Been on a staff that went away for 3 days before we started summer camp. WAS GREAT, The HC went over every aspect of how he wanted program to be run. Everyone on same page, all questions answered. I highly suggested it if your a HC.

I agree that you always need to look how you can improve, but that can come as simple as 1 drill added that fits into your scheme that may improve something like a kids first step.

I like using point method for younger kids when it comes to the mesh. Can Triple be done at younger levels??? Just as much as trying to sling it around, or basing out of the shotgun.

Us as a HS staff are starting to meet w/ the youth coaches once a month and we're going to be putting on a coaches clinic for the first time this year. We have had some success in the past of getting the youth coaches to follow our lead but most of them don't like the triple option because it's "boring" and they all want to run the spread. Needless to say, our youth coaches aren't like the youth coaches on this site, as they're all dads and think they know enough anyway. We're going to the Glazier clinic in Greenwich CT in March, and I can tell you, I know of at least 3-4 youth coaches that won't give a damn about trying to better themselves. It's tough to work with. LOL.....I always want to ask the coaches that say stupid crap like that for them to define "spread" what does it mean? what plays? blocking scheme? I have herd many different things when I hear spread so I always laugh when I hear someone in the community say something stupid like that.

Here is my issue with your thought process. All of the highlighted text represents the HS program. Why is there this default mindset that the HS PROGRAM is what matters? Whether the 11/12 coach "feeds" that system or not is not the key element. If the 11/12 coach is PART of that program, things are a bit different, but it is almost universal in these threads on Huey that HS coaches come across as if HS FOOTBALL is what matters when stats show that most youth football players DO NOT play HS football. Several times when this comes up, people have brought up the "what if we just pushed 'what matters' to the Next Level" meaning, what if the mindset was that the college ranks are what matters. A very solid argument can be made that once past HS kids HS success is virtually meaningless, and in many cases individuals trying to hold onto that success are mocked (kids wearing HS letter jackets post graduation, kids wearing championship rings post graduation etc). Absolutely NOT the case for the collegiate level, as nobody would mock anyone wearing Conference or Bowl Ring as an Adult (with the possible exception of those working in the NFL environment) From reading the posts on this thread I am starting to think that maybe the guys who are more in favor of vertical alignment are from smaller school districts. The stats that 19delta posted about attrition rates I would think are skewed due to urban youth football leagues as he alluded to. For example, you might have 10 youth teams in an urban setting consisting of kids that will attend 3 different high schools. Each of these teams has 15 kids. That's 150 kids for 3 schools meaning 50 kids in each grade, in each school. Even the biggest schools have 30 kids MAX per class out for football. Now, at our school we have about 80 kids per class in the school. Our youth teams get around 10-15 kids per class for 5th/6th. Almost every one of those kids will play all the way through (I would say 90%). It makes more sense for us to VA than for the urban teams. That said, I don't expect our 5th/6th team to do any of our stuff. If the coaches came up and said "Hey we'd like to run some of your stuff" then I would definitely sit them down and coach em up, but I don't expect that. 7th and 8th I would like them to start incorporating something that we are doing at the HS level because yes, in our small town the HS Varsity program IS WHAT MATTERS. I think your correct on vertical alignment for smaller schools. IMO it is a lot different than larger schools, cause naturally you will have a larger selection to choose from, and on average have a lot more athletic type kids to mold into your system. Athletes determine your success for the most part, and if you do not have them then you have to find somewhere else to try and take advantage. This is were I can see vertical alignment come into play some. May not have a very good athlete but may have a Very good "specialist" type kid cause he has been doing it for 4 -5 years before he even has to play varsity.

I think we are no different than players. After a while we become counter productive if we do something for so long without stop.

if we are describing success as wins and losses then .... Players- (NO program has success without athletes) Coaches Staff- one person can't do it by himself, our job is to make the bad player into ok, ok to good, good to great, great to elite. Community support- can range from a wide variety of things.

Don't forget the most important part...be very successful running it, and then mention to all the parents "Hmm..when Johnny was a wing back he did great things for me...its a shame that he doesn't get to play that anymore" Whats a shame is that some coaches out there really say this type stuff even when the HC hasn't even spoke to the youth coaches. At this point you become no different than the A$$hole coach that comes in and tries to tell everyone what to do.

Love it. Just to play devils advocate here. What about if you didn't hire the staff, do you give over full duties to the assistants. Maybe others have been in this situation before, low numbers and a staff that I didn't hire, how did it go giving up calling duties to someone you didn't bring in on your first year?

Do your best to sell the program, like Brophy said, try and find as many ways to get different players on the field. If your struggling that bad, I hate to say it but only sure way to raise interest level is to WIN. Everybody wants to be associated with a winner.

I like giving them and coaches 30 min after school. I have taught a last class before, and getting everything ready, changing, using the rest room and just getting my mind settled sometimes took all the time I could take. Think the same goes for the kids. I don't think I could have done everything in 15, and not been organized and prepared the way I would like to be. Plus it barley gives kids time to use the rest room and get ready.

Or just false start...by rule there is supposed to be a 10 second run off. So that should be a quick 10 secs you can burn.

Sure, taking the kids to a trainer is that not us taking care of their kids? It's also about showing HOW the game has changed where we're protecting players via penalties, new methods of tackling, and line play (no longer the 3 points of contact). Although meshparker thinks the game is fine, doesn't need changing and coaches who want to improve the safety of it are just metrosexual pansies. I agree on new method of tackling and blocking. As far as penalties its hard to give them an answer, cause I don't think they know what they are wanting to call.....I have seen targeting calls when a guy turns his head and hits with his shoulder and hits other guys shoulder but it was a devastating hit, and gets called for a penalty. I can't speak for mesh, but I think the game needs to be tweaked and changed some, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, we played/coach a violent game. We know that, and as we get older it gets more physical and more violent. There is only so much you can do to make a sport like this as safe as possible. Think what kind of sport boxing and mma would be if they didn't allow head shot, and could only hit shoulders and below...Some safety rules is BS, not being able to hit a QB except in the stomach is a business decision more than safety. But those who put the rules in say its 100% cause of safety.

With parents you talk about their child's safety is most important. You tell them that their child will be fitted with the best equipment the school can provide. You tell them you are going to take care of their child like they are your own...You don't point fingers and tell them that this or that is to blame. I tell them just like anything football is a risk sport, that I can't say their child will be injury free, but I will care for them the best I can.

When did this turn into a pissing contest?? It has been all over the media about the attack on football and the Dr from the movie concussion trying to get rid of football till a child is 18 (which will basically take away football). Why is football the the main sport getting attacked here in America? IMO its two things. 1. The Dr has a personal vendetta against the NFL. 2. Football is king here in the states when it comes to popularity and most important...money. I agree that this has little to do with a child's safety, but they know when they use that, no one can counter attack them using that as the base. Just like meshparker said, once you get football, the rest you wont have to fight. I'm all for child safety, but I also know that I can't keep my kids in a bubble all their life. They are going to get injured. I hope they drive a car one day, even though I know there is a chance that they may be in an accident. I drive my kids in a car now, knowing that there is a chance that we may be in an accident. I know they may be injured riding a bike or skateboard or cross country running or whatever they do besides sit on a couch in their bubble, and I'm ok with that and so are they... Liberal media is killing our country. Life is a risk, there isn't someone always to blame for everything bad that happens, sometimes you have to accept that, but the media wants to always point a blame somewhere. According to this Dr, we shouldn't do anything that has a risk...Sometimes I wonder when did common sense leave our country.

Ok, IF He shanks it You manage to fair catch it You have a great kicker You have a heck of a wind at your back THEN Maybe you have a chance for the free kick. and even from the your 40 that's still a heck of a kick to get it over the uprights. Not saying it can't be done, but the chances of a successful free kick off a safety kick is about like winning the lottery.

I'm going to guess that most every team when it comes to passing concepts are option routes. Lets face it, there is not much difference in team to team what is being done. Most teams mainly have a zone blocking and a power blocking scheme. But with Free agency and players getting trade away or playing for different teams more than some people change underwear there can't be that much difference......coaches changing around for that matter as well.... I'm not positive, but I don't believe that's true to the extent that the Patriots do it. I doubt they are unique, but what they do - or perhaps how they do it - isn't common, either. They have really struggled to find receivers who can play in their system, and have had plenty come through who were fine in other systems but failed abysmally here. And a similar list of guys who thrive in their system but don't do as well in others. It got a lot of play and discussion around here when they had Chad Johnson and he couldn't get on the field. Don't think CJ had to do with learning the scheme more than he was ready to retire and move on, and the way the Pats do things is not the way the lazy player likes to be.

watch the pats. They are not 25 different concepts. Not even close. In a sense maybe they are. They probably have the most flexible offense in the NFL - part of the difficulty in playing them is that they morph what they do every week based on the team they're playing. They are the ultimate take what they are given team. That said - perhaps different "concepts" isn't the right way to put it. Most of their passing routes are option routes, so both Brady and the receiver have to make the same read, sometimes multiple reads, on the play. That doesn't change game to game, but what the receiver and Brady are looking for does. Very complicated to run, and a big reason they tend to have trouble finding receivers who fit their system.

Agree watch whole game first. See how they line up to certain formations if it's simular to yours. I really try to find their weak link. Most every HS football team has 2-3 kids that are weaker. Find those kids and see how you can exspose them.

Coach, the point of my idea is to make it the Netflix of football. Plus the money goes towards buying flim, dvds, and getting the best coaches to post something. I don't have that money, I don't run the best football website out there Efootballflix.com agree think this website already does it....i'm not a member, but think someone beat you to the punch.....like BLB said, have a hard time paying for stuff with so much at disposal for free.
