Do any of you have any experience with doing some sort of a retreat with your coaching staff? What have been the positives and negatives of this? Are they certain things that make this a more beneficial experience?

Are they certain things that make this a more beneficial experience? Yes. I was on a staff that did this. Very positive and honestly can't think of a negative. It was a 3 day weekend at a resort/conference center. We had a very large staff of 20+ including the Jr High staff. The AM was reserved for meetings. HC would go over philosophy, operations manual, etc. Position assistants had to give a 30 minute clinic to the entire staff about their position. We broke at noon each day and had the afternoons to ourselves (golf guys went golf, drunk guys drank, guys who wore visors would play sand volleyball). We had a nightly dinner and social around 8pm.

I take 3 months off to get a break from football. After that...I don't retreat, I attack.

Been on a staff that went away for 3 days before we started summer camp. WAS GREAT, The HC went over every aspect of how he wanted program to be run. Everyone on same page, all questions answered. I highly suggested it if your a HC.

Most weekends in the summer, most of our staff takes one of our boats out on the lake and we drunk too much. And then we go back to our HC's house, drink some more and shoot some guns.
Is this what you're talking about?

I don't like retreats. Let's just meet at the school and do what needs to be done, and I will do what I want to do afterwards and sleep in my own bed.

We'll take a night and do a quick retreat where the HC will go over everything: weekly schedule, philosophy, equipment, etc. Each coordinator will present the basics along with any additions, changes, points of emphasis, etc. Then, our special teams coach (or individual coaches if they are broken up among the staff) will present.
It's a laid back environment. Beer is drank. Jokes are told. And, being away is good so we can focus on the program. Our HC is very good about putting out different options for dates/ locations early and giving the assistants a chance to voice opinions about when/ where. Very good IMO.

Every spring, we take a long weekend and go somewhere. Visit with a college staff, watch them practice some, plan our 'hell week/breakfast of champions, plan our slogan/focus for the summer into season, split O/D plan go over install. Last year we went to UGa. This year we're going to Houston.

We started doing a retreat in 2011 prior to that I would take our staff to a clinic each year. I was noticing at the clinic some of our guys would do a great job of getting to a couple sessions and other guys would not get much out of it outside the social aspects. As time went on we did more and more of our meetings at these clinics and I felt it was a waste of expense to pay for the clinic for everyone when the majority of the staff was getting more out of our meetings. So in 11' in the winter we went to one of the coaches cabins, we arrive Thursday night and cover summer/fall schedule and any offer any changes input that folks have as far as structure and events. Friday we start meeting schemes we spend 5-6 hours cover offense followed by 5-6 hours covering defense with breaks scheduled in for food. Finally on Saturday we spend 2-3 hours on special teams and head home. If guys want to go to clinics we set that up on a individual basis and we try to set up a couple visits each year to pick the brains of HS or college staffs that we have a lot of respect for.

We would always go somewhere near the lake or get a houseboat (HC had connections out the wazoo).
We would always take a day or so to go over what the season and what he expected out of us as coaches. The biggest thing that I enjoyed was just being able to get together to listen to his stories or the DC's stories talking about coaches like Bear Bryant who he coached against or other funny stories that we would never even imagine could happen.
It was just a great time to get out of our town and just relax before the upcoming season. Not to mention that cliff jumping into the lake and watching one of the coaches pee his pants before giving into peer pressure might be the funniest thing ever...

Im married to my wife, not my coaching staff. I honestly think they might enjoy a retreat without me, but I really don't feel the need to lock myself away with a bunch of dudes.
Id rather spend a few days with my own kids too.
