Elementary FB (5-6 grades) - everyone plays almost equal time 7th-8th grades - everyone plays but not equal amounts of time Junior Varsity - everyone plays but some will play very little (5-10 snaps) Varsity - best play I believe everyone needs a chance at the lower levels. We always have a kid that will play for us his senior year that was terrible in the previous. Just never know when a kid will "catch on" or mature physically. This Let me use my basketball career as an example. I started YMCA ball in 3rd grade... I was bad. Big Time. However I still got to play 2 full quarters a game. This happened all the way through 5th grade. 6th grade I was on a travel team with my friends. I played a little more but not much. 7th grade out of a 10 game schedule, I only played in 3 games. 8th grade I became the 6th man and saw alot of run. Freshman basketball I was a starter, but in JV I barley saw the floor. My junior year when I got to varsity I NEVER saw the floor. EVER. Ok maybe 5 games all year (24-2 team that went to state final four), and then didnt play senior year. My point is, I kind of followed the path above and have no regrets about it. I dont feel cheated. My parents always encouraged me to get better, but I along with them were realistic about what I could do as a basketball player. (SIDEBAR: My parents NEVER complained about my playing time to me or a coach,EVER. They were realistic about what I could and could not do.) The younger the level, the more equal the PT. By 7th-8th grade, the kids have started to seperate out and the better should get most of the game time. A kid that age doesnt understand that anymore..I grew up in an era when indeed it was understood and no one I ever played with complained about it. Now it seems everyone wants to be a starter, or has to be the "man." After practice one day I took an informal survey, having everyone close their eyes, I asked this... Would you rather go undefeated and be a role player..."play a little, but contribute" or we lose every game but your a starter"....all but 5 kids picked the last one. Suprise, my 5 best players/athletes picked the first one. Weird.

I got lucky. I had two teachers run study hall for me every week. I hooked both of them up with a sweatshirt as a thank you, as well as helping out with some classroom discipline. I am lucky to have a great and supportive staff were I work and they always seem willing to help out with whatever.

Here is what I 've seen done.
Starting the second week of school, study hall is mandatory for EVERYONE for the next two weeks. Games start around week 4... so do weekly grade checks..if you have a D or F, you report to study hall from 3:30-4:00. Practice starts at 4, so they run a few reminders about getting it done in the classroom.

I hijacked it into a fan thread....
The problem with Mizzou's version of the spread is it seems to struggle in the run game. IZ/OZ havent been as successful. Granted when they had burners like Maclin and a great TE like Coffman it opened things up.
We all know you make the inexperinced kid beat you. Any sort of pressure and Gabbert has struggled.
I think in the next 5 years we will see the game re-evolve or whatever into more triple option, type stuff.

When Larry Smith was fired, the cuppboard was BARE! Pinkel brings in Brad Smith, the program starts to get a little buzz. Then Chase Daniel takes the program to a place they havent been since the 1960s.
I like Coach Pinkel. I've met him a few times over the years and he's a really likeable guy. Here is my problem with Missouri football. They get outcoached, ALOT. They seem to struggle with half time adjustments. Not just this year, but always. Thats as far as I will critize as I make it a point not to critize other coaches (professional karma).

They are a "young" team right now, who will get better in the next few years. Gabbart, their qb, is only 19 and starting as a true soph.
I'm a Mizzou season ticket holder, and losses like Baylor bother me, but I remember when my family first had season tickets and we'd be going 3-8, 4-7. A "down year" of 7-5, 6-6 will be ok with me for once. I know this team/program is still on the upswing.
As fans, we got spoiled the last two years. Look how much talent Mizzou lost in the NFL draft. Heck, TWO FIRST ROUNDERS!!!...I remember years they didnt have anyone drafted at all.
I like what they doing, and remember that Yost is a first year play caller and he will only get better as well.
Side bar: Seriously dude sitting next to Cat at last weeks game....STOP BOOING A 19 YEAR OLD KID! That drives me nuts! Also, "stop calling that play Pinkel"...A. We are 30 rows up ON THE OTHER sideline. B. Hes not the OC chief, turn and yell 65 rows up and yell at Yost the OC.
Sorry..didnt mean to hijack your thread.

I went from a high school staff to a middle school staff the last two years (change of job and what not).
I miss being a full time varsity coach (I'm on phones with our DC on Fridays). However, I've enjoyed the MS experince. Kids are egar to learn, and being the HC this year has really helped me prepare for a big job someday. Am I ready for that? No, but I did get to do alot of adminstrative stuff, that being a varsity coach I wouldnt have done.
Personally I say take whatever job best fits you. Where do you want to go? The thing about MS is its a shorter season, and maybe you can help out with the varsity to "be seen" by varsity coaches. Plus like was said, pick the best TEACHING job. Thats what needs to be most important.

We always worked our team periods like this:
Tuesday: Varisty 1 and 2 Wed: Varsity 1 and JV 1 Thursday: After Varsity practice jv had an hour to work on stuff
Being a small school most of our Varsity 2 offense was JV starters with maybe 4 exceptions

The staff I was on, there were 6 of us total for 60 kids. We all coached a position on both sidess of the ball.
HC- RBs/ DES Assistant 1: OC/OL/LBS Assistant 2: DC/QBS/Safteys Assistant 3: WR/CB..called JV O Assistant 4: JV OL/ Varsity DL Called JV D Assistant 5: Collected a check or whatever the F he did.
We didnt have titles or whatever. Everyone worked their position unless it was team time then the play callers called plays. On JV night all coaches were present.

I think $200/Lunch/Milage is very fair for a "consulatant" fee. If your willing to make yourself avalible to them later in the year as well via email/phonecalls whatever then even better.
I'd also tell them the fee covers a 2 hour follow up later when they are doing an install (just charge milage for that visit).

An hour away? Gass money, and $100 -$200 sounds pretty fair.

I'd say milage (standard is .30 a mile I think), hotel and $100. So realisticly an 4 or 6 hour clinic is costing them $250. Thats not bad at all.

As long as we have jumped to the "negitive" here....my future wife does some critizing.....To me, when we are at home, just the two of us.
In the stands shes supportive as hell. What we say to each other about things is between us. She teaches in the same district as I do (different building), but shes a good soilder through and through.

More of the realtionships part:
I dont have kids. My little sister is 16 years younger then me. While little girls her age were going to dance class and playing barbie, she was going to football camp/basketball camp. At 11 now, shes a warrior on the basketball floor.
I'll always remember her coming to elementry school basketball camp, being the only girl at camp and flat ballin' against boys in her class. Thats the stuff you remember most.

I like the t-shirt idea. Only because some girls get jealous that they dont have one. 2 years ago had a kid come play football, ONLY so his gf could wear a jersey on Friday night.

Im about to make a personal life change for the better (getting remarried). I've been married before and my ex wife hated sports. Hated them with a passion. She would come to one game a year because she felt like she had to. She'd get {censored} when I would watch film all day sunday. We would go watch a college football game and she'd people watch but complain the entire time.
My soon to be new wife, was a cheerleader in high school and in college (likes sports). She comes to all of my middle school home games, attends a few varsity games where I help out, loves going to college football games on Saturdays, etc. She doesnt understand the game that well (the qb is the "thrower"), but makes an effort to learn. Her only rule is when I get home, I have an hour to get over the loss. Yes she hates how much I'm gone, but she gets a nice reward trip this weekend out of the coaching stipend.
How much support do you get at home from your signifigant other? How much do they know about the game? In my last situation I didnt feel supported, now I do. How much effort do they put in learning the game, or at least listening to you vent? What do you feel is the role of the "coaches wife" so to speak?

I have 3, all hidden by a t-shirt. Not ashamed of them or anything, just not something I want my players to see.

Ok, I'd agree with that they dont count in standings so to speak. When I coached JV I'd be upset with the game until I got home, then I'd be over it.
We used to tape JV games like we did the varsity games to help us evaluate talent and correct mistakes. I was a JV/HC/DC and I game planned all the time for them.

JV games dont matter? Freshman games dont matter? Ok, I know in the grand scheme of things, they dont. But tell that 115 pound LT who gets jacked up on Monday nights to play that his games dont matter? No way.
I was an average football player. I wish I could come on some random message board and tell you I was all-state as a freshman and what not, but I wasnt. Yes, I did letter all four years of high school, but I LIVED for Monday nights as a Freshman and Sopohmore, thats when I got to shine. We busted our tails and during my 10th grade year we went undefeated (yes, yes that and a dollar gets you a coke out of the vending machine). That same group of guys as seniors won the schools first playoff game in history, because we learned how to play together and win together. Dont give me some line about, well if you were any sort of players you'd have played varsity as sophomores. Our numbers were good enough and our coaches patient enough to let us grow up together.
Monday nights were the best. 100 people in the stands, JV cheerleaders. It was great. Does it compare to Friday nights? No, totally different feeling. But at the time it was great and I would never tell a kid that his big chance of playing time was a glorified scrimmage or it didnt matter.

As a middle HC, I try to run what the Varsity runs. We took 0 snaps under center, used the exact same terminology as the do at the higher levels and try to be a "mini varsity".
I've used some creative licence to run some two back stuff and some empty stuff, but all out of the base varsity package. Your doing the kids a disservice by not teaching them a simple version of the varsity package. HOWEVER, your doing yourself a diservice if you dont try one or two things of your own to help yourself grow.

Today is the last day of padded practice for my middle schoolers. My how time flies.....
Anyway, any sugjestions on some "fun" drills to do at the end?
My practice plan today is
Stretch Spt DINDY Team D Shot-Gun Alley (3 vs. 3 5 yard battle) 8th grade lap (one last lap around the practice field, let each coach say a few words to them, have the 7th graders make a tunnel for them to go out of).
This seem good? I mean, we have one game to go (no practice tomorrow because of inservice and Monday is a walk thru). No new scheme to install, all just review for the most part.

I'll be honest...its not about the money, I was a volunteer coach for 4 years and loved it. Had same responsiblities and priviliges as the paid coaches.
I was the freshman boys basketball coach and they were cutting that position...$2400 I couldnt afford to lose.
I found a job at the next school district over..paid me $3200 more base, football stipend and I added track last January. This year I added middle school hoops as well. So in all I gained $8000 by moving districts and found the woman I'm going to marry (yes, she knows about it).
I loved the kids and coaches at my last school, but it was also time to move on professionally as well.

As a player, we went into pregame at 5 for 7:30 kickoff. It was dead silence. My first coaching gig same deal. As a middle school HC I keep it that way as well.
I do agree that kids focus differently. Our varsity kids blare music up till pre game warmups. It works for them. For me I like calm and quiet.
I know that 90% of my kids arent thinking about the game (High School or Middle School), and to be honest, if I was 17 (or when I was), I was thinking about nailing that girl in math class too, but when we went out for pregame, the switch flipped and I was ready to roll.

What year are you in at your school? Someone once said it takes four years to build a program.
Year one- Lose Big Year two- Lose little Year three- Win little Year four- Win Big
If last year was year one, and this year is year two, it seems your on the right path.
