Well its pouring where I am. We really have no indoor practice facilty to speak of. We have a very small gym, and a band room that I may be able to use.
We are looking at rain all day tomorrow as well. We dont play again till Tuesday.
I've already shortend practice today assuming I wont be able to get outside, or if I do, to make it quick to avoid sickness/injury and the like.
Is there any thing that can be done indoors? What do you like to do during a rain practice?
Again, these are middle school kids.

We had to go inside a few times last season at the middle school I coach. It basically turned into a walk through. We went in the gym and walked through the plays against different defenses to sure up the blocking assignments and work on handoffs and stuff like that.

Mental reps are just as important as physical ones.. board time in a classroom is always good.. you can use a hallway to work on linemen assignents.. have your receivers catch in the gym..
We practiced in the rain last week.. good muddy practice.. ruined some good balls.. kids (program) can only afford 1 pair of cleats.. so they were wet the rest of the week..
Really funked up my lockerroom..
You need to practice in the rain from time to time.. always a couple of times a year if its available..
but.. I am not one to practice rain or shine.. not much learning going on when the kids are wet..
sometimes better to simulate the situations with wet/muddy balls than actually being out in it..

I always like to use rainy days to have some fun and do some hitting. You have a ton of time before your next game, let them hit.

We usually don't tackle to the ground anyway, so we do almost everything we would do outside in the gym. Only work the quick game and play action during 7 on 7, and inside drill and team period against shields instead of "live".

Last week we were in side for a day, we worked out every possible blitz and front imaginiable (including rediculous things like what we would do against a 5-5) for our base running plays with the OL and backs. It really helped reinforce blocking rules and the kids had a good time trying to come up with ways for the rules to not work (learned quite a bit in the process). We also did quite a bit of running in the halls and a conditioning circuit with everything from pushups/lunges to sprinting/long run. The kids seemed to like the change up.

We went out in the rain for a short practice. Did "Superman" pursuit drill, some OKLAHOMA in the mud (Kids loved it) and team D, Team 0. Sun is shining today, so we should have a basic practice. Thanks for all your imput.

We practice regardless of weather except for lightning. What are you going to do if it rains at game time? We convince our guys that no matter the weather, it is TROJAN WEATHER!

Dont get me wrong, I know "what are you going to do if it rains"..... it was more a basic question of what can you do? I didnt have a facility and it at the time, was a monsoon.

I practice in the rain...scrim. We tighten our splits, run wedges, work on QB/C exchange.
WHat happens if it's raining during a game?

Some thoughts for the next time your team has to stay inside...
-We do a progressive walk-through tackling drill. First reps are face to face only working on explosion, locking onto the ball carrier, and driving them back. On second reps, we back up to about 2.5 yards and "duck walk" up to the ball carrier then finish it with the first rep stuff. Third and final reps, we back up to around 7.5 yards and add a sprint into the equation. It has really improved our tackling form and, in turn, our tackling ability. (We don't go to the ground on this. It's all about pop, squeeze, and drive.) We have also added an angle tackling walk-through to this at the end. We need to do that one more often.
-Similar to the walk-through tackling. We have begun doing "duck-walk" work. We walk-through the "duck-walk" a few times, then we jog through while "duck-walking", then we sprint some "duck-walks". It shows the kids we are still fast when we "duck-walk" and gives them some confidence in being able to breakdown and do it.
-Friday, I was trying to let our kids take ownership of their team. We put an eighth grader in charge of our Friday conditioning, with us having a close eye on them obviously. After going back inside and watching the film, where we still are standing up on the snap, the seventh graders decided to make a human chute to be sure that they were firing off low. Half of them would form chutes and the other half would fire off under them. One kid used his shoe to simulate the ball being snapped so they could fire off the defensive line as well.

I always go out. I hate indoor practices. I think going out for 1 hour is better than 2 in the gym. Fumble drill, One on ones, etc.
Best rule for wet cleats... newspaper packed inside they will be dry my the next day.

Start practice with down ups. Once they are wet and cold, not much use for them trying to prevent it during practice. Nothing left to do but deal with it.
Throw in some Oklahoma drills, or really any sort of "hoot and holler" drills. Make sure it's a real up-tempo practice so they they are constantly moving and they don't have to worry about being wet. Maybe throw in some fumble recovery drills (dive around in the mud) and anything other "fun" drills. Make the rain practice a fun practice.
And, it's a rule, they better get their equipment home and wash it.

We'll go out if at all possible but I understand what you're saying. Sometimes you have to use common sense. Sometimes it's counterproductive and downright dangerous. We had a Thursday game the week on Labor Day, which made Labor Day an offensive work day and Tuesday a defensive work day. We practiced Monday morning and right before 7-on-7 (which would have been followed by the team period) the skies opened up- as you described, a monsoon. We went as long as we could but there was standing water within minutes, the ball was impossible to handle, and everybody was drenched, cold, and miserable. We went in and scheduled a longer offensive period for Wednesday's walk-through. It rained all day Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday's practice was scheduled for 4 and it was still raining steadily. The field was under water. No way I was going to do change-of-direction defensive stuff on that field and get somebody hurt. We stayed in in full pads and did almost a complete defensive practice: ST walk-through, form tackling, defensive fundamentals, team defensive adjustments, and inside drill. We also had to add some 7-on-7 during walk-throughs on Wed.. We got just about everything we wanted accomplished. In our minds that was a lot more than we could say if we'd tried to go out in that crap.

Here is the beautiful Pacific Northwest we practice int he rain regardless.
Truth is, it rains here differently than most parts of the country. We get a more constant lighter rain. Like all day. Like 5 outta 7 days from October through May.
If you don't practice in the rain you wouldn't get many practices in.
We just came off the field today because of lightning. Lightning is not common here in the fall.
