We went out in the rain for a short practice. Did "Superman" pursuit drill, some OKLAHOMA in the mud (Kids loved it) and team D, Team 0. Sun is shining today, so we should have a basic practice. Thanks for all your imput.

Well its pouring where I am. We really have no indoor practice facilty to speak of. We have a very small gym, and a band room that I may be able to use.
We are looking at rain all day tomorrow as well. We dont play again till Tuesday.
I've already shortend practice today assuming I wont be able to get outside, or if I do, to make it quick to avoid sickness/injury and the like.
Is there any thing that can be done indoors? What do you like to do during a rain practice?
Again, these are middle school kids.

I think it's great. The girls - eh, yea, why not include the cheerleaders. For everyone else...if you want to be included, then play football or cheer. and for the parent who wrote the letter - STFU and home school your kid. I would keep the players in the cafeteria with in general population, I wouldn't allow them to eat in a different room. I think that's bad. I agree but my assistant principal said to do it this way, and Im gonna "play ball". To me this whole thing is a non issue and when the next parent gets pissy because they took the football team out of the cafe and into a special room its all on them.

On a lighter note this morning, what (if any ) football video games do you like? I've been playing football video games since I had my old school nintendo way back in 1988. Super Play Action Pass all the way to Madden 2010 now.
For me its still old school Tecmo SUPER BOWL ( the sequal to Tecmo Bowl). It was the first game that had subs and you could run 8 plays(!). I was money with Steve Deberg and the Chiefs.
Also a big fan of College Football 1997 (I used to school people with the option).
Whats your favorite? Do you use things like play book creator to draw stuff up? Do you play franchises and dynasties? Or when you do have deversion time you dont want to spend it playing games?

Talk to assistant principal a few moments ago. Players are now sitting in the FACS room away from the student body. Does this make it worse?

It was really ok with me for them to sit where ever the rest of the week, but like was said, on game days, its all about the brotherhood.

The other kids didnt seem to have a problem with it. The only complaints I got were from 2 cheerleaders and a softball girl.
My principal brought it up to me, as a FYI more then anything else.

Last week my players asked me if they could sit together at lunch. I said "sure sounds good". My only rule was it had to be everyone, not just a few of them, and the kids did so. We filled two tables with jerseys, the kids were a postive example in the cafe and we went out and won big.
Negitives: 1. An angry parent letter to my adminstrator, saying that our school was to cliquish anyway (they are middle school kids) and that by allowing the football team to sit together we were making the problem worse.
2. The softball team and cheerleaders felt un-included. Why cant we sit with the team? and so on....
My principal was great. She told the softball girls if they wanted to sit together on game days, that was fine...they only didnt do it because, no one from softball had asked them. She thought it was great team building and was proud of the example my boys showed.
My question is... Am I doing the right thing? I know this is a tough age, but who are we hurting? When asked if I was going to do it again this week by my principal I said "We are going to do it till we lose" ;D.
Could I handle it different? Are we seperating ourselves from the rest of the school?

Have him talk to a professional. Bad things are going to happen, just put him in a spot to build his confidence up early.

I;ve only been at small schools, so for the most part, 75% of the JV were the varsity back ups.

If its my golden arm, qb of the future frosh, the varsity OL is playing till their number one d is out.
On staffs I've been on, we tend to sub once we get the 4 td lead. Seniors who dont play much play D and the JV O plays.

Maybe Im wrong here, but...... I hate it, HATE it when our JV is in the game and the other guy is still rolling with his first unit. Yes, I realize that his "1's" need work, but when the score is 48-7, you scoring two junk tds vs. my jv isnt really helping is it, other then looking better in the sunday paper?
Whats the sportsman thing to do? Roll your starters back in if they keep theirs in? As the coach whos ahead do you not sub until they do?

I've always seen it done at half. Yes its the football team's job to win the game (Homecomming sucks if you lose). However, let the kids have their moment. Normally there is enough time to make adjustments with those kids anyway.

agree with the work on us idea. Also, what about setting goals? Like if we have more then 2 turnovers, we run. If we have less then 350 total offense we run...etc?

Missouri. Gabbert is going to be a player. Yes he will have his ups and downs, but by the time he is a senior WOW. Dario Alexander showed why he was ahead of Maclin on the depth chart at one point.
FSU/Miami was a great game. Does Bobby B even coach anymore? Is he just a figure head at this point?

Well here its the last day of school. I have a meeting with my team in an hour, then a staff BBQ and done for the summer (well teaching wise).
I met with the players before school started, and I've spent all day supervising, trying to keep kids out of trouble, or at least my kids.
Any problems the last day of school for you guys? I'm giving my kids Friday-Friday off then we start team camps and stuff.
Thanks for a great year fellas. See you in the fall when I know we will all have much to discus. Best of luck in your summer programs.

We had a staff of 6, this is what we did. Head Coach/OC did the offense, along with the OL coach. I as the JV HC/DC coached the scout squad (opponents alignment, plus I got to do a few coaching points about steps, tackling, whatever), when it was our offense. When it was OUR defense vs the opponent, the HC/OC/ JV OC did the scout squad while the varsity DC (and OL coach) and I did OUR defense. The 6th guy? Who knows what the hell he did.

I have one in now. At my last job did it all the time, no one said anything. The AD went nuts once when a coach was spitting and it was caught on tv.
My new job I just have to be more sly about it. Been warrend twice, so I've backed off a bit. But again, it is what it is.

I've never eaten during a game. Not once. Maybe some gum, or some water....or some Skoal if I can hide it well.
At my previous school, the assistant coaches would all go out to eat after school (Mcdonalds, Arbys...closest thing near our high school).
At my current one we have alot of prep to do, so normally we just call DOminos and have them deliever.

I have and currently do coach with people that were coaches of mine when I was in school. The hardest thing I is to call these coaches by their first name....it just doesn't feel right. I also call most other coaches I work with coach, and introduce them to my family as Coach whatever. That was really hard for me. To this day its hard for me to call my HC who I then went on to work for "Mike". Its a respect thing. Another coach I worked with and played for I called "CRAIG". Never Coach.... Total respect thing.

If I'm at school and making a phone call, even to a coaching friend I stay professional.."Coach Urgen this is Coach Jenkins over at XXHS or whatever.
If Im at a coaching clinic its always, First name, last name, and where I coach. Of the course of the conversation, I figure we'll get to the title crap.

I know we are all big on our own school and pride, but today I found a box with last years camp shirts in them. Would anyone like to trade one of mine for one of yours? Could be kind of fun to support each other.

What irks me more, is looking at the team photo and seeing a quitter in the middle of it. Thats why I pushed to have team photos done in week 7 or 8 instead of pre-season.

Agree. Those guys who work 18 hour days, 7 days a week in season, more power to them. To me it seem counter productive.
I have a deep passion for this game, and our profession, but while it is a big part of my life, it does not define who I am.
During the off-season I do some research during the school day (Full time ISS) and dont take it home. Granted that doesnt keep me from laying in bed thinking about the buck sweep, but still...
Pre-season Im devoted to the work outs and weight room, but I'm still home 3 nights a week.
In season we meet Sunday nights at 5 and work til 9. Monday through Thursday in the office at 7 am home by 7 pm.
I love video games and movies. It doesnt make me less of a coach because I do that stuff. I m better because I can take care of me and my family first.
