Hey, I need a little help here if anyone has a moment or similar situation they'd like to share. I'm the HC at a small school (<1000) and between the sports we share several athletes. 90%of out football players are 2 sport athletes with 80% of them being 3 sport athletes. We even have 6 guys who are 4 sport athletes during a single school year. So all these coaches are sharing athletes and it makes for a very difficult situation when it comes to having a consistent off-season program. The past 2 years we have taken attendance in our winter program, as well as our summer program. If you were in a sport you were counted as being in the winter program. The summer however, you had to make 80% of your days. Well, this past summer, we had some overlaps with basketball etc. that made things dicy, esp. since the AD is the BBall coach! Anyhow, he has gotten with me and wants to put together a point system to track our athletes commitment. I thought what better place to look than on here right?! Anyhow, if you have any ideas, that would be great as we have a very athletic freshman class coming in, and they will be involved in all kinds of sports as well as summer baseball and basketball. I know it's not the best thing in the world, but it's what we have to do here in order to have athletes you have to be willing to share them!

Coach,
I dont know abou tyou but where I am we cannot make off-season stuff part of team selection. We are going to use a point system this year and it is to reward all of the good thigns happening with our kids, as well as create some competition with having monthly prizes for the top point earners (team and individual). I am an assistant coach and have been HC before. If I ever take another head job it will be on the understanding that the entire athletic department subscribes to a lifitng program for inseason and out of season, this way the kids will always be lifting, in season lifts wont get them as strong as off season but it will be better than nothing. I know that is wishful thinking on my part especially for the area I am in but it sounds like you have your AD on board see if he will buy into a department wide lifting program and schedule.

I use a point system called Eagle Challenge. I have a draft night and have the players put 6 different teams. Seniors are the leaders of the teams. Each teams has their own colors and team name. I have t-shirts made up for them. They earn points for different things including grades and attending work-out. I run it through the summer. They reall enjoy it. I have jersy's made up for the first round picks in the draft

I have jersy's made up for the first round picks in the draft We are doing something very similar to this. This will be the first year we are trying it. Selecting 8 captains (2 per team/4 teams total) and they are drafting from EVERYONE in the school. Hopefully they will select a few of the great athletes who do not play football and they will begin pressuring them to come join the weight room and see what all the fuss is about. There are 4 coaches who are in the weight room so they will each draft 1 coach to represent them as well. At the end of the Winter Sports Season we will tally up points and award prizes Points are earned on attendance, max increases, running time decreases, liftathon money raising, etc... We're in week 2 and the kids LOVE IT. anything to get them going. WE're in the process of getting team tshirts made right now TEAM ATTITUDE TEAM DISCIPLINE TEAM EXCELLANCE TEAM COMMITMENT

We did this as well and called it our summer challenge, however, I'm looking for something year long. The reason being is we have several kids who are migrant farmworkers, and leave for part of the summer and go to various places to work and provide for their families. Some of these kids do it to afford their football gear (cleats, girdle etc.). We also have several multi-sport athletes that I don't want to leave out or punish becuase they are in a sport.

we use a point system, we have 130 boys in the school at the moment.
I have points recorded for 18 kids this month.
I do award points for participation in other sports because at least they are staying in shape, making friends and competing which is becoming something of a lost art.
The point system can be (was, not any more) met with resistance by the cancer types but the real high character coachable type kids embrace it.
I keep it simple and its still a work in progress. point earners earn more playing time, captain status, choice of gear, material things like pride wear etc. they also compete for a trophy.
the top guys monthly earn food, gear etc. 100 points gets a tee shirt, 200 a hat, 300 a sweat shirt etc.
I was considering setting 1200 points as the "retired jersey" mark where a kid gets to keep his jersey and wed retire that number. kinda of a cool idea.
