Have any of you heard of a high school team giving a team the whole week off during a bye week. No practice... Just have players and coaches get away from each other for one week and come back the following week. May have merit.. especially at this point in the year. Love to hear if anyone has has a team do this.

both...my cell is best though... text is usually the choice of my players.. this is the world they live in and I am adapting... Just tonight I have gotten 5 text from 5 different players about football things... I have learned kids LOVE to text and this is the language they use more then not. I send a general text to my whole varsity team probably 2 times a week... reminders of what I want... Not what I would use but it is the choice of this generation. I am 40 and I am trying to adapt to this generation.

IMO dynamic routes/warm ups are falling the way of animals that no longer are on earth..
Can coaches on here recall a time in the 80s/90's when they were in school when they did a ton of static stretching before practice (Quad stretches, hamstrings, back, arms... 15 minutes or so). Now most teams do not do this. Many would say they are behind the times. About 15 years ago or so (more or less 5 years) dynamic routines became the rage... Static stretching was out of favor and it was something that should be done at the end of practice... some studies say not all...
IMO the dynamic routine will go the way of the Sabre Tooth Tiger and static stretching in the next 10- 15 years... It will be gone except for a small programs. I could be wrong but that is my opinion.
I do believe my program is a great example of a case study as to why it is really not needed...

Like I said earlier we incorporated this 2 years ago. We have had a decrease in pulls and in overall injuries. Both years we played into December (5-6 weeks later then most teams) and are injuries were less and we wasted less practice time and did more meaningful warm up / Indy stuff.
It has really benefited our program greatly.

DO stance and start.. EVERY Position..
QB/WR pat/gos...
DL Backpeddle/some cone drills..Weave drills...
OL Stance - Start.. Bag drills for agilities... Ladders....
DL - Bag drills/Ladders... Agilities..
LB - Same as above
RB - Ton of drills...ladders, cone drills, footwork, stance/start.. get offs,
WR - Pat/Go... Get off.. short burst.. 5 yds.. 10 yds.. 20 yds.. Posture drills, cone drills, ladders, stance/start....
I mean go throw each of your positions and see what you can do with them that is football related and where you are not wasting time.

Have gone two full seasons and we eliminated totally team stretch. Players go right into indy with position coaches. Pat/go... stance start.... Agility... No static stretching at all and no more dynamic....all football specific indy stuff like others mentioned. Saw our pulls from years past actually go down.
Two years ago had two players with pulls....
Last year we went all of camp with none... Minor stuff but nothing that required missing much if any practice.
We also eliminated them from workouts. Go 2 sets of 5 of overhead squats and we get into it.
Have not seen any increase in muscle pulls since we incorporated this in January.

Filming practice is a MUST in our program. Being doing it for 10 years. We film it and load it to HUDL. By 6:00 it is up.
We film - 7 on 7, triangle drill, inside run/ 9 on 9 .. some team portions.. some special teams too...
It is outlined for the managers when they are to do it on the schedule.
On average we film 70 - 95 snaps a day of practice. All varsity position coaches comment at night on their own. Instant feedback for players. Been doing this on HUDL since 2010.
We film everything. We film minicamps without pads... We are filming our 6 day camp this week as well. It is not that hard. Just have to commit to it. It is the reason why we win games. It is not talent. We are the only team in our area that films practice too.

HUDL Guys
See some of you have had problem with kids watching film. I have a question
DO YOU MAKE IT INTERACTIVE WITH THEM?
You can make clips and send it to your group. I did it with QBs last year. I would make 20 or so clips and put "What coverage is this? Why" "Who is # 3 ? WHat is his responsibility does he have".... Players within our group QB/WR respond and send the clips back to me. This is our interactive scouting report.
Our DC does the same thing with his Linebackers - He does all check with me's on defense. So he will say "What is our check to this" Check to this.... The players answer and forward their answers/responses back to the DC. By Wednesday Hay is in the barn and Thursday we are walking thru.
This interactive approach has helped us maximize our film sessions and get more productivity out of them. We use it like a classroom session - homework.
Again we have done this now for two years so it is just apart of our culture. It is just what they do....

We have had HUDL since 2010 and it really revolutionized our program and how we meet/breakdown film. Our game ends on Friday Night at around 9:00 - 9:30 range. Our game is usually uploaded before midnight. Our trades (all 13 games last year we traded via HUDL. Had the film by 1-2:00 AM Saturday Morning). So here is what I have told our staff the past two years - 1. We meet Sundays at 4:30 PM At that meeting all players have been graded/evaluated by position coach and we review our 2 deep depth chart. Finalize any personnel issues we may have had. 2. Review/Identify Special Teams.
After this we break off offense/defense. Now from Friday Night until Sunday at 4:30 PM each coach is responsible for their work. Our defensive coordinator assigns responsibilities to his guys (HUDL cut ups, clips, grades, hit chart for run game... Pass routes/formations drawn, favorite routes). Over Friday Night into Sunday there are a lot of phone calls, text, emails. But everyone works at their own pace over the weekend. As long as they come in ready to roll Sunday we are good. This is usually the case 95% of the time. Some guys work at night, some guys work early in the AM.. others do it in the afternoon.. One coach watches film from 1:00 AM - 4:00 AM. Night owl.. I get emails and text from him at 3:00 in the AM often. Some guys have Saturday commitments, AM or PM or at night.. SOme guys have church Sunday.. BBQs...
I am a bottom line guy. As long as you come in at 4:30 PM with your work and responsibility done we are good. And that is something we have bought into as a staff. It works for us. We usually leave Sundays at 8:00 - 9:00 PM range.. On a few occasions a little later if needed. Not often. Our coaches are very, very good and reliable. Our DC has 10 years college coaching experience and has been with me for 4 years. He gets it. We have other coaches who are former head coaches or former coordinators. They get it too. We groom our young guys along and they eventually understand and learn our culture. This schedule has been very good to us. Over the last two years we have gone 10-3 and 11-2. Losing in the state semifinals on the last play of the game to the eventual state champ both years. For me the schedule is not as important as hiring and surrounding yourself with great people who love kids and love football. We all have that same trait.

So coaches who curse you would be and are ok if your son's high school football, baseball, LAX, basketball coach.... curses...
Sounds like we are in an agreement in that?
I think if you look at it from that perspective it could change how you think about it...

Here is a way to look at it.. I have a 5 year old son playing sports (Football, basketball and now T-Ball) and a 4 year old right after him...
Being a parent does change your perspective.
Now I am not comparing Varsity football to 5 year old T-Ball... BUT..
If my son was in high school and he said to me that his coach was dropping F-Bombs all the time in practice would I be ok with it? Would I have a problem with it as a parent? Not cursing at him and still cursing...
Being a parent kind of flips your perspective with regards to coaching... Stuff I did in my 20's are probably things I would not do today. I guess that could be said for most on this board.
Not to go on about this...
But any of us who are parents this might be a good way to measure our cussing in practice.
Thoughts?

We did it last year and some positives I like
1. Keeps practice moving and keeps kids upbeat. Like the energy.
2. Love it during team periods when the coaches are on the sidelines and we are trying to get in plays.. Very distracting and can be chaotic... Like Friday Night with the band playing and loud crowd. Love it coming in and coming out...
3. Like it because it forces us to coach in chaos.. Friday nights can be very chaotic and it forces us to simulate it in practice.

Each coach has a grade system they have for their positions as well... First thing we do Sunday when we meet as a staff is review personnel. Each position group reviews grades... Anything glaring is reviewed.. Usually plays off/loafs..
One thing we do in season is film 60-95 snaps each day in practice monday - wednesday... inside run, 7 on 7, team.... position coaches review that daily on HUDL on correct mistakes on HUDL daily... Anything glaring mistake wise is usually picked up before Friday.
But yes we have each position coach grade after the games and pass that along. First thing we do Sundays when we meet.

Last August we graded every varsity player during August. Go off of HUDL and grade kids off of inside drill/ 7 on 7 / team compete..
Staff meeting at 7:30 AM everyday in August.. Review personnel and grades.. Post grades in locker room and position coaches explained grades to them by their position coach.
Worked out real well. Players understood where they stood and there were not any surprises. Set the tone (Effort, hustly, loafs, no plays off). We really emphasize hustle, effort... Grade that the highest. Technique... Each position coach had a system he felt comfortable with and explained it to his group.
Liked it a lot will do it again this August. The players would run into the locker room and look for their grades. They really took pride in it.

More off season stuff...
Chopping wood for local communities / donating it to families that need it in the winter..
in our area we actually have a rather large rate of homeless people.. Our team pastor (Character Coach) has us lined up to serve at local soup kitchens on friday nights and help at local shelters.

Yep that is.
I also have a power point I share with parents too. Goes over NCAA Clearinghouse, recruiting cycles, offers, grades, sliding scale, core classes, when they offer, how they offer... Really good.
I am in Virginia and We have Jim Cavanaugh Virginia Tech Staff coming to our school in April to give a NCAA Clearinghouse seminar/workshop. Really looking forward to having him present this to our parents. He has over 40 years of college coaching experience with most recent being a recruiting coordinator at VA Tech.

Love your approach. That is our approach too..
1. Run the ball 2. Stop the run (YOU HAVE TO IN HIGH SCHOOL. HAVE TOO!!) 3. No turnovers 4. Create turnovers (we were +21 in turnover margin this year) 5. Create points off of defense (Scored 9 defensive TDs in 13 games)
We went to our state semifinal game this year for the 2nd straight year (We lost on a FG with 1.6 seconds.. Had lead whole game)
We started a sophomore QB mid season. Our offense went 31 quarters ALMOST 8 games without a turnover. That was huge for us 2nd half of the season. We had 9 turnovers in 13 games.

Look at Mondays national championship game...
Notre Dame and Alabama...What do you think of? Hard Nose run game and tough defense...
Look at last years Game -Alabama v LSU... Same thing
Year Before Auburn v Oregon - Both teams were tops in the nation that year in running the ball... You call them spread... But they ran the ball..
Not bashing Air Raid 5 wide spread.. But you are not finding those teams in that game.
Like Huey said.. Yeah you run but you also HAVE to throw too. But yes I believe physical football (Running the ball, Stopping the run, creating turnovers, not turning the ball over) will win you a lot more games. In todays game you can do it a lot of different ways..

Discipline stems from the head coach down.
Yes I do agree it is a lack of discipline and it starts with the head coach down. An occasional bad day happens... or two... But if this a trend in a program (If you are losing the +/- battle win turnovers) I do believe it stems from the head coach and what he accepts.

Agree...
This is a simple solution.
Our leaders voted not to have it. They did not want it to get in the way of them winning.
Create a pre-season policy. Make it apart of your team rules and have the players and parents sign it. When something happens you pull out the team rules and everything is documented and expectations are CLEAR from day one.
Our players have to turn in a copy of team rules every year before they get any equipment or practice. Have parents and players both sign it.
Pretty simple IMO... OUr season went through december and we did not have any twitter issues after we installed this in August.

IN august our Leadership Council voted and approved a team wide policy. We did not have ONE issue on twitter all year. Here it is
If you play in our program at ANY level. You are not allowed to mention ANYTHING with regards to our football team. Nothing. Winning, losing, issues.. anything. Can not say anything about our program or respond to anything from another team. We had two coaches monitor the public accounts (The captains did as well). You can not even say "good luck tonight against blah, blah, blah." Nothing...
First offense was runnning/suspension..
Second offense was dismissal.
Kids loved it and it worked for us.
Being apart of a football program is not a right. Our players have really bought into that concept.
I know some may not like it but it worked for us and we did not have any of those annoying distractions...

In today's day and age you must have a defense that can adapt to offenses. Here is what we face the first 6 games
1. Unbalance double Tight Wing 2. Pro/11 personnel zone 3. Navy Triple Option 4. Classic Wing T 5. Pro Style (Fullback/TE/A Back..) 6. 4/5 wide spread
We have a defense that matches to personnel. You go 10/11 personnel we take guys out and match with speed. Around here there are very, very , very fast teams. If a team comes in 22 personnel and runs power we bring in guys too...
Something our DC did this year was to match up our defense against every offense we see. Keep some core principles but we must be flexible.
Watch Alabama and other teams. They match personnel with personnel. We try and take a similar approach. We have 2 hybrid positions in our defense that give us a lot of flexibility....

Every Spring I hold two recruiting meetings for my parents.
First one in March is a general meeting for all of my parents. I have a very good ppt about recruiting and how the process works. I hit on Division I A- III.
From there I have another recruiting meeting night in May. That meeting consists of two sessions - Rising Seniors Rising JUniors
First meeting with the seniors I require them to bring their updated transcript and we review the possibilities. 99% of these kids are going D-II or D_III so we review what they need to do..financial aid, academic scholarships..
Rising juniors review with them their transcripts and what to do if they think they are a D-IA or IAA prospect. Go over that process with them.
I have very in depth ppts for each set as well.
It has worked well for us.

Agree... This is the reality we live in today... This is not 1989...Times have changed big time.
Facts are when the D-IA schools were visiting this spring (we had over 20 schools visity) They had either 1. Offered our kid already 2. Had made contact with me about an offer or were following up camp...etc...
If not - They were looking for 2014 recruits.. Many of these schools have already extended over 100 scholarship offers...
It is what it is.. You can argue and give an example here and there....But if your kid is practicing in MAY OF HIS JUNIOR YEAR WITHOUT AN OFFER... HE IS NOT D-IA!
That is reality...

I am not talking about the 2nd tier or 3rd tier guys... They are D-IA...
When Tech, UVA or WVU comes in and they invite these guys to junior days and invite they to camps in the summer they are legit guys. They are not their number 1 guy but they are on THEIR BOARD.. They have already had this conversation. When they come to your school they are checking on them and want to follow up.
I would bet that probably close to 80% or more of D-IA players ALREADY ARE CURRENTLY HOLDING AT LEAST ONE OFFER!! THIS IS REALITY.
I have a guy that has 7 offer so far. 3 D-IAA and four D-IA. Again they probably hold one or more now..
Usually the summer you will find your OL/DL gem. Guy that is huge 6'6"320 but has OK tape. Has the measuarbles and goes to a camp and get offers. Most DIA have their offers out...Many have offered between 50 - 150 players already. Depending on the school.
It is what it is... If you are 5'11" 185 lbs and run a 4.8 forty these schools DO NOT WANT YOU! You are a dime a dozen and you are everyehere...
How about the 6'2" 260 lbs OL that runs a 5.5... Think they want him.... Think again....

By the way if your kids are practicing in May without D-IA offers =THEY ARE NOT DIA..
Have had several D-IA schools come through in May already and tell me they have their slots filled for 2013 class. They are not even looking at 2013 currently. Many of them wanted 2014 players - sophomores..Virginia Tech, Virginia and West Virginia were all pretty much done and looking for 2014 recruits as of the past two weeks...
That is the reality we live in toda.
