Being a little old-school, all this being able to have you music on your cell phone has made it difficult on game day. You want them to have their individual music, but how do you keep them from texting and all that other stuff? Any ideas?

Be more specific. what are we talking about, in the locker room, on the bus, during the game?

Our track coach has a rule, no cell phones out on the bus ride to games. Simple as that. I'm not sure if I'd implement it, but I do like it.

At our school...for baseball...we take vans to games...which the coaches drive.
I found that the cellphone use by the guys in my van was atrocious. They'd be laughing and giggling about various posts on social media and receiving texts from people...laughing/joking, giggling.
I feel it had a direct impact on how some of them played individually. I'm not a doctor or scientist, but I believe there was a direct correlation to their performance because of the lack of focus they showed prior to the game.
I told them..."I used to sleep on the way to games to dream about the plays I was about to make".

Well, I would like them to be focused on the game. If they keep them, I really wouldnt want them texting or checking their phones at halftime.

I appreciate the need for individual music and it was easy when it was just Ipods and for us old farts walkmans, but, like one guy said theyer so into all the other things, how do you regulate it?

Does is REALLY impact if you win or lose?
Honestly I would not get too wrapped up with it. I doubt if your players listening to the cell phone before a contest is the reason you win OR lose. The reason is ability, talent, coaching.. etc.. Once that whistle blows on Friday Nights does anyone really care who had a cell phone or text at 6:45.
I have found in the past I use to get WAY to worked up with how were were before games and pre-game practices...etc..
Our kids listen to cell phones, text on bus rides and had them in the locker rooms before games. We still won 11 games went to the state semi-finals and finished the year ranked # 3 in state in our classification. I don not think they play a part at all.

1. Kids can't focus but so long. 2. I'd rather they play individual music--we're not having music blaring that disturbs others 3. I don't demand they be silent all afternoon---why not text? 4. Kids can't focus but so long.
Games at 7:30, schools out at 3:25, how long do you expect them to sit and focus?

We expect our guys to be quiet on the bus and in the locker room before games. Not silent but no hee-hawing and such. Phones? I used to care but I don't any more. As long as they're not a distraction, I have other things to worry about. If they're on the phone at halftime you have bigger problems to worry about.

I guarantee you that even if you take their phones, they're not going to be focusing on the game. In my day, ya it was dead silent on the bus, but we weren't "focusing" on the game. We just did it to avoid getting yelled at or having to run. What have you been doing all week that the kids need that hour on a bus to get prepared for the game?

I honestly never thought about it until I read OP.
On bus to away games I tell them they can listen to music as long as they're only ones that can hear it.
At home if they want to play music after Pre-Game meal and film until Specialties (5:45 pm for 7 pm kick off) I don't care. Kids that prefer quiet go into next locker room.
I doubt if we'll start patrolling lockeroom or back of bus to stamp out texting, though.
Times have changed and kids with them. Strikes me as a battle not worth fighting.

I don't think that cellphones and music are a problem at all. Different people get ready in different ways. If your kids know what they are doing and how to react and read their keys, I don't think texting an hour or two before the game will matter.
That being said giggling and laughing and being a distraction is a problem whether they have a cell phone or not.
Our kids can listen to music and even talk to each other before the game and on the bus. My rule is that they can do it, I just don't want to hear it. That way the kid can do what he wants, but not be a distraction to anyone.
Also, we get to the games at least 1.5 hours early, change and are on the field to warmup at least 45 minutes before the game. How much time do they need to get "ready"?

I liked this policy. Listen to your music. Talk quietly with the person you are sitting with. Do not talk across the aisle or up/down the rows. You should be talking about football or I shouldn't hear it. 10-15 minutes out we are silent. If you bring a device we can not ensure it will be secure while we are playing the game.

The bottom line is if you win or lose on Fridays.. Keep your eye on the ball.
I could never understand why a "bus ride" meant total silence. Why can't players talk? If we take a bus ride at 5:00 for a 7:00 game around town why is it for 15 minute or 20 minutes they HAVE TO BE SILENT? Now if it was a home game the players would be getting taped, locker area talking... Maybe on the field doing some pre-game warm up stuff or just in the gym relaxing or talking.. Why is it that the BUS RIDE we HAVE to have TOTAL silent? I mean we do not want them yucking it up or screaming and acting like idiots.. I get that.
Going back to cell phones.. Players are listening to music before a game in the locker area... Why NOT on the bus... This is not making sense.
If you are more worried about what your kids are listening too or are texting or are focused then maybe as a coach you need to get to the root of the problem.. Maybe it is you, your coaches or teams lack of leadership. I doubt it is the cell phone.
I doubt the cell phones before a game STOP you from WINNING! I KNOW THEY DO NOT!!
Athletes, ability, coaching... Not cell phones.
Keep your eye on the ball on this post.. Think many of you are swinging and missing... IMO

Never really thought too much of it until this post as well. I could care less about the texting, Facebook, music, etc. So long as it doesn't bother the kids who like it quiet. I give my kids a cheat sheet or all the extra copies of the scout report for that week. If they read them, great. If they'd rather text, whatever. My best players aren't usually the ones texting.

Just and added thought and it obviously takes time to sense this and get a feel for it, but every group has their own personality. I coached a group one time that if they were loose and even a little goofy before a game, that meant they were ready to go. If their were pretty quiet or silent before a game...that's when I worried!

They live in a world that has these things and it is as normal as when we used to put a chew in to get ready to play. Our coaches knew we did and said nothing, we were getting ready to play. Their normal is not our normal so let them be normal and put the phone down when they go to the field.

We've won when they were on their phone going to a game and we've lost.
Not something I care to police or worry about- within reason (music noise).
When 7:00pm rolls around- we go, I'm not as concerned about phone use at 4:30pm. Kids attention span is in the 5-7 minute range- they are not going to solely think about the game or assignments at 4:30. If they need to in order to execute at 7:00- we didn't coach them we'll enough throughout the week.

All that stuff about a quiet bus is bs.
Have kicked the living daylights out of teams and my guys weren't quiet. Then when we had lousy players and lousy coaching, we had the crap kicked out of us, and same thing, weren't quiet.
It doesn't make a difference. When the game is big, and I mean big, the team will reflect the coaches.

The entire "focus on what you are supposed to do" doesn't take hold with the kids if you ask me.

I wouldnt do that. It is highly illegal. There is a thread in the technology section about cell phone jammers.

We had a problem w/ one of the players (We used basic inductive reasoning to come to this conclusion, although I don't believe that anyone was ever caught) stealing cell phones one season. This made guys think twice before leaving them in their locker, which meant that they wouldn't bring them around the facilities. Outside of this, we never had a problem w/ them using them before practices/games.

We ask our guys to be quiet from the time they arrive at the field house. They don't have to be silent, but they understand that they are getting ready to go to work. We don't care about them listening to their own music or playing around on there phones. Heck on the bus trips I'm usually listening to my music and reading a book.

Look man, I still crank it up and sing along all the way to work every morning, singing and playing air drums all the way to work(about 4 minutes). I have been working for 30.46 years!! We all get ready a little differently, never understood making everyone do what the header thought was "getting ready to work".
Back when I played I slept as much pregame as I could, when I woke up I was a bear and ready to kick some ass! Just how I always did it.
I still think pregame walk throughs and mental rep and prep is bullship!! Get ready during the week and Friday should be fun time!!

We do walkthroughs at 530 for a home game just simply so I can make sure the kids are there. Before we started doing it we'd have skill kids show up at 600 when they were supposed to be on the field at 605. Plus, with kids coming from two other schools for our coop, it's nice to make sure you have everyone there since I don't see half of our team the entire day. I don't really consider it mental rep or anything, it's more or less so I can make sure we have all our specials and stuff filled. I agree with the rest of your post though.

I have always answered that anal thinking with this, what are you gonna do if someone isn't there? Next!

I have always answered that anal thinking with this, what are you gonna do if someone isn't there? Next! But, with only 45 kids 9-12, who that is sometimes is a game time thing. Especially on the specialties. Plus, 530 is the first time we expect kids to be around for a 7pm game. The guys I don't get are the ones that have kids come in at 3pm or earlier for a 7pm game.
