This question is for all my fellow high school coaches. What would help your staff save time when preparing for an opponent? Things like film input/breakdown, scouting reports, etc. Most assistants (and some HC) are tied down with classes throughout the day (unless you're in Texas lol), and we are already pressed for time when it comes to preparing our kids for the upcoming game. So in a perfect world, what could help us save time/maximize our time to make sure our guys are ready for Friday night?

One thing that has helped me immensely is having one of our young assistants (not married/no kids) start tagging the all HUDL film the Thursday/ Friday of the week before we play an opponent. He enters ODK, down, distance, yard line hash, run/pass. The Saturday morning prior to playing the opponent, I fill in formation, strength, and play. His tagging allows me to get film tagged and get what I need to start game planning. I usually have a good idea what I want to do late Saturday night and have time for my ideas to "percolate" until we have our staff meeting on Sunday.

I'm a part of the Wednesday the week before group. Not completely, but we at least have them ODK'd, D&D, and usually play type and field position before Saturday prep. At least for in league games where we mandate early trades

The major break down is Saturday, but if we have a slow weak, will start ODK'ing and putting in the basic stuff sporadically

As this is my main responsibility on our staff, we accumulate a lot of film during the season, through the regular trafing process and by trading stuff to teams we don't play in order to get films of our other opponents. Typically, I will get started on the upcoming opponent on Wednesday evening. When we meet Saturday morning, depending on what we have on our opponent before we exchange via Hudl, I will have anywhere from 1 to 3 films already tagged and broken down. And being married without kids, I work on whatever we get on Saturday and Sunday evening.

We start tagging film Thursday night. By that time, we can't do much else for the next night's opponent, so I'll spend an hour or so getting ready for the next opponent.

Honestly, as soon as we get tapes, I start entering the data into hudl. Not that I'm looking ahead, I just know my Saturday and Sunday are already going to be filled to the brim with other things and that much less work will make it easier.

Also, they seem to say that if your film has a mistake (missed the beginning or something like that) that they will send it back. Does this happen often? Or will they pretty much always break down what they can? Thanks.

it always takes less than 24 hours...if you send it midweek usually 5-6 hours..obviously if you send it in at noon on saturday your going to have to wait but like I said always less than 24...all of our film has been taken and never returned..one time they made a few major mistakes..I sent it back to them and they fixed it and gave us a credit..there was one time they said they could do a few plays..it wasn't a big deal..if you can afford it ..i would definitely do it

I generally start on Saturday after JV games are over but as a few others have said If we can get the first couple films traded on Thursday I may do the simple ODK stuff too. Thats always nice when that works out since it saves some of the mind numbing times on the weekend.
