In a similar situation.. heres a few things we have done 1) Do everything first class, if they need new equipment, uniforms, etc. Find a way to do it. 2) Establish a culture of mental and physical toughness from day 1. You are going to lose a few but those who do quit, you realy dont want anyway. Stress discipline and finishing in everything you do 3) Keep everything simple. Keep your offense and defense simple as possible so they can play fast 4) Focus hard on special teams 5) Make sure your assistants are great teachers of the game. Also make sure that while they spread the "vision" of the HC, that they are still building relationships with their players. Goes back to the saying "they dont care how much you know untill they know how much you care" 6) Build relationships with the faculty and community. Hold youth camps, touchdown club night once a week for the parents to come and watch the game film and socialize etc. 7) Recruit the hallways hard. Even those kids who don;t quite look like football players.

I'm in a similar situation right now. Even if you sometimes doubt yourself, the players cannot know it. Don't preach moral victories but start with trying to get good at a few things and work from there. Another thing we did this past off season was step back and analyze everything we did. Ie; why do we drill this way, why do we practice x amount on this and not that. Another thing during tough times is to emphasize every single day to finish everything and demand their best effort in everything from film study to special teams and everything in between. Feel free to pm me

I have been coaching in Ohio for 3 years now at the varsity level. I am not a teacher and dont plan to be. Only have to be CPR certified, pass background check, and have a pupil activity supervisor permit which is just a 3 hour class you have to go to.

Some things we do: during group drills we have them jog back to the line and re run plays, also during any kind of play review time (group, team, inside run etc) always use the no huddle calls your qb would in the game instead of the true name i.e. (call out Deuce Gun Zorro 9944 as opposed to Deuce Gun 44 Zone)
our offense schedule goes like this pre practice fit and drive (on boards under chutes) Combo drills 1-2 other drills inside run pass pro team

coach, what I would do is ask the Head coach, Offensive/Defensive Coordinator, whoever to clinic you on their systems so you have a foundation of knowledge that you can teach . I was the same way when I first started , youll become more active with confidence and experience.

With those schools that still play on Fridays, could you be successful without Monday practices ? To further elaborate on that, the use of online video technology may be the only way of getting "mental reps" on these "off days"

I wouldnt worry about it too much. You have to remember most kids that age and even going into their freshman, sophmore years of high school dont know the value of hard work. JUst let him be a kid and enjoy it and offer him advice when he asks for it.

As I am watching a replay of the D1AA semi final game, the announcers were talking about how not untill the semi finals, is there a coaches challenge option to review a call made by the official, which got me thinking...does anyone feel that there should be a option to challenge the call at the HS level, maybe even just for the playoffs ? just a thought

Ok guys, I have a couple interviews coming up and I was wondering this... If you were a head coach what would realy impress you when it came to an assistant, in terms of presentation, maybe like packets, etc ?
Of course I plan on bringing the resume, cover letter, transcripts, and 2 letters of recomendation but I was wondering if there was anything else I should keep in mind ? thanks

played in this offense in highschool at Monroe SMCC in Michigan. You would think with having onl 6-7 plays that people would be able to stop this offense easily..its all about execution.

Helllo all, First off I want to thank everyone who responded to the post I had last week about being blown out, this is more of an update/venting (again)...
well when it rains it pours,
Friday night we found out before the game that our best player has fractured vertabraes in his neck and is done for the season, then during the game after 4 turnovers, our best lineman tears his ACL, ...we ended up losing 55-0.
I know the biggest thing right now is to have patience and stay positive but damn it is frusterating. We will be green this week (starting 2 sophmores on OL and 1 on DL) but the team we are playing is not good so we have a chance of beating them
I know it is my job to motivate them but My question is, with these kids so use to losing before my staff took over, what can I do to boost that confidence back up ? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appriacated guys thanks

Who was your HS Coach and is he still a part of your life? Jack Giarmo at Monroe Saint Mary Catholic Central, Yes he is, his family has been freinds of my family long before he was a head coach and still are friends. I speak to him atleast once a week
What impact did he have on your choosing to coach if any? He had some. I knew I wanted to be a coach when I was 12 years old but theres definently aspects of his coaching that I use.
What would you tell him if you could, and how could that impact the way you coach today? He knows
