How many of y'all have tattoos? Do you know any big time coaches with ink? Would you not hire a candidate because he had a tattoo? Thanks for your input.

It's a mainstream thing now, though. So, unless you did a Tyson on your face it probably wouldn't bother us.

I have 4 below my knee on my right leg. The first principal I worked for called me on it. Thought one of my tattoos was a "pot leaf". I had to explain to him that it wasn't. Real jerk that guy. My parents were in the "how are you going to get hired?" mode when I got my tattoos. I said, "I won't go into the interview with shorts on." Also, I think my work should be judged and not is what is on my leg.
I agree...if stuff was on my neck and face, etc. it would be different.
Mine are personal and not offensive in nature. Never had a problem with it in my current job.

I spent four years in the Navy in the mid 80's and was countless tattoo parlors with my buddies overseas. But, I never thought about getting one. Just never had a reason too. Like I never had an earring in the 80's when they were popular either. Not much of a "fad" guy, I guess. I don't have anything against people that do have them, though. I'd hire someone with a tat. I'm assuming that if they are a teacher that the principal hired, I'd do the same and hire them.

I agree, I have no tattoos but I was considering one on my upper left arm/outside shoulder. I would definitely keep it hidden, I just wasn't sure how rare or common they were in coaching. Thanks.

I am 31 years old, a head varsity football coach and currently have 8 tattoos. They can all be covered if need be, nothing crazy on my neck or forearms. All 8 of them have significant meaning to me (and my family) but I didn't have a problem getting hired as a teacher with my first job or at my current job nor did it create any probelms getting hired as an assistant. Now as a head coach, I obviously wouldn't have a problem hiring an assistant with tattoos, as long as they weren't all over his face or something.

i dont have any, im not against them, just cant thin of anything i want on my body the rest of my life. I plan on getting something done on my arms. I will have everything done above the elbow so a short sleeve shirt would cover it.
My buddy, our WR coach has a lot of ink, mostly on his chest and torso, but he does have one on his forearm and one on his elbow, the only 2 that are visible if he is in a t shirt. No one has ever said anything to him about the tattoos... Half our team has tattoos

I have 3, all hidden by a t-shirt. Not ashamed of them or anything, just not something I want my players to see.

Brett Bielema (Wisconsin's HC) has a tigerhawk on his lower leg (got it when he played at Iowa). None myself; haven't seen anything I can't live without on my body for the rest of my life. My last HC and current HC and an assistant all have ink.

Yeah, it's not like I'd get a dolphin on my right cheek haha, it's actually in memory of my friend who just killed, Jasper Howard on the UConn football team.

Thank you and anyone else for the support.

Ideally, it's a non-issue.
Pragmatically, keep em' covered.

Ideally, it's a non-issue. Pragmatically, keep em' covered. That's what I was thinking, people can say "it shouldn't matter" but I was think well maybe that does make a difference in the interview process. I don't think I'd ever get one that couldn't be covered by a T shirt though.

what I do not understand is why people who get them hide them. if they are so important why not front and center for the world to see.

A bunch of my players have them. I have 3. 1 on my back and 1 on each arm. They are all covered. I cover them because I didn't get them to display them and they all have signifcance to me. In my opinion, theres bigger battles to be fought then someone having a tattoo

One of our coaches has some on his arms, they're pretty cool, truthfully. They aren't an issue because they're like, 85% covered by a typical T-shirt and are not visible in game attire at all.
Personally, I think as long as it's non-offensive (subjective but there can be common ground) and relatively easily covered, it's no biggie. Especially if it's in memory of someone who passed too soon.

I'd hire a guy with tatoo's... but I'd be wary of him...
Sure sign of needing special attention...
"look at me... look at me!" Is what tatoos say to me.

I don't have any ink, yet. I've just never had the time and money at the same time. I am ok with coaches having tattoos, but I think they should be something that is easily covered if need be. If they have ink on their forearms I might have to ask them to wear sleeves, on the legs wear shorts. I have to agree with khalfie that guys that are covered are pretty boys that are just in need of attention. I had a guy on my staff this year that is covered darn near head to toe and he fits that catagory perfectly. I think he might have ruined it for everyone in the future.

Oh what a bunch of bullcrap. If someone has a tatoo that you can't see it's not calling for attention. Man that's pretty closed minded. I have 2 and you would never see them if I did not want you to. And they have important meanings for me and no one has said anything about them.
Now on the other end, my brother in law just got an arm sleeve done. He is a big biker looking dude so I think his look and that Tatty would compromise his chance to work in a school setting.
But anyways, as long as you don't make it something to draw attention to you and away from what you are doing (being a professional and a role model) then do what you want, it's your body, it's your life.

I agree that having a tattoo that you can't see is fine. Heck I'm planning on getting ink as soon as I can, but there is a point where it becomes too much. The guy on my staff crossed that line, besides he was a crappy coach.

Yeah I don't think it really affects your coaching. Would you really not hire a good coach because he had a tattoo??? Lombardi had a tattoo. Does that make him a bad coach!??!

I have a tattoo on my left shoulder (a heart with half of the heart being a football) and we have three other coaches on staff with tattoos. I'm pretty sure that the tattoo hasn't affected my coaching ability. All this talk makes me want to go out and get another one now.

A friend of mine who was in the President's Honor Guard (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, etc) once told me that they used to say if you got a tattoo below your elbow you were pre-determining your income bracket.
