I've done this before as part of our off-season self scout offensively. Really did learn quite a bit in the process on how defenses were playing us, then promptly 1/2 of those teams ended up changing their defense for the next year, so.... This year I'm drawing it up again but I'm not probably putting quite as much detail before, I'm just drawing them on an 8 box. I will say that when I just take notes and draw things up like that learn a whole lot more about the opponent. This year I got so caught up in tagging stuff on film I never really felt like I knew "who" we were playing. morris I've thought about doing that as well. Just as an FYI instead of buying actual graph paper you can get "free" graph paper online. If you have access to a school printer you can just make a ton of copies of it instead.

If I've already got some of the breakdown done and don't have a whole lot going on that afternoon then I might. If I have a bit of breakdown work to already do or something going on I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For my OL, I grade each of the starters in 3 categories: Assignment, Technique, Finish. Assignment = Did you do your job? Technique = Self-explanatory. Usually look at footwork here Finish = Where are you at the whistle? Your hands need to be on a defender or you’re ACTIVELY pursuing a defender Each play will get a 0 (bad) or 1 (good). At the end, I’ll get a percentage for every category. Then avg. the percentages to get a total grade. Stole this scale from a COOL clinic and I love it: I also track knockdowns. I define a “knockdown” as any action that forced a defender to pick himself back up. Even if it looked like BS, I’ll reward it. I preach that if we make a defender pick himself up or play a full 7 seconds (average play time length), we’ll make them wave the white flag sooner or later. The player with the most knockdowns gets the “axe”. I just take a picture of them holding one of my axes, make them a little short highlight reel and give them a shoutout on social media. They LOVE it. Guys are constantly competing every week to win the axe and I love it. I think evaluations are key because they let kids know specifics of what they’re doing right/wrong. Especially for positions like OL, where detailed feedback is rare. Do I dread doing it every Saturday morning? Yes. But it’s so worth it. Players love looking at their grade sheets. We give them a running total also, and give them an average of their overall grade %’s, creating an “overall” rating like they see on Madden. Seeing “John Smith, RG, 89 OVR” is cool to this generation that was raised on Madden/2k/NCAA games. Here’s an example grade sheet: Coach, how long does it take you to grade all 5 players like this?

I’ve gone to watch a lot of playoff practices over the years and all I did was touch base with the HC and ask him if was ok. Just to see how another team does things. Did it with a local college as well.
As someone else said, I’m not sure I’d plan on being able to actually talk some ball with them afterwards or anything, lack of time. Every once in awhile that’ll happen real quick during water breaks or something but nothing major.
Those practice visits can set the stage for some good off-season meetings though.

Does anyone have a chart for taking a knee with fed rules? Would have come in handy last night (thankfully it wasn’t a determining factor).

Ok, can you explain that a little more? Sounds interesting. Here are the links to both apps: www.nohuddleremote.com/chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hudl-multi-screen/jmlffnpibekcbkhffhhjjdakbenjclckI like using the Multi Screen for data entry so I can watch film on my TV with the big picture but if I need to look down for data-entry, D&D, ODK or whatever the film is on my screen too. They run at the same time synced so I don't have to be constantly looking up and down to see the play. Coupled with the No Huddle App on my iphone I can do everything the Hudl remote except for the laser pointer and the "tag" button. Ok, I just downloaded both and will check it out! When you connect the film to you tv is it down via cord or wireless? Are you just doing a split screen deal on your computer window? Looking at the basics on the app it times up two tabs and sinks everything up, but I’m having a hard time picturing how it will get used. Seems like it could save a lot of time though!

I use the No Huddle App and it does the trick. Turns your phone into a Hudl remote and it's FREE. Highly recommend it. I also have a Hudl plug-in for Google Chrome that will sync up Hudl on two windows. I can have one window to watch film on my TV and one on my computer for data entry and they run the same time. Has saved some headaches for me this summer. Ok, can you explain that a little more? Sounds interesting.

My wife and I went their on our honeymoon and I’ll just echo a little of what has already been said.
We stayed at Ka’anapali
The waterfall you can stop at on the road to Hana was awesome. I have no idea what the place was called but I remember it was right by a fruit stand and you see a ton of cars so it’s really touchy to miss. There is a main waterfall that will be really crowded but I’d recommend going exploring a bit because you can find other that while are a little smaller there aren’t as many ppl there and you can swim in it basically alone which was really cool. Aside from our visit to Pearl Harbor that was the coolest thing we did.
We took a dinner cruise on a sailboat at sundown which was really cool, got to see some wildlife out in the ocean.
I’m not sure if it’s in the budget with taking the hole family but you can do about a 20m plane ride over to Oahu and see Pearl Harbor. I’m a history guy and I told my wife when we booked the trip that was the only thing I wanted to make sure we did. Really breathtaking!
Also, I’d echo the gentleman who said go to Costco and get food. We are breakfast one morning and it cost $70 for the both of us at the hotel. We made that mistake once and just ate pop tarts in the hotel after that.
Enjoy yourself!

Before our month of July hits (we have a few 7on7s, youth camps, and our team camp) we are about 2hrs a day 4 days a week.
That’s just lifting/running 3x a week and we used 1 of our contact days every Wednesday to have practice.

I have a good friends who made that decision this year, said it was one of the best things he's ever done. After hearing that there is part of me that has been wondering about the potential of doing that in the future. The last few seasons have really been draining on me and am wondering if a year away might be a good thing. That said I have no idea with what I'd do with myself. My free-time is usually spent doing something for football.

coachplaa and jgordon1 how long are these meetings lasting? We set up a shard Google Folder that our offensive staff works on during the weekend but the meeting idea sounds interesting because there are somethings that would be best discussed.

We watch anywhere from 4 to 6 plays. We watch inside run on Monday and more team on Tuesday. As the season progresses and we improve we will watch 8 to 10 plays. It depends on how much time we need to spend on each play. During the spring we watch indy film the first couple of days to improve our drill work. Thanks coach. Do you try and find a balance of showing good things and bad (or things that need to be improved) or just whatever you think needs to be watched?

Coach Vint in your 12-15m meeting how many clips will you watch? Are they all of Team/Group periods or will you show film of Indy?

Just read an article on Ohio State's camp practices without the doubles sessions where Kerry Combs (DBs & STs) said he really liked the new schedule because of its allotment for meeting time, which was the first thing to go during doubles.
That statement got me thinking of, how much meeting time is useful at the high school level, and how are ppl using it?
I can think of some advantages to meetings, particularly small group film review. We film as much as we can but the review time is generally just me grabbing a kid for a couple minutes with the iPad to show him.

Chris Clement When you had scout v scout on Day 3 what did your 1s do? On Day 4 what was the intensity of the team O period? Full pads, vs bags?

I generally start on Saturday after JV games are over but as a few others have said If we can get the first couple films traded on Thursday I may do the simple ODK stuff too. Thats always nice when that works out since it saves some of the mind numbing times on the weekend.

As a staff we haven't met the last two years.
I'm the OC and watch all the film on my own at home, running reports, making notes, etc. I'll type all of that up and send to HC. Generally we talk over the phone for about 1hr that night sometime but that's it. I handle all the scripts and such myself.
I know our defensive guys meet as a group (there are 3 of them, 2 O guys) early Sunday afternoon and do their thing.
This said we've basically been doing the same stuff for 6 years now.
