Hi all. So I've been out of coaching since 2016 and am ready to get back onto a staff next season and I would like to visit some of the local high school teams and the DII team near where I live to watch practice and maybe just talk ball with some of the coaching staff. My question is whether this is even appropriate to try and do during the season and how I should go about contacting them. I figured I'd just send emails to the HC but curious about what all I should put in it. Thanks.

Frankly, I talk enough about football all week I have no desire to do it much in my spare time

Just get a hold of the HC and ask. You probably shouldn't contact the DII team though during the season; they have enough going on at that level. During the off-season, every college coach I've asked has been willing to meet and talk ball.

I’ve gone to watch a lot of playoff practices over the years and all I did was touch base with the HC and ask him if was ok. Just to see how another team does things. Did it with a local college as well.
As someone else said, I’m not sure I’d plan on being able to actually talk some ball with them afterwards or anything, lack of time. Every once in awhile that’ll happen real quick during water breaks or something but nothing major.
Those practice visits can set the stage for some good off-season meetings though.

Find a HC and ask to sit in on the practice. Tell him you'll be in the stands. Don't film or take notes and don't walk around asking questions...not this year. He and his staff are busy.
Ask him if, come next Spring, you could hang around and try to get some knowledge. Offer him your phone number and see what happens. I'm betting it could be positive.
I think this is polite and respectful and I'd appreciate it if someone asked me like this.

We had a couple of guys come through last week who got out of coaching but like to stay close to the game. They watched most of practice and sat in on meetings. We didn't have much time to talk ball with them. Last year we visited a couple of local schools after we were knocked out of the playoffs. We watched practice to see what they are doing. Typically during the season guys won't have much time to talk. And some guys will not let you come by if they don't know you.

In season, they might not have as much time to talk as they do out of season or during spring practice periods.

Agree with what everyone else has said. Call and ask. Most coaches won’t have a problem with you watching. But they won’t have much time to talk during season. After the season is over though I’d bet most would accommodate you.
