Has anyone attended one of the NFL's High School Player Development Camps. They're a week long, completely FREE camp. Almost sounds too good, but I've talked to a couple of local coaches who were happy with it last summer. Any insite is appeciated. www.nflyouthpd.com/hspd/index.html

Mav
We do not have spring ball here so the kids get a lot of benefit from going I think. My only stink with it is sometimes the host schools arent the most organized and makes for a pain in the butt experience. All in all though the kids really benefit from it especially without having spring ball. No pads though for our NFL HSPD

They don't update the website very often and it seems to move every year.

Hey Mav,
I have worked at an HSPD camp for the past 4 seasons. I believe that it has been a benefit for our athletes. They get coached by other HS coaches at their position. It brings them together, and we used alot as a big team building event. This pretty much got us ready for the summer.

The past 3 yrs we took our kids to the JrPD camp and it was well worth it. The JrPD camps I heard got axed this year due to money. Kids got good number of reps, chance to go against some other kids, some free stuff and some extra attention.

We sent 10 kids (no spring ball). NFLPD camp was solid. College and high coaches work it for free and the focus was on technique, we will be back this spring.

Thanks for the info guys. In this economy, having the NFL foot the bill for a camp seems like a no-brainer. Having the camp in early summer is also ideal for us.
If anyone else has had any experiences with this camp please let me know.
Thanks again.

I looked at the web page but did not see anything about registering a player for the camp. How do you get someone signed up for this?

I coached at a JPD 2 years ago and a HSPD last year. The JPD was for middle school aged kids and the NFL provided equipment for the players to borrow. The practices were scripted by the NFL and the players practiced at every position and learn the fundamentals of the game with some character education built in.
The HSPD was geared towards college prep and the players had to sit through some sessions on becoming organized as a student/athlete and preparing themselves for college. HSPD was helmets and shoulder pads and again the practices were scripted by the NFL with drills and activities. Each practice ended with some type of competition.
They were both very well run and the coach that was able to secure the program did a great job. The coaches get a stipend, and some coaching apparel, but the host/organizer might get a bigger payment.

I sent off an email yesterday to see if they would add a site in Maine. I'll let people know if we get a response.

If they don't get back to you quickly, let me know and I can get you his direct contact info. btw - looks like they ran the camp in Wells ME and a couple over in NH last year.

Thanks Mav! The Wells, ME camp is the school next door to us. I heard it was a great success. It seems like a no brainer to try to host a camp with as much upside as this has - and that it is free for the kids.

We actually run the HSPD in our area of MD... But because of the association that runs sports in MD, we are forbidden to using equipment. I always enjoy coaching it because you get to work with other kids from other schools. The things they want you to use or coach do not always fit with everything everyone does defensively or offensively but for the most part they benefit the kids. Also, its great evaluation for your team as well as for other teams. We make a lot of decisions based on what we see at HSPD.
Now, because of money, the NFL is no longer doing JrPD camps in state. That is going to hurt our youth program.

There is a reg form that we had to mail/fax in for each one of our kids. If you contact any of the programs they should have one and yo just make copies.
