For the time constraints, use Google Meets. We have done this as an entire staff, it just makes things so much easier. We have them around 7 or 8 during the evenings. That gives guys time to eat dinner with their family... Whatever else they may need to do. We have done one every week or two. First night we talked about philosophy/ base. Second week we went over tackling/ responsibilities during spring practices. Next I plan on sitting down with each position group (on different nights) and going over their position manuals. It's been a total game changer. I agree with this! Use Google Meet/Zoom. Talked about scheduling is more crowded than his, but you can always meet at night. We have meet as late as 10pm before after we have put kids to bed. If you know how to use the whiteboard feature you can essentially do everything you want that you could do sitting in an office. With technology the way it is today there is no real reason that you MUST meet in an office anymore, unless it's just personal preference, and that includes during the season as well.

C'mon men. When you get right down to brass tacks there is only ONE common denominator that has created this entire F'ing mess. GREED! For the love of Mike it has come down to just that! Used to be it was about the team, the team, the team. Not anymore. Our sport is hemorrhaging because the word "WE" has been replaced by too much I, ME, MINE. The networks and their lure of money have contributed greatly to this whole picture because of THEIR OWN greed! Entertainment = GREED. Super Conferences = GREED. Playoffs = GREED. Transfer Portal = GREED. NIL = GREED. Coaches in today's world are dealing with a complete different kind of animal, and older coaches like Saban aren't willing to put up with it and are getting out because of it. I would venture to guess that guys like PJ would be included in that group. Longevity in being a college head football coach has always been tough, but now...likely aren't going to see many (if any) of those guys anymore. I think you can add Coaching Greed into it as well, and how much a Coach is willing to sell his soul for money or wins beside his name. With the "your only as good of a coach as your record" mindset from society and some of our peers, Coaches are willing to do Whatever It Takes to try and get the win column much higher than the losing collum. It's only a different type of animal now cause people don't have to hide anymore about paying players.

No people won't quit watching..what some of us are saying is that the game/league will be changing. It won't be college football per sey, maybe a type of minor league. People will still watch, just will be called something different. The "Rich Guys" will figure out they are the ones in charge now, and can make up their own rules, and will become minor league owners maybe. When or if schools stop being on the names of the jerseys, many casual fans will be gone. I imagine enough to affect the numbers in a meaningful way. My wife watches most Purdue basketball and football games because she is an alum. If teams are no longer associated with schools, those views will dwindle. I think that saves college football. I agree the rich guys will figure it out. There's too much money for it to die. It's like the two party system. It sucks but it will protect itself. No, there still will be college teams, but there is a possibility that it will be more of the FCS calliaber players at the Purdue's. While the top tier players go straight into minors (just like baseball is now type). I don't think college football will die, just what we think of when we think college football will change.

Theres a hundred thousand people sitting in multiple stadiums each weekend watching games you're telling me they will all suddenly stop watching because their team a) gets more better players going to the nfl and b) plays more games against better teams (no more vandy, no more East North West State FCS)? I find that hard to believe I think most of this talk is older dudes who don't like it, the old "get off my lawn" approach for every old guy who says "they do get paid, they get a scholarship" there's young fans saying "why is 'bama playing delaware state in week 9?" and there's always going to be rich guys willing to pay to make sure their team is hte best salary cap and free agency didn't kill the NFL, it probably made it better... lot of old dudes thought it was gonna die though when those ideas were floated. No people won't quit watching..what some of us are saying is that the game/league will be changing. It won't be college football per sey, maybe a type of minor league. People will still watch, just will be called something different. I do not blame college players from taking NIL deals and that never really bothers me. A lot of this could have been prevented though if tv money contracts and coaches contracts didn't get as high that they are now so that is really who should be blamed IMO. The moving around of players from one to another though really throws me off though. I understand I can be a little blurry visioned since I coach in an area of small schools where families move back at a high rate and is kind of expected to have kids and bring them through the public schools sports programs. This to me though is what pure sport is about though is the bonding of teammates to better one another to achieve a goal you had as a kid together and really why it attracted a lot of fans to begin with. When you take all of that away people start to lose the interest that drove them to the sport. Alright I will stop with my old man rant as a 31 year old and realize I am probably way out of touch with the rest of the way people see it. I don't blame players taking NIL deals either. My problem was when major college players were screaming that they were broke to the point where they could not even get a pizza at night and was starving cause they couldn't get jobs.... I literally laughed out loud when they would cry about this.

I think what is major college football will be a minor league football in 5-10 years. What is just below major college football and the FCS will be our college football governed by the NCAA. I think major universities know they no longer have to worry about the NCAA thinks, and will be in the process of making this change within the next 5-10.

The scenario you are looking for is that they stop the Chiefs and then score. Mahomes as good as he is, isn't going to score every time. The Chiefs didn't score a touchdown at all in the first half and lost 6 games during the season. Mahomes is good, but he's not unstoppable. I agree. But it seems that most people are saying it is a mistake to take the ball first because Mahomes is going to do whatever it takes. But if you play that logic out, that means that the 49ers will HAVE to score a TD and HAVE to go for 2 and get it no matter if they get the ball first and second. That is a tall order. Possessions are the most important thing. If I can get 1 or more possessions than my opponents , then I increase my chance to win and if in sudden death overtime (after both teams get a possession), it should greatly increase my chance. But for some reason, it seems that most everyone on this thread thinks that you should go second. Trying to wrap my brain around how Mahomes is unstoppable and let's possibly give him more possessions helps you win. It just sounds like 20/20 hindsight. If 49ers would have elected to give the Chiefs the ball first and the Chiefs score and then 49ers go down and score, and then Chiefs kick a FG to win, this thread would be so different.
Who can honestly say that before last Sunday night, that they would defend the 49ers decision to give Mahomes an extra freaking possession!!!BE HONEST!!Look at it in this perspective. What's better chances of positive outcome. Let PM know what he must do to win (which he has a track record of in these situations) OR say We supposedly have the best offense in NFL. In an overtime situation let them know what they must do, and if it comes down to a 2pt conversion, or giving the ball back to PM. Is my chances better seeing if my offense can gain 2 yds or give ball back to him knowing what he has to do. My perspective is based on players. This guy obviously is special. Do you allow Jordan to take the last shot to win the championship? or do you make him shoot first and put the ball in your hands for a championship?

No, my point is I'm the one that's going to decide at the very end with My Offense if I'm 49ers...all I herd (don't really care for NFL so don't watch it much) was how good the 49er offense was...so they should be on the field for me to decide the game. Even if PM scores a TD, I know that I still get to decide last with my best team out there.

Let me ask a question for everyone especially those who say that Mahomes is ALWAYS going to what it takes to win. (By the way, I am not arguing that he won't. Ha). Describe a scenario where the 49ers get the ball second and win? The only one I can come up with is the Chiefs score and kick an xpt and then the 49ers score and go for 2 and get it. The scenario you are looking for is that they stop the Chiefs and then score. Mahomes as good as he is, isn't going to score every time. The Chiefs didn't score a touchdown at all in the first half and lost 6 games during the season. Mahomes is good, but he's not unstoppable. Correct, BUT he did and Has scored when they Must in the playoffs except for one time vs Bengals. His other losses are against the Goat, so they are acceptable lol.

Which would not be a bad choice. Do you give it back to him not knowing the possibility, or do you say, our best chance is to go for 3 yards with what some think are better players (49 offense was most of the talk) for a chance at a championship? Bottom line is I get the final choice as to how this game is decided with the best part of my team able to decide it.

Reason #4: you let the best DL for KC go unblocked while faking a sweep play opposite of him with the game on the line.

Let me try and articulate this one more time. It is not like taking the ball first LOST the 49ers the game. IF, they kicked first, we should still assume that the Chiefs score at TD. No reason at all not to since they did. There was never a time during that drive that they had to face a "kick the fg or go for it decision". And they certainly were going to go for it on that one 4th down play no matter when that situation happened during the game. So if they kicked first, that means that the 49ers now have one more play to score a TD. That means they have to score on that play. Certainly that is way better than what happened. But, it also means they then have to either convert a 2 point conversion or stop Mahomes from just getting a FG. Since they kicked the FG the first time, going for 2 there seems unlikely. The odds are, at best, 25% that they score on that play and then convert a 2 point conversion. I truly believe (and said it at the time before the kick), that a surprise onside kick after the FG was the way to win that game. Even if you don't get it, Mahomes still has to score a TD after they recover the kick. And everyone feels that was inevitable anyways. And don't quote onside kick stats at me. Those do not apply to an onside kick. I agree, taking the ball did not get them beat. Allowing one of, if not the best players in the game right now a chance to know what he had to do to win it didn't help their cause lol....oh and not having anyone on Mahomes on a 4th and 1 situation with the championship on the line didn't help either lol.

In all my years we haven’t been in many OT games; we’ve been in 4 total and are 3-1. One reason we haven’t been in many OT games is that we will go for the win (TD > FG or 2 >1) almost all the time, so that line of thinking influences my response. In H.S. and college, I don’t think many would argue to have the ball first. When we’ve had the ball first and scored we have always gone for 2. If we have the ball second, regardless of what they did we go for two (unless a kick will win it AND we have a kicker… that happened once and we missed the kick to win and lost in the 2nd OT). Given all that, I can see an argument for taking the ball first in the NFL, but (personal opinion here) I would do everything slightly beyond reasonable to get 8 points out of the deal. As far as the 49ers decision, I don’t have a problem with them taking the ball first, and I don’t have a problem with kicking the FG (4th & 4 was it?). My thinking is go for it, but I understand their reasoning. KC has scored one TD all game. The potential for an extra possession carries some weight here. And (for the record) I didn’t have a problem with Seattle throwing on the goal line vs. NE. (I did not like the play/formation; didn’t stress the LB enough to me… but I’m not a big “tight bunch passing guy” either, so I’ll take it they knew what they wanted…Butler just made a great play). They had to burn a TO on the long reception, leaving them with one left. If you run and get stopped- now you “have to” throw (or take your chances on one play). If you throw and it is incomplete, you have more options on the next down.
Unfortunately, if you throw an interception, people will bring that up for the next 50 years whenever there is a controversial decision made in a super bowl. Unless someone takes the ball first and kicks a field goal… then you might get replaced.
All I know is I am one hell of a lot better coach from the stands or from my living room than I am on the sideline. Na this ain't no where close to to that bad LOL...That will go down in infamy as the worst. They had plenty of time to give it ML twice to try and get 1 yard, who was the best offensive player in the game that season. They will have to just eat that one. Thats where their coaches thought plays instead of players, and their analytics costed them a SB and gave Brady another.

Watching some videos Chiefs were shocked they took ball and some 49ers thought if they scored a TD it would be over..cqmiller, when doing your statistics you also have to throw in the increase % of the best player making the necessary drives when they have to in those situations. The normal statistics include the top and the bottom of their perspective tears, which sway the overall numbers, plus you have to throw in situation moments that are bigger than just a regular season game. PM scored on his last 2-3 drives, what is his probability to make a TD drive when he knows that's what he has to do to win. He hasn't been in many situations like that, but if your a Bills fan you think it's close to 100% lol sorry if anyone is a Bills fan.

Do I approve? HECK NO. BUT Andy obviously didn't have a problem with it. In HS we are the captains of the ship, in college (changing in power 5 conferences as we speak) you are still the captains. In Pro sports, coaches are Not the captains, they are the advisors to the captains. Andy knows this and thats why some coaches make better pro coaches and others do not, and some pro coaches would struggle at lower levels as well.

NFL DC not using triple option principles to stop zone read. End and LB both chased Exactly, even when the whole world knew that Mahomes was going to end up with the ball. That is my point. At some point, you think players, not plays. The Chiefs certainly did. And there was a TIMEOUT!!!! No idea what Shanahan's role with the defense is, but as a head coach, during a timeout, it is your responsibility to go to that huddle and say stop MAHOMES!!! This RIGHT HERE...how do you Not have eyes on him, and tell your guys look...this is for all the chips...he is keeping the ball unless we make him throw.

Yes, but you on that second possession have several advantages. Isn't the ONLY advantage that if the first team scores a TD, that you know you have to score a TD? Or if they kick a FG, then you have to at least kick a FG? So the advantage is that you know what you have to do to match. And all that does is give the ball to the other team to win in sudden death. Now knowledge is an advantage, but not an overwhelming advantage when all that advantage does is to know what you have to match. It isn't like hs or college. Matching is fine there. Matching is not fine in the NFL. Meaning, if everything is the same, but the 49ers kick first, the the only advantage they would have is to know that they had to go for it on 4th instead of kicking. Now that is an advantage. Not arguing it is not. But if they don't score there, they lose. And if they do score there, Mahomes gets the ball and only has to kick a FG to win. Of course that is better than what happened last night. But that is 20/20 hindsight at it's finest. Also if you hold them then you know a FG wins it. KC took advantage of going second, knowing they were in 4 down territory their whole drive which helps call plays. 49ers Gave up pts on their last two possessions, and 49ers might have scored on 2 of 3 on their last (not 100 sure). This is also where I want to know what I need to do. I don't want the best player in NFL knowing what he has to do.

OT for last night: Both got a possession. So it is like a HS rule type (not exactly). It was not sudden death or even the if first possession is a TD then game is over. Again I thought it was absolutely crazy not going on defense first.

Watching the SB last night, and 49ers winning the coin toss choosing to go on Offense first giving the Chiefs last say in the game. What are your preferences in an OT situation? I was FN shocked personally that 49ers took ball, but talking to other coaches, they are not so much. I ALWAYS GO DEFENSE FIRST IN THE SITUATION NO MATTER WHAT!!! I want to know what I must do and put the ball in my hands to determine the outcome of the game. I sure as Heck don't let one of the best in the league get to decide. Again just wondering what other's thoughts are?

All of the above. But I've said it on this site (different thread?) that the guys who win with less talent, as opposed to the guys with great talent who win, are the coaches I have admired most in this profession. A number of them are the very guys who post on this site. I have come to the conclusion that I know more coaches who are Great coaches IMO that have a losing coaching records than I know Great coaches that have winning records and state titles.

Superior Talent > Superior Coaching if the Gap of talent is too big. As far as what I look for? Defensive alignment and are kids in position to make the play. Offensively- blocking scheme- is everyone being blocked at point of attack, or accounted for (read). Sometimes you see these successful teams and they are not blocking someone on the perimeter on a outside play, but they go for a 60 yard TD cause their RB or whoever breaks a tackle or just outruns the force player to the edge and goes down the sideline. Other things to look for- unforced penalties (offsides, false starts, ect) The job of the coach is to increase your talent 1 standard deviation, great coaches can sometimes increase 2. But your not winning the Kentucky Derby riding a Jacka$$, I don't care who trains him or the jockey is...so there is always limitations on win/loss category.

I think the transition is slowly going to players wanting something more than success, or “fun”. They want “things” …College players have done made it Very Clear, they are playing to get paid!, not to play football. Football is just their means of getting “things” that they want. HS players want to get paid just for them appear on a college campus…Most of high school programs don’t have to deal with this head on, but some do, and players hear stories about what top HS players get. You can make up any excuse you want so things don’t sound like they are that greedy, but it’s the sad truth. That’s why I suggested getting players gear for playing. And not just shorts/tees, sweats…. Might have to get them backpacks, jackets, personalized anything with “brand” on them.

I have coached 2 D1 kids in my 21 years, and a BUNCH that would not even start for 60zgo's Freshman teams as a Sr it sounds like lol. Have coached plenty of kids (skill kids) that could not catch a cold standing in the middle of Antarctica. There is this little class A school about twenty minutes away. Maybe 150 kids in the whole school. 20-25 kids in football. Every single year they have a DI. Every few years they have a SEC kid and they have had two kids play in the NFL. It's pretty wild. Our league champion this year had a LSU signee and we didn't think he was the best player on their team.... South Louisiana/Southern Mississippi is talent bonkers. But systems make a difference too. So if I'm the HFC and I'm in charge of the Middle School AND I'm in charge of 6-12 PE I've got a huge advantage as far as teaching skills. I'm not blind to how lucky we are. Yeah definitely lucky with talent pool. Then again with that much talent walking around I'm sure you have problems that you have to deal with that guys like me don't have to.

I have only coached in Texas and Louisiana. I guess our DNA is just better. We have had a bunch of DI kids over the years and we see DI kids every week. I am lucky enough that I have always been at places where the kids could be taught to catch and throw and run. There may be something to that. We don't have Spring Football up here like you do. The PE programs including at K-8 have been drastically reduced over the years. Ice Hockey is big and Lacrosse is growing fast. So even if they play Football too they spend a lot of time playing sports that don't involve throwing or catching a ball of any kind. Also similar to larrymoe I never had a D-I player and faced only a handful in my 31 years as a HC. I have coached 2 D1 kids in my 21 years, and a BUNCH that would not even start for 60zgo's Freshman teams as a Sr it sounds like lol. Have coached plenty of kids (skill kids) that could not catch a cold standing in the middle of Antarctica.

Winning solves everything! As I mentioned before, “Winning” does not solve everything. It should, but it does not. Out of our current sophomores (which is our most athletic class in the building by far) we have 6 of the 11 best athletes out for football. All of them played in junior high and EVERY YEAR when these kids were in junior high, they all traveled across the state to watch us play in the state championship game. Nearly half of them do not play now because they are going to the NBA or NHL or MLB… or because there are expectations in our program (much the same as the rest of you have), whatever the excuse may be. Our current 8th grade is a similar class to our sophomores- but if we don’t get most of them out, there is a chance that football dies here. A school/town very similar to ours (just on the other side of the river) no longer plays football. They co-op with a “neighboring town” (55 miles away). Another one, slightly larger than us, did not play for two years. They are slowly on the path back to recovery… but it’s like watching SMU after the death penalty. Here is the breakdown for next year re: returning players: (Next year’s) Seniors – 5 players. 3 who started the season ineligible. 3 of them were 2 way starters, the other two got a lot better and may help in 2024. Juniors (the sophomore class referenced above) 6 players. All starters (really 5 and an emergency defensive starter by week 3… undersized and slow DB).
Freshmen – 3 players One starter, one who played some, one just on KOR. Every one of the above was on a special team somewhere.
We played one 9-man JV jamboree. We had all our freshmen, two foreign exchange students, the two junior non-starters and two seniors who were in their first year of playing football (one of them started the last game when it came down to him or our Italian student). If my math is right, that’s 14 players. We are not 6man, 8 man or 9 man. We are 11 man. As we all know, there are down classes… we’ve just never had this many jammed together and have never had so few multi-sport athletes. The above is my reason for starting this thread in the first place. I appreciate the suggestions like 60zgo to run a spread single wing… but after 18 years in this offense we’ve done it all (2 SE balanced, 1 TE balanced/unbalanced, 2 TE unbalanced…). I’ve been a SW kool-aid drinker for a long time and have used many variations. In 2012 we averaged around 200 yds. a game passing. In 2022 we didn’t attempt a pass for 3 weeks in a row during October. Both those years we made the semi-finals. You do what best fits your personnel within your system; that is one of my core philosophies. I like the “Single Wing” (which is a pretty generic term anyway… like “spread”) BECAUSE it is so adaptable (more so than our Wishbone was… no offense to that offense because I still love that as well). As far as the original question- I only posed this question to see the angles I wasn’t seeing/looking for. Being on here is like being at the social at the clinic (minus the beer and wings)- most of my “thoughts” I would only share with coaches. You are the only ones who “know”. There are many on here whose thoughts and commentary I truly appreciate/value. I don’t always agree… but sometimes I need to hear the contrary to my position. It makes me a better coach. When all is said and done, I really don’t think I was asking the right question… but it is one that crossed my mind more than once after the worst season we’ve had in over 20 years.
Yeah I agree with you there then. Sorry for your troubles in your situatiation. To be honest though your troubles have Nothing to do with your scheme, your trouble lies MUCH MUCH DEEPER, and changing a scheme offensively or defensively is not going to fix your problem IMO. I hate to say it but you may need to look deeper into what you can provide the kids with more. Maybe the best "swag gear" you can get with clothes, backpacks, anything you can think of. This sometimes is a lot tougher depending on financial situations. Kids LOVE gear, so that maybe something to increase interest in participation. If they knew they were getting a new backpack, sweats, shorts, tops, jackets and all that, they maybe more likely to come out. Wish you the best, and keep us updated on how things turn out.

Winning solves everything! I am currently at a school that has been predominantly spread with very few winning seasons. Couple of years ago we had a good group of Srs that were spread the previous years but struggles to win games. We had a huge QB with a rocket for an arm, but we just couldn't seem to get things going, threw tons of INTS and struggled up front pass blocking up front in the years. Their SR year we went to more SBV, we won the most games in school history, hosted the first playoff game in school history, won first playoff game in school history. You have to evaluate your situation. Our school does not have the dynamic to win championships year in and year out. The best athletes in school play basketball and baseball, they are not interested in playing football cause nobody in their family grew up playing football (first Varsity season in school history was 2015) and parents are scared of baby getting hurt. We have success in those sports at times, but are not world beaters there either. A very successful coach said that there are 3 ways you can be successful. 1-Be better than everyone else. 2- Be different than everyone else. 3- Be both 1 & 2... I've been at 8 different schools in my 21 years of coaching. (lived the coaches life lol) I've plays for state championships and have been 0-10. Been evolved with SBV,Flexbone, Pro I, Spread, Wing-t, SW...had success with all, and not so much with all. Schemes do not equal success!!! You do what you know the best and can coach the best. That will give your kids the best chance to be successful. I think Coaches have fallen into the same trap that our society has fallen into on other issues. I'm not saying what's right and wrong, but just cause society tells me this is better doesn't always mean its better. BUT we go along with it cause we know it makes life easier.
