We are looking at different ways to have players "earn it." For example, we are looking at putting white stripes (we have black helmets) on each players helmet and they are removed once a player demonstrates great attendance, work ethic, etc...This is similar to what Ohio State used to do. What does your program do, if anything? I am looking at something to push players to "earn it" on a weekly basis too and create more competition.

We have point system where players earn points in the offseason. They can earn points through their grades, playing another sport, community service, not getting in trouble in school, and by coming to workouts. The workouts are the most emphasized. They are reuired to attend at least 70%, and will have points deducted for failing to reach that number. Each returning player is required to earn at least 50 points. Those that earn 100 points become members of the "Century Club," and get certain privileges. They get things like a helmet sticker, special locker tags, tee shirts, lanyards and first choice of numbers and game pants. But, the privilege they enjoy the most is they get to be first in line at all meals.

We do something similar to the post above. Instead of punishing kids for things that you can not make "mandatory" during the off season. I would rather reward them for doing the things they should be doing. Like stated above, we give points for the wt room (improvements, top 5 etc), grades, community service, playing other sports etc... In return, if they earn the number of points required they get to pick their number 1st, get a T shirt with their name and number on it, get to pick their locker first, first choice of equipment, name on the back of their jersey, and 1st in pregame meal lines. Also, our captains can only be picked from those who earn enough points, regardless of class in school.

Not a great look to have a bunch of non striped helmets on the sidelines and a bunch of striped on the field....

We gave out helmet stickers but they were all for stuff in the off season. Also, Frosh team got a stripe on their helmets, JV had stripes and number decals on the side, Varsity had stripe, number decals, and helmet stickers.

Many moons ago, a buddy of mine had his own (not the HC) reward system like this. We had navy blue helmets with a yellow/gold letter logo..... simple, classic.
My buddy was the DC. He created a reward/stripe system for his 'Lawyers' --- those that 'laid down the law'. This could be a big hit, being a tackling machine, being a hard nosed eater of double teams, etc...... It wasn't anything that could be statically counted necessairly, just your simple construct of 'being a football player'.
He started with his own nomination process but it evolved into letting the players themselves nominate others into the club.
Basically if you had a 'really good game' you would get nominated for consideration. If you followed up that good game with another good game then the members would vote on whether to let you in, then you could get elected into the club or they club would place their expectation for getting elected -- number of tackles/sacks/big wow hits/etc.... Your reward was getting a stripe down the middle of your helmet.
From there it evolved. First you were a Lawyer = one 1/4 inch piece of yellow/gold tape down the middle of your helmet. If you progressed/kept 'laying the law' you could get more stripes for being a Judge 2 1/8 stripes on each side of the middle stripe. The next step was Chief Justice, and then Supreme Court Judge and stripes to go with it.
I thought it was a unique motivational tool, because the kids talked about it all the time both defensive and offensive guys. It wan't just for defense, it was just this one coaches way of making the program and the game of football special. We had a QB get his stripe when he passed for 480+ yards in a game (this was a BIG deal back 25 years ago) and another for being a 'nasty' OL.

Effort Jerseys Daily #1 Thing..
Currently in the off-season for lifting and other sports - still doing POTW..
We give away gatorade and snacks daily based on practice.
Our best rising 9th grader in attendance wins the hard hat award. He brings it to every game and places it on the sledgehammer pre-game. hardest worker.
Old School - we called the offense blackshirts - (they got blackshirts when they earned it by having no loafs in a game as long as they played at least 10 plays)
REWARD the behaviors you want without embarrassing the other kids.

A lot of good points in this discussion. We will have to re-evaluate and look at other ways. I agree, with Reward what the beavhiors we want without embarrassing other kids. The black stripe is a good idea, in theory.
