How do you think the football staffs at Columbia and Yale are going to handle recruiting with all this protesting? Is it a situation where you can just say focus on BALL? I think it’s important to realize that highschoolers considering those schools for the most part are not going to just”Focus on Ball”. a problem that we would have is a kid gets accepted to play, never shows up and decides it's not for him there is not a scholarship to take away

I coached at Yale many years ago. First off, most of these kids have plenty of choices. Second, the parents are very involved. Third, the aid packages each student gets are very similar. If you have choices, why go to a place that has all that nonsense. brophy I assume you are joking about your Jewish athlete comment but if not it's not a Jewish problem it is a society problem. Just my 2 cents

thank you for the eulogies! But not to put a damper but there are some known issues and I am working with a developer (who has been slow) to fix it up and modernize it, and also hopefully be there for more posts. I was hoping it would have been done earlier in 2024 but hope is it will be updated in the coming weeks/months, and then would work long term. But the old site was so old and barely worked with browsers and had some hacker issues. (I may even write a bit -- and recruit some other writers -- so fingers crossed!) good to hear I remember your early years on here asking stuff, fun times The Good Ole Days before Twitter

yes this is one of the things that is better Excel blows the doors off both of them though. So much more you can do and nowhere near as jumbled up and hard to understand as New Hudl. yes, I like to use excel too. I used print out my reports and physically count how many traps, tosses etc. I felt like I knew the info better

I think the new Hudl is way better. I got sick of having to make reports on old Hudl and if I added a playlist or changed data, I had to delete the old report and make a new one. Then repeat this every time we got a new game or something. With new Hudl, it saves so much time. yes this is one of the things that is better

We are looking at different ways to have players "earn it." For example, we are looking at putting white stripes (we have black helmets) on each players helmet and they are removed once a player demonstrates great attendance, work ethic, etc...This is similar to what Ohio State used to do. What does your program do, if anything? I am looking at something to push players to "earn it" on a weekly basis too and create more competition. what happens if a player doesn't do enough to get his stripe removed

We did separate days with a short period of the other side. It would probably be ideal to do both each day but in my experience since the HC typically handles offense defense can get short-changed. we mostly did the same. One day was offense with offense indy and then like 20 min of def team then the nest day then opposite thursday was 50/50

I never felt that "grading" game film helped very much. They're our kids, they're all we've got. Can't trade them or pick up somebody else on the "waiver wire" like in NFL. Plus it's very subjective. If somebody is not getting it done, is the backup going to do it better? If so, you made a bad decision on who should be playing to begin with. That's the kind of the thing you do in college coaching to justify the money you make. 100% That being said, I take notes on each player and position group

I'll probably get bashed but fundamentals aren't as important as assignment. Spend more time on who and not on how.

For O.Line, use a count system. The Center blocks #0, and everyone on the play-side counts from the Center's block to find their counterpart i.e., #1...#2 #3 etc. At the very least you get everyone going in the correct direction. Now, depending on the called play, the Center will be assigned to block Over on certain plays...Right...or left on others. Whomever he calls out is #0. You can add in a rule that tells the O.Linrmen that when they count, and the guy they counted to is a Linebacker...he should pull toward the play. Years ago I did that when coaching Pop Warner...and it worked. I've always had success w a count system

I see that he is a senior. It is unlikely that he will get a D1 offer as they are mostly filled and keep a few spots open for the portal

Has anyone at the HS level recruited your halls to find a few folks who are interested in the coaching side of football, and created a GA-type position for them (in this case a "Student Assistant" rather than a Graduate Assistant)? EDIT NOTE: As several mentioned in here, they would need to be limited to background tasks, would need to be limited to things like Coach.A mentioned: "-Breaking down film - Stats - Making scout cards - Helping set up & put away equipment" there was a coach on here that actually had a HUDL class at their school

I think it depends on what each individual coach teaches. and then you have to teach your kids what you mean by each coaching point.

Agreed. I have coached plenty on both sides of the ball. IMO, coaching defense is harder Saturday-Thursday. Coaching offense is harder on Friday. why do you think coaching offense is harder on Friday? It seems to me the offense knows the play and what to look for before the play begins

Something else to keep in mind - in the NFL, coaches are much more like partners in a collaborative effort with the players than than lower levels. It's hard to imagine that is the situation in New England

Gassers, half-gassers, or any variation. I know I am over-simplifying, but nothing screams "football shape" like running over 200 yards at a time. And then coaches wonder why there are so many shin splints and soft tissue injuries. I was an OLine and in great shape but I could not run those dang gassers

I have a friend who may be taking over a program that has 25-30 kids 9-12. 155 kids in the school total. Private school that has room for growth. He was told the previous HC did not emphasize academics or discipline. For those of you who have been in this situation, how did you find success? I know myself, the years I coached at a school this small we went 2-8, 3-8, 2-8, 1-9 and it was always a battle but I was a young kid back then. What would you do to grow numbers and find success? thanks in advance for any answers he might want to contact Kevin Swift . He was a successful coach of a small school in Oregon Gold Beach Twitter @kdawgswift
