How many of you guys use music at your practices. During what periods does the music come on? Have you seen a difference in your guys tempo with music and without music?

We did it last year for the first time. Sometimes we would turn it down during instructional periods. The kds really like and ave already asked if we can do it again next year.

We played it all the time last season. We'll probably use it less during install periods this season, but it tends to keep coaches from talking too much. If we need to stop and chat, we do that.

Good deal. Yea I think install is a gimme. I can see how it stops coaches n players from talking too much. We are a uptempo spread no huddle all signals so it won't bother us much. We don't do much coaching on the filed anyways we film our practices. How did you guys get the kids to understand that we are not we a party but to continue to focus?

I would love to see playlists or pandora stations. We bought a speaker to use but have not been able to find anything clean enough to use. I am terrible at choosing music. Need something that will not get old.

Need something that will not get old. We let our seniors make the playlist. Tell them it has to be clean or else! Kids take a lot of pride in it.

I like the idea but I think that most of these teams do it either to simulate noise control or to help with recruiting..not sure it would be an everyday thing for me

We did it last year and some positives I like
1. Keeps practice moving and keeps kids upbeat. Like the energy.
2. Love it during team periods when the coaches are on the sidelines and we are trying to get in plays.. Very distracting and can be chaotic... Like Friday Night with the band playing and loud crowd. Love it coming in and coming out...
3. Like it because it forces us to coach in chaos.. Friday nights can be very chaotic and it forces us to simulate it in practice.

We blast it in July-August. I got us a Bose portable speaker last summer...came with a remote (I control the volume ). Our kids loved it. About the only time we turned it off those first 5-6 weeks was when were doing Team Offense...other than that, I cranked it. Kids love it as well as most of the coaches. The ones that don't just won't admit it...might make them less of a harda$$ you know. lol

good deal thanks coaches. Yeah I think has its positives. Iv heard of schools doing it just haven't been at a practice and physically seen it. Took some of my offensive players to watch UCLA practice the other night and the loved it. we run a similar off as ucla and they got to see the tempo those kids practice at and yes they played music and I think it kept the tempo on a really high level through out practice... even special teams. So I think we will have the seniors choose the playlist. I have a best friend who is a local dj on a radio station so I am asking him to make one for us. and yes I can see how it can loosen up a few coaches as well. It may even loosen me up a bit LOL.

What size speaker do you use? We are going to play music this year but I am struggling as to how big of a speaker I need. Do you put it at the 50 or in one EZ? Thanks for your answers.

Coach, Will you run this off the battery only? Getting power to our practice field isn't practical so I'm wondering if this is the way to go.

yes. the battery should last up to 5 hours at full blast. I've heard this exact model before. My sister inlaw who is a cheer coach uses it for her cheer team. she rarely charges it. and its durable.

Amazon has some great options for portable PA systems that are battery powered and are extremely loud. I am going to run the music off my phone and also run our timer app at the same time.

did it in the spring during PE class, both weight room and when we went outside.... hated it. Yeah, I'm an old fogie/stodger/stick in the mud. Am I just being a pain in the arse, no. We've done it before to simulate crowd noise and I understand that, but for the 'tempo' or 'being up beat'..... meh.
So far as the weight room, it seemed to me (just anectdotal evidence) that the kids were more concerned with either booping to the music or fighting over what song was being played next. And yes the lyrics were atrocious. There didn't seem to be any extra 'energy' b/c we had music, that was determined by how the class was being lead by the adults. *Disclaimer* I have a sensitivity to loud noises and it just made we want to get the hades out of there, not coach my kids up. Again, the adults directing/leading the class made more of a difference to me than the music.
So far as the outside practice time, the ones in charge of the deciding to play the tunes just so happened to decide to do their individual on the other side of the field from the the source. So I was the one having to yell over the noise in my teaching time.
I get the idea that kids today are more plugged in than I was back before they invented color. I just think that the tempo was more affected by the leaders of of the class then simply playing some sweet tunes.

Funny during spring break one of my best friends, who is the DC at our arch rival, and I went to a Coastal Carolina spring practice. The played music during every period EXCEPT special teams. Idk why they didn't do it then but they did the rest of the time. We both agreed if we tried to do that at our places we wouldn't get any practice done for the dance party going on.

I deleted some of your post to more accurately convey my feelings, but you were pretty spot on in your thoughts. Just because someone else does it doesn't mean you have to do it. I'm sure as HELL not going to spend a few thousand dollars just so kids can have more time listening to music. God forbid they have to endure the torture that is silence and actually having to, I don't know, listen or pay attention to something.

We used it. I don't know why the HC did (it's a playoff thing mainly), but it keeps things up beat and moving forward. I would use it for that reason alone. Certain song comes on and you can get everyone a little more pumped up too.

We've had music at our 2 a day practices for the past 6 years. Kids and coaches like it. Keeps things going when 2 a days start to grind.

A few years ago I decided to do something different with the weight room music. I hated playing the radio station and seeing the kids break out into a dance when a particular song came on. Or, even worse, act like they were singing the love song to their girl. Letting them play their iPod is not an option either because of the language. Music can be a powerful part of creating the right intensity level in a workout (as you say coaches are more important). So I created a playlist, alternating rock/rap, of clean versions of songs that I knew that were about kicking someone's a&@ or breaking stuff. A mix that included new stuff and a little older stuff. It was very effective and had a positive impact on our workouts. I eventually made two playlists that we alternated and put them on random/repeat so that it always seemed a little different. This year, at a different school, I downloaded free "beats," legally, and laid motivational speeches over them. It has been great! I have enough of these now that we can use them 3 days a week and have some variety. Thes have been huge for us, especailly considering I have limited help in the weight room, this helps create intensity/attitude. Examples: T.G.I.M. and Harder to Surrender and Work to Win and Ray Lewis and The Champ is Here

In other words, they have to adhere to our "15 push-up" rule for swearing for every lyric that violates the rule. Our kids now bring in edited versions of all the songs they want played.

I found that even if it is edited, if it is a favorite "party" song or "love" song it kills our workout and I can only imagine practice. I am considering music at practice, but this is what worries me.

This is something that I am trying to talk my head coach into doing. He seems on board but like the rest of you I am a bit perplexed on how to do the music. I wish Pandora had some way to make sure the stuff was clean. But that doesn't seem like a real option.
I am leaning on perhaps having the seniors each pick out two songs and then we will download the clean versions of them and the coaches would pick out the rest. I think it would be a fair mix and allow everyone to make sure they were happy. I am just hoping for the intensity that this should bring.
does anyone else have systems they are looking at. I like both that are on here, just wondering if there are more/better/cheaper (if needed) options. Thanks

I am considering music at practice, but this is what worries me. being that this is my first year there I am noticing that the discipline wasn't really there. I have noticed a few kids say the N word at practice and so on. Im not the HC (OC) however I feel this is the HC job to correct. I have done so thus far and offered a punishment what I call "see me after practice". I will implement this same system for the music and language. It has worked so far. I hear less and less each day. even in the weight room. my HC and I talked about it and we will only play it during team periods, or any competition periods. it seems like once the music comes on kids and adults get a lil pep in their step. most kids listen to music while they run/workout on their own anyways. give it a shot, set boundaries and go from there.

I set it up on my sons iphone. not sure how it looks on ipod but I would imagine its the same. go to settings at the bottom, then account, then switch "allow explicit content" to off. we will have our seniors create a playlist with mainstream alternative rock, hiphop, and rap. we are also going to had crowd noise and band generic band music (we have a good and loud band). this is the system we decided to go with. just ordered yesterday on amazon. I love the TGIM Eric Thomas. I had my offensive kids watch the tgim when he was at U of Oregon and they got hyped and ready to practice.
