Just watched the Mississippi 6A game. South Panola 56 Oak Grove 14, in a snowstorm, inch of snow on the ground players sliding everywherre. South Panola just flat out thumped them.

I think Bobby Bowden is one of the best ever. On a personal note I had a player about 7 years ago who was barely a D3 player but was having all kinds of self esteem issues and just having a really hard time being a teenager. His favorite team was Florida State, I figured I would write a letter to UMD, Penn St, and Florida State addressed directly to Paterno, Friedgen, and Bowden. Ill never know for sure if the letter actually got to the HC but from MD and PSU I got back a form letter quoting NCAA policy and how they were sorry they could not help. I was just asking for some words of encouragement. I recieved a package in the mail a few weeks later with an 8x10 photo of Bowden autographed personally to the player with some words of enocuragement. I will never forget that and always say that is the reason they were as good as they were at their peak. He just knows how to relate to people and deal with people.

I agree with make the big time where you are but in some areas (especially mine). Athletics takes a backseat or even a back back seat to everythign else. BY no means do I think it is more important then academics but they just plain dont care about it here and would rather make parents happy then build a program. 2-8 with no complaints or 8-2 with complaints, they would gladly pick the 2-8. Im not talking about legit complaints Im talking about Jonny isnt playing, why did coach call that, etc.... I also know and expect these complaints to always come but here the administration will actually sit a HC down and take the parents side.

Coaches,
At a point where I am pretty fed up with the area that i am in now (Maryland) Not sure if it is the county I am in or the whole state and this region for that matter. My question is where do you think/know is the best area in the country to coach HS football. I dont mean where is the most successful programs although they may coincidentally be there also. But where is the best community support, place to coach, commitment, all of the above. Im thinking the smaller the town/area the better but not sure I am correct. i have only coached in Maryland in one county so Im all years. I am at a point where I am ready to move on and can pick up and move clear across the country for a new start if I think it would be a good situation.

Guys
I am flying into Jackson on Friday to watch the 6A state title game on Friday night. Coach Wilkerson is the OC at South Panola, he has talked at a lot of Galzier Clinics. I am staying in Jackson and wondering any good spots to go especially Saturday to watch the College Championship games or good places to eat in general. Any help would be great
Thanks

Coaches,
I am looking to develop and put on paper a recipe for how to start, run, and administer a football program from Day 1. I am trying to create almost a checklist of these are the things that need to happen in order to give yourself a chance at being successful. Here is what I have come up with so far, of course I will be expanding upon each section but these would just be the headings. Feel free to add more headings or fill in underneath each heading as to help me expand upon the heading. Thanks in advance!
1. Administrative Support 2. Coaching Staff 3. Equipment (Field/Player/Technlogy) 4. Off Season 5. In Season 6. Fundraising 7. Player Expectations 8. Camps/Tournaments 9. Parent Involvement/Role 10. Facilities 11.

Heck yea that was our whole tag system this year. we were shotgun no huddle wristband so if we wanted to tweak somethign week to week we did with a verbal cue. For example Clemson was our curl flat, if we tag it with Tiger the flat turned to a wheel and if we tagged it with Bengal the curl turned to a curl and go(skinny post_. Also out of trips any route we tagged with "meatloaf" told #2 and #3 to run the combo and #1 to run the alt route. Is this what you were looiing for? We had a ton that we made up I tried to make them as crazy and as transferrable as possible so the kids would undertand it. I found that the funiier and more crazy it was then easier they remebered it.

Coach I guess what I am asking for is do you have a template for this if you were interviewing for a job blidly tomoorow, what would you say your ogiing to do if you only knew the program had been horrible? I know this may not be too realistic but a lot of jobs around here that open are because of lack of support from admin so what would you say if you knew going in you werent gonna get support if push came to shove? I wanna hear somethign other than dont take the job.

Coach do you have a plan that you follow now that you have done it at 2 schools? Care to share from start to finsih what was done? I have had one HC job and gave it up for awful admin support I was young and they thougth they could manipulate things. I assume if I get another shot it will be at a program needing a turnaround. Any insight would be great.

Coach,
I dont know abou tyou but where I am we cannot make off-season stuff part of team selection. We are going to use a point system this year and it is to reward all of the good thigns happening with our kids, as well as create some competition with having monthly prizes for the top point earners (team and individual). I am an assistant coach and have been HC before. If I ever take another head job it will be on the understanding that the entire athletic department subscribes to a lifitng program for inseason and out of season, this way the kids will always be lifting, in season lifts wont get them as strong as off season but it will be better than nothing. I know that is wishful thinking on my part especially for the area I am in but it sounds like you have your AD on board see if he will buy into a department wide lifting program and schedule.

Guys I know there is a ton of point systems out there. Can you outline yours that you use? My only concerns are do you cut based on points or just dont play a kid? I know administration around here does not want team selection based on off season participation. HOw do you get rid of the non earner? In some cases I could see a kid who is a cancer just sticking around just to be an ass.

Hey guys I am looking for places that sell scaffolding or a filming tower that we can use to film our different segemnts of practice. I am drawing a blank on where I have seen them before. Also might entertain making one if I get a good recepie. I am only looking for something that puts the filmer 10-15 feet in the air on a sturdy platform.
Thanks

Saw some very large hula hoops being used for pass rush drills as well as some RB and WR stuff. I checked Gilman gear they dont have any. Anyone know where I can buy a large hula hoop? Or how I can make it out of something other than garden hose? I want something that is hard ans keeps the circle shape.

wingtol very well said, I think in my situation he may have picked up the phrase " 2 platoon" at a clinic or from a buddy who does it and now hes on it but every time he talks about it we end up mentioning 5-6 kids that will be 2 way players. Thanks for lettign me vent some!

Guys
We all have those kids that are good enough to if not start both ways but play both ways. How do you get them repped up to be the #2 RB and #1 LB?
Also I am thinking in order to run 2 platoon in the spread O I need 17 players. 11 starters, 2 extra OL, 1 extra slot, 1 extra split, 1 extra rb, 1 extra QB.
Trying to convince my HC that it is not as easy as he thinks esp with us only having 30-35 kids of which 15-20 are good enough to start.
He would rather have the 5 best LB (talent wise) start instead of the 1 best LB start becasue he is also the first best RB. By 5th best I mean there is a huge drop off from #1 to #2 in some positions.

Opponent just backed out. We are a 3A school in central MD Spread O and Multimple D 3-3 and 4-4. 3-7 last season but have a strong senior class. In desperate need of a game like scrimmage the week of 8/29 we can host it or come to your place. JV and Varsity preffered. Would like to play someone with a lot of speed.

I think the do not pay volunteer coaches is more of a thing to avoid using fundraising money to pay them with. Meaning you have your kids raising funds to pay coaches. But get an outside bank account, create a camp name LLC and hire anyone you want to work the camp. As camp director you can pay them whatever you want.
Other ideas are getting coaches to work combines or other college camps, it doesnt pay much but it puts some money in thier pockets.

Mav
We do not have spring ball here so the kids get a lot of benefit from going I think. My only stink with it is sometimes the host schools arent the most organized and makes for a pain in the butt experience. All in all though the kids really benefit from it especially without having spring ball. No pads though for our NFL HSPD

In my school I am part of the PE department and we have a super small weight room and have a combination of both, racks and machines. In my county's curriculum we cannot teach most of the olympic lifts but clearly there is a need for them in athletics. We just try and balance as best as we can. I tried to get a lot of the machines moved out for more platforms and racks but the head of my department is a woman and will never go along with a change for "sports" only it has to benefit the students also.

Guys,
I am considering starting to explore other options as far as coaching goes in the future. I have a friend in Texas who can get me a job coaching which would come with a teaching job I assume. I also want to explore coaching at a D-3 school and working my way up that way. Basically I have 2 concerns. 1. I have never taught in another district so I am wondering if I would be scrweing myself (years in wise) by say picking up and moving to another state for a coaching and teaching job?
2. Also if i were to get a college job as an assitant at the D-3 level I am pretty sure that nixes teaching still at the highschool level. I am concerend if I made the jump that I would be 65 yrs old and nothing really set aside for retirement from jumping from job to job as we know the college coaching world can lead to.
I am eager to explore other options but I want to go about it the safest way possible, if that makes sense.
Just looking for any advice on anythign related to this, making the jump from teaching public school and coaching at the school to trying to get a college job, and also picking up and moving to another state for a coachign/teachign opportunity.
Any advice or expeirences would be great.
Thanks!
