ok so our district decides last week to cut all funding for sports. Everyone is trying to fight it and all that. This big tax might pass in June that could save it but even if we dont save it we can have football but we just have to fundraise for our transportation. So all of our usual fundraisers will go towards transportation.
the big problem for myself and the other coaches is we wont get any money. Now i know we dont coach for the money cuz it is so little compared to what we put in but the lil extra right before christmas is nice to have. So i am trying to come up with ways where we can raise money for us
I would like to hold a youth camp at our school in which we coach the local youth teams for a day, take thme through some drills etc. but i am looking for anything else we can do to raise money for us. Just so you know our booster club is just about non existant...

When they cut 3 of our coaches here recently, the head coaches all got letters that said anyone paying Volunteer coaches would be FIRED. Point Blank, don't do it or you are gone. I believe had I been the HC I may have tendered my own resignation that day. Not that the Administration would have cared. Tehy would have brought in some other puppet.

Sounds kind of harsh by the HC, is that his way of trying to stick it to the administration?

Can't coach for free, if your a professional you should be paid for your services.

I once wanted to raise money for my assistants and was also told by admin that it wasnt legal (due to taxes and what not). I really do not know. Why not just put on a coaching clinic and see if you can raise the money.

I think the do not pay volunteer coaches is more of a thing to avoid using fundraising money to pay them with. Meaning you have your kids raising funds to pay coaches. But get an outside bank account, create a camp name LLC and hire anyone you want to work the camp. As camp director you can pay them whatever you want.
Other ideas are getting coaches to work combines or other college camps, it doesnt pay much but it puts some money in thier pockets.

How stringent are the fundraising rules in your state? Can players take part in fundraising activities that are intended to raise coaching salaraies?
If so, put them to work. Car Washes, Donation Letter Drive, Community Discount Card Sales, Lift-a-thons, Work Crews for Hire.
We raise four stipends yearly for our "volunteer" coaches as we have seven stipends that go to the other guys. We have a youth camp and a summer team camp that pretty much takes care of my four guys.
What is your goal amount?
We (just our coaching staff) raise over $10,000 and we spend very little time in doing this.

Take a look at your Booster Club's charter (or rules) and see if there is anything in there prohibiting the paying of coaches. If not, it may be time for you to appoint a new booster club president who will work with you to achieve your goals. If that's not possible in your area, try starting an alumni giving fund similar to the direct mail fundraiser mentioned on another thread. Good Luck!

Out here: Things get taken care of........ Seriously, after reading this thread, the losing athletics thread, the NC football participation thread, the taking a test to coach thread, etc. I am glad to be at my small school in Indiana.....where the men are men and the sheep are scared.

The stipends in our 5-school district were cut in 1/2, not totally. We've done the pool all the money that the paid coaches get and divide by total number of coaches. This year that will net me about $250 for the season.
The AD reminded the coaches of all the sports, via e-mail, that fundraising to pay for coaches is not permitted. It seems to me that camps would be about the only mechanism to do that. I've heard that some schools in our general area charge $200+ for summer weight training as a fund raising mechanism.
I've been told that the transportation fees are close to $500 per bus per game for school district buses, $600 for charters. Even at that price it's about $2k just for our 4 away games (we play our league games at a common stadium with 5 other teams).
Plus, it seems that the program is now 9k in debt from the last 2 seasons of a new head coach.
We haven't gotten any funds from the district except for safety (helmets and shoulder pads) so we've always done our own fundraising. Our boosters are for the school, not football, so funds they raise go to all the sports.
I think it's going to be a hard year for a lot of schools/teams.

But you take a backseat to basketball. Basketball may be huge in Indiana, but I don't think football is as far behind as many think. Hell, in those 50 states in 50 days that ESPN did, my college's football specific rivalry (Wabash/DePauw) was voted the number one rivalry in the state. Over IU/PU BBall, ND/PU football, and others. That's two D-III schools in football beating a major BBall rivalry, as well as a D-I football rivalry. But BBall is number one, no denying that. I don't think the gap is that huge though.

I think camps or a youth Flag football league is your best bet. Find out what kids are not getting football and go for it. It can be a big money maker.
