Hey coaches, I have been searching and it seems like there is alot less colleges doing spring coaches clinics these days. I was fortunate to attend Eastern Michigan's "chalk talk", and Ohio State has one coming up soon but I would be interested to hear about any others. I will link what I have found below Ohio State (April 11-13) ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/2020/2/14/coaches

Honestly, in that situation, I think you just go with your normal after school routine from the beginning. Iowa has essentially eliminated two-a-days anyway so that's what we do even if practice starts before school does. yes I would normally agree with you but when all 9 of your regular season oppoenents will have 2-a-days and don't have to worry about being in school until after Labor Day, we are trying to adapt. In our state, we are allowed "practice days" so we could essentially make up lost time, its just the first time we have ever experienced the calendar not allowing us to do so

Hello coaches, I am at a small private school of just around 325 students. We are notorious for starting school very early in August and this year we won't be able to have true 2-a-days because of how the school calendar falls. Normally we have gone 3pm-8pm , 2 hours on, 1 hour off, 2 hours on but that won't be possible this year since the kids will be in school from 8:00am-2:30pm. Just out of curosity, how would you structure your pre-season? Mind you as well, we bus our kids to our practice field which is 1.5 miles away and rent our home field so we don't have the luxury of just walking outside our school building to practice. We do have a big patch of propert we could do a walk through on but not a full practice. We have approximately 35 kids on varsity and another 25-30 on JV. We have been fortuante to be successful, winning 2 state titles in the last 10 years but this is the earliest we have ever started school. I know there is guys out there who don't even do 2-a-days anymore so I am curious to hear your thoughts.
thanks in advance, Kyle

For some reason I am always a way better coach when I have those type of guys!
I graduated high school in 2005. started coaching varsity football in 2006. From 2011-2015 I coached 3 D1 FBS players, one who started 5 years at Michigan State, one who started at Maryland until their coach was "associated" (PC phrase) with the death of a young man during summer conditioning, and one at a MAC school. 2 of them played in those national All-American games which was pretty cool. I thought that was the norm when you coach at a "big school" (high school of 1500+). I became a "permanent" Head Coach for the first time in 2015-2019 (I had been an interim Head Coach in 2010 at a bad school), and never had one of those type of kids. I currrently coach at my alma mater now, and MAYBE , just MAYBE we have a young man who breathed-slept-lived football, he could be a D1 FBS player based on my experience but he does not.
From what I have been told by several D2 and D3 coaches who come through our school to visit. Due to the transfer portal/NIL , everything is cycling down. You will start to see less true high school-to-FBS athletes unless they are THAT good. D2 becomes the "MAC/Sunbelt" D1 type kids, and so on. Many lower level colleges are even recruiting as "hey we will offer you a scholarship, we will help you do great here so you can transfer to "FBS University' and get that NIL money". Some of the these coaches are actually 2nd generation college coaches and have told me they hate this mentality but that is the reality of college football now so they are embracing it.
What I have also heard is a trend is D3/smaller D2 schools going to NAIA and more JUCOs adding football (I am guessing cuase of the popularity of the transfer portal?). Crazy times for sure!

Against the T , 6 down lineman front wiht mostly 1's, 7s, and 9's, 20 linebackers, a "Vampire" at 1 foot behind the linebackers in a 00 technique then 2 safeties at 8 yards over the tight ends in 80 techniques. The defensive front would squeeze and spill. The "Vampire" would read the QB's face mask and flow opposite, safeties would read tight ends
edit: We were successful with wide trap, Belly Iso, Dive, toss and play action. However it seemed to be the trend this year.

In Michigan around us, it depends on the host school. Most schools prefer online payment only but we are one of the few who still allow cash tickets. We also dont own our home field and pay rent for what thats worth.

Coaches Again thank you for all the advice and insight. It has given me alot to think about. Today I am struggling to grip things with my left hand in addition to the usual pain I have been experiencing. We had a terrible practice today and I am starting to wonder how effective I am in my current condition. I have had one doctor (a childhood friend) tell me to try spinal traction and inversion tables first before trying surgery since i have already tried PT and a chiropractor. Like someone else has mentioned, my core muscles have pretty much shut down. I type this as I sit here next to my 7 year old son and think about quality of life and what he needs from his dad. Not an easy deal at all..again I truly appreciate all the advice and well wishes, I read every single post.
take care Kyle

Hello coaches, I am going to try to keep it as simple as possible when asking this question. I am 37, entering my 19th season of coaching varsity football but unfortantley I am in bad shape physically as a recent trip to the ER, confirmed by further imaging found 4 herniated discs in my back. It is a struggle to coach physically as sometimes I have to drag my right foot and I can't demonstate some techniques like I normally would. I am struggling mentally not being able to do these things or exercise as I await my date to consult with a surgeon. I currently wear a back brace and have to take several breaks throughout practice to sit down otherwise my legs begin to weaken and I feel a ton of pain.
My question for you all is, if any of you have gone through something similar, how did you manage to remain productive in your coaching and/or teaching job?
At this point, I am physically miserable but I plan on pushing off the surgery until our season is done because I would feel bad leaving our program high and dry in the season, as a special education teacher I know my students would struggle with a sudden change like this, and lastly, I have heard TERRIBLE things about back surgeries.
Like I said, I have no idea what kind of surgery I would have, and what the process would involve until after August 18. I don't know how short-term disability works or whether its worth it vs. using sick days. I also have a 7 year old son and 10 month old daughter I split custody of with their mother so I am trying to keep them in mind as well.
I know this post is probaly more rambling then it should be but I am looking for advice from anyone who has "been there" or at least coached with someone who has been through these issues. I would appreciate hearing anyones stories as I weigh my options.
Lastly, as August begins in full swing, I wish all of you the best of luck this season and thank you for sharing your knowledge and advice with all of us readers, God Bless- Kyle

Building relationships with everyone in town. My last Head Coach position was in a small rural town, first thing I did was do a home visit with every returning player I could with their families. Those families were buisness owners in town. I have coached in the suburbs, rural, and city. Give me small town high school football anyday, those people took pride in their school and the school was the place to be for the kids whether it was sports, rec leagues, or classes.

Heres my thing. If you have rule regarding mouthpieces, you better be providing them mouthpieces. If you have a rule regarding they wear football only shirts to workouts etc., then you better provide them with shirts to wear. Otherwise use your camp fee $ to take care of it. We are in a county that is between 50-65% poverty level since the Ford plants closed down, if you want a certain look provide it, otherwise you are going to get what they can pay for. Personally as a parent I wouldnt spend that much on a damn mouthpiece but to each his own.

This seems to have the potential to be a lose / lose situation. If you fail to supervise and something happens, you are in trouble, but if you supervise and someone asks: "Why are you watching kids get undressed?" You could also find yourself in trouble. Just gotta try to keep things in perspective in today's climate. I actually saw this exact situation unfold at a school I coached at in another sport. There was hazing allegations in years prior so he or an assistant took turns making sure the lockerroom was empty before going into the coaches office. Johny wasnt happy he wasnt playing as much and accused the coach of inappropriate behavior, mind you, the coach stood in front of a glass 2 way window that the coaches office could see into the locker room and vice versa, but school board didn't like said coach, he had a losing season and was non-renewed.

I think it really depends on the type of kids you have. At my previous school wher I was the HC, we gave them a paper scouting report. They seemed to like that more. I also knew some of the kids didnt have internet at home so doing something digital was not going to be as efficient.
At my current school, we are a 1:1 iPad school, so we upload our scouting reports made on google slides to a google classroom page just for football. We also make a short 6-8 clip playlist.
Like other posters have said, be smart about how much information you give them. Too much is overload and confusion. Its like a study guide for a test, give them what they need to know, and review through the week. Our DC only covers an oppoenent's top 3 runs, 3 passes, and 3 formations. Thats it. Anything beyond that is not going to be remembered. On special teams, I focus on 1-2 bullet points of information per unit, and on offense, we basically just focus on are they odd-even or TNT (we're double tight T).

I am a big fan of Boombah turf shoes. Comfortable and have grip on the bottom if you are trying to demonstrate footwork.

we have had kids with severe cases of CRS (Can't Rememeber Sh**) and it would take them 9 weeks to remember even numbers are on the right. The joys of coaching MS-HS Football. Yup. This was high school but its kind of like when you see a baby crying in public. Its cute when it isnt your kid, otherwise all you can say is ah ****

As several others have said, it depends on the kid, the position and the assignment. To give you some subtstance to your answer, there was a study done years ago by a former coach, Larry Zierlein (forgive me if I am misspelling his last name) where he found that if you don't run a play at least 3 times a game its not worth practicing. There is only so much time in a day so you have to decide based on the kids you have, if the time is worth the investment. We have had kids who pick things up in 3 days and off we go, and we have had kids with severe cases of CRS (Can't Rememeber Sh**) and it would take them 9 weeks to remember even numbers are on the right.
Edit: I will add this. Like a teacher, find multiple ways to teach the assignment. Video, walk through, hand out, powerpoint, run through.

Hi coaches I was just wondering if anyone had any resources for oversized cleats outside of your typical amazon/ebay/eastbay options? We have also reached out to a couple of local MAC and a Big 10 school but havent heard back yet. We are looking for cleats in sizes from 16-20. We have a couple of young kids (freshmen and sophmores) wearing big cleats that should only get bigger over time. thank you for any help in advance Size 18 cleats , O/D lineman cleats are specifically what we are looking for at this time.

Please remove if this isnt the place for this post but has anyone heard of this JUCO ? I know they had a campus in California at one time. I am not asking for this to turn into a bash-them session, just asking for any experiences that any coaches on here may have had with them. It sounds like their new AD comes from Independence CC (of Last Chance U fame) but I can't find out much else about them. www.cccollege.edu/michigan-njcaa-programI think a JUCO in Detroit would be a GREAT thing because there is a ton of a talent that just needs some academic support to move on but the picture on this website doesn't exactly sell me. I hope I am wrong and they are doing great things but I would love to hear about any coaches experiences with the Community Christian College branches which from my research are official members of the NJCAA .

hello coaches
because of some health issues and being a single dad, I wasn't able to get out to clinics like I normally have. I was wondering. What are some of the best online clinics you have watched this off-season? I have a subscription to Chief Pigskin but I am always looking for good sources to learn from...
thanks for any responses

I currently receive $3000 an assistant at my alma mater where I am a coordinator and Director of Special Ed.
My best stipend as an assistant was $6K in a wealthy area in northwest Ohio
Best stipend as a Head Coach was $7K in middle class Michigan which started at $2000 but gave a $1000 bonus for every year you stayed. I always wondered why only 2 of my predecessors in program history ever made it past 5 years lol
I am ok with the stipend I have now but it comes down to other things like being paid for off-season weight room time, summer camps, etc. It all helps.

hey coaches, I was having a conversation with another coach tonight about how alot of the times, we recall the offense of great teams we coached against in our careers. My question for you is
What was the best defense you coached against in your career? What was their scheme? Did they have D1 talent or just well coached?
Any stories would be appreciated. I am curious to see what the common traits of these teams will be. thanks in advance, take care

Hey coaches, Usually there is a thread out there that lists college/regional clinics by state. I haven't seen it this year (and if I did then my apoligies), but I am looking for any college or regional coaches clinics in the midwest (Michigan-Ohio-Indiana-Illinois) as I would like to hit a few more this year aside from the regular Glazier clinics. They put on a great program but just want to try something different. Thanks in advance for any postings provided.
