pm based on home or away.....and on Fridays extend the time to 11pm or Midnight based on home or away.
Mon-Wed 36 hours Thur-Fri 30 hours
Now on Saturday we go 7am-1pm Sundays 1pm-7pm...might go later or earlier depending on what we are doing.
So Sat-Sun is 12 hours
That puts me at 78 hours. This does not include really long road trips on either night that take an hour or two longer, this does not take into consideration hours put in at home with hudl or working on teaching duties.

My head coach recently told me we had some money left in the budget that we need to spend before the year is up in September.
Currently for linemen we have a shoot, 5 man sled, power drive trainers, and boards.
With a big budget, what are some things you might consider buying to help during season or off season? I'm looking for ideas....thanks.

I have always bought the guys a shirt with the motto or whatever on it. I feel the shirt is a good "were special" tool without going to far over the edge. I also always have a pre two a day meeting with the oline at the local bbq joint. We discuss expectations over a rack of ribs, it usually goes well. I only allow the people who have attended at least 80% of the summer workouts to go to it.

The one "bad" beat I have gone through happened a year ago.
First round of playoffs.....down 31-27. 1:15 on the clock, we are on their 25.
We are in doubles, we are throwing PAP off of the jet sweep fake. #2 runs vertical after faking a block, #1 runs a 10 yard in.
They are in 1 high.....safety sees the jet motion and starts to fly up to the line. #2 just flat out runs past the safety and OLB....
QB goes to throw it and as he is pulling the ball back he loses his grip...the ball just slips out...they recover, and we start offseason.
I have been more devastated after a loss....but that was the "bad" beat story I had.

1. Both have certain things that are difficult. Positions matter on this too.
2. I hate working defense in the sense that it changes every week based on the opponent. On Offense I feel I can control some things from week to week.
3. I feel this is another one of those "both" deals.
4. Pressure always feels higher on Offense to me. Defensively....the game has changed. Your expected to give up more points, and score more points, in today's game.
5. Everyone wants to call a touchdown...haha.

One as a player, one as a coach.
As a player, Was playing for Jacksonville Texas in 2003 as a junior. We had a brutal pre-district schedule, new coach, and we went 0-5 to start the year. Palestine Texas had a RB named Adrian Peterson, was rolling into district 5-0....and had scored about 55 a game so far that year. Played them at home to start the district, and although Adrian had 177 yards.....we bottled them up for the most part and won 24-20. We went on to finish District Champs at 5-5 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Coaching I was at Palestine (go figure right) and we had #4 Athens at home. Athens was 3-1 with a loss to a state ranked team in a classification hire. We were 2-2. With the game tied at 20.....went on a 8 minute drive in the 4th quarter to win 28-20, and did not throw the ball. Inside zone out of the gun was called about 12 times.

Here is what we have done and I like it. We go to a part of the high school and watch a movie for home games. Usually a sports movie. During this time they can get on their phones all they want. We do this until 5:30. At 5:30 we head back to the locker room, and they put everything on, and carry their shoulder pads and helmets down to the little field house we have at the stadium. By this time it is 6:00 and all cell phones get left in the locker room. We have position meetings from 6-6:30 and at 6:30 pre game routines and all that begin.
Same thing for away games.....on the bus rides they have phones and a ton of freedom.....once we get there....no cell phones, meetings begin, and were on the field warming up quick.

Denton Guyer, current back to back state champs in 4a in Texas....posted a pic on twitter during springbreak....they had about 60kids show up everyday of spring break for workouts.
The more you put in the more you get out of it. You can lift weights, work hard, and still have time to be a kid.

Was coaching against a school here in Texas, on the rough side of a decent size city. They broke out of each group with hell yeah, and as pregame was going on you heard more profane language then you did anything else.
We lost 35-20, they were pretty dang good, and had a lot of football discipline.
I think they have been using that language since 3rd grade. Not sure cuss words should even be labeled so....offensive to a certain race or group of people is one thing.

We ended up 7-4 and out of the first round of the playoffs in Texas.
Down 3, 2 minutes left to go. We have the ball and are driving. A little confusion on what formation we are in and boom, out of nowhere the center snaps the ball. They recover, game over.
Was a brutal way to end the year.

Kind of at a "gangster" school. So we put "Buffet Life" on the front with a fork and knife to the sides, and on the back it says "Time to Eat".

I think with physicality it is a lot like "toughness". You can not just make a kid physical. What you can do is praise it, show examples of it, and explain why it is so important to be physical.
One thing that will help is making sure the kid is absolutely positive what he is suppose to do every play.

I am the O-line coach....and something that I have done the past 3 years is taken the O-line to Cici's pizza.
Basically we have some weekly goals that allow you to go to Cici's
100% attendance Winning Friday Allowing no sacks Giving up only 10 yards in Penalties 0 discipline issues in school
