You guys are all forgetting about one major wild card team. The BMS Goats. Thad would eat every single one of these RBs up and offer them a cool, refreshing mojito afterwards. Lol

We do Escape from Baghdad and we do Hell's Ladder each once a week. Hell's Ladder is a brutal progession drill. Line up all your fat boys (OL & DL) on one side of the field on the hashes 5 yards apart and do the same for your smaller guys (WRs, DBs, QBs) on the opposite side of the field and put RBs, FBs, TEs, and LBs in the middle of the field. Give the guy at the front of the line the ball and he has to run over everyone in his way. His job is to get to the other end of the field without dropping the ball or getting run over by the defender. The defender does not wrap up but tries his best to run over the ball carrier. Each time you hit the ball carrier you move up 5 yards until everyone goes thru Hell's Ladder once. Every 20 yards send another guy with the ball. Trust me, your boys will be crawling off the field the first couple of times. But do it consistently and it toughen them up pretty quick.

We only get about 4 new pairs of cleats a year for our little stock room. The kids can buy their own if they want and the only stipulation we have is that they are either black, white, or green.

Sadly out jersey number pool is very limited. We only have 31 jerseys and helmet choice is all the same. If you can fit it you can wear it. Kids don't like accessories that much around our place. They've never really had much anyway so it doesn't matter to them. Our helmets are 4 years old and shoulder pads are probably 10-15 years old. Bought our unis 3 years ago. One pair of game pants and home/away jersey. I need an idea on how to use this incentive program when we don't have the gear or flashy things that could attract more kids to the program.

Sounds like a really good incentive program. Sadly tho we can't afford stuff like this or I would bring it up to our AD.

Been on both sides of the ball with this situation. Thankfully there is a 45 point mercy rule in 8 man around here to help keep these situations from happening. Our coaching staff firmly believe that no team should ever be humiliated like that. The thing I can't stand is when a coach keeps his 1s in even when we sub in 2s.
Thankfully the last few seasons we have been on the winning side of the ball. We try the best we can to not run up the score but if you won't let up neither will we. We will give you a chance to sub but if you keep up the heat don't come crying after the game is over. Once we at least get a firm lead we usually start slowly pulling 1s and subbing in the younger guys. We try to let everybody get some playing time and depending on how the opposing coach wants to play determines how much of a prick we are.
Case in point. We were playing a team this past season that was known to hammer down on teams they could 45 just because they could. Well halftime rolls around and we are up 34-0. Come out to start the 3rd and we start with 2s and 3s. They go down and score and kick an onside kick. they recover and go score. It is now 34-14. They kick an onside again and we recover it this time. So we go out with 2s and 3s still and they send in their 1s. Not that big of a deal to us. We understand that they want to see how their D will react after being down big. They bring the house 3 downs in a row and absolutely annihilate our scrubs. So 4th down we send in our 1s and punt. We go back out on D and apologize to the subs because 1s are going back in. 1s go in and shut them down. 1s go in on O and go score. So we keep in 1s and send them home by mercy rule before the 3rd quarter is even over. The HC of the other team was miffed and wouldn't even look us in the eye when we shook hands. We are switching classes next year but needless to say I hope we play that coach again to see if he learned his lesson.

This season we had a 4 hour trip and a 3 1/2 hour trip. Was not fun at all. Our shortest road trip was 1 hour. Going into a different class next season and our longest road trip will be a 1 1/2 hour trip.

I'm and OL/DL coach and I wear a visor during games, but during practice I wear the bucket hat. The reason being for the bucket hat is that I don't want the reverse racoon eyes from my shades. I also wear shorts the entire time. The only time my sweat pants come out is when it is below 50 after the season is over. Superstitions are hard to overcome lol

2006 - 2nd round of playoffs. Lose 26-20 to the eventual state champs. You can't win when you turn the ball over 6 times.
2007 - 2nd round of playoffs. Lose 28-27 to the eventual state champ again in double OT. The corner jumped offsides and blocked our extra point attempt.

Major kudos for keeping it together. I don't think I could have held it together like you did. Especially being sick like that.

Starting RB - Sprained shoulder week 4, torn ligaments week 8 Starting QB - Lost middle fingernail stiff arming a LB week 9 Starting RG - Dislocated pinky toe while pulling week 5 Starting C - Worst calf cramp I have ever seen in my life week 6. Seriously it was like a alien crawling under his leg where his calf was supposed to be. Bothered him until week 10 Starting LB - Torn ACL week 4. Played the whole season and didn't miss a game. Starting S - Sprained shoulder week 1. Went to see his cousin who is a chiropractor twice a week. Backup CB - Broken ribs week 4 durine practice. But he didn't know they were broke until week 6.

At times we as coaches forget that these kids we deal with every day are just that. Kids. Kids who have not fully developed mentally. The part of the brain that is associated with logic and reason and consequences does not fully develop until you are about 22-25. So let's not forget that these "idiots' are just like we were at one point in life.

One more thing I would add about how to be a better coach. For the love of God man don't be one of those screaming at the refs type of coaches. I have seen nothing but bad happen to those kind of coaches. I guarantee that if you treat the refs with respect and maybe shoot the breeze with them during some down time they will remember. Few weeks ago we showed up to a away game and I recognized the zebra crew from 3 yeas ago. One of them remembered me and it was like 2 old friends reuniting after being apart for 20 years. We had a few calls go our way that probably most likely shouldn't have and it was mostly in part to us not being up their butts the entire time and them remembering us. The same way coaches remember refs the refs remember coaches.

Had a kid a couple years ago miss practice do go to the hair dresser. Yeah… HAIR. DRESSER. And we have a new one a top the polls this week! Wow I got one for you. A few weeks ago during homecoming we had our star Nose Gaurd, who was also the district MVP last year, miss practice to go with his girlfriend to the hair salon so he could get his hair braided (Native American kid) to match his girlfriends. That was on Friday and Monday he missed practice to go dress shopping. Kids these days!

I wear a bucket hat during practice because I don't want the reverse racoon eyes. During games I break out the visor. Push the hair up so it looks crazy and get on with my happy self. I love the feeling I get when we send in our Heavy package and the other team's coach is screaming at the top of his lungs "it's coming up the middle". Then we run it up the middle and score or get a first down or 2 point conversion or whatever situation calls for our bull dozers.

I once saw an opposing teams coach wear a visor backwards and upside down. It was probably me. Lol. I wear my visor straight during the game but during warm ups, stretching, halftime my visor is however I feel like wearing it lol

It can be. I have seen more injuries occur in 8 man than in 11 man.

I am a young coach (age 25) and the greatest lesson I have learned is to be open to my superiors, take criticism with humility, have an idea when asked and be ready to voice it and back it up. Even if I am wrong my superior can tell me why it is wrong and correct me. If I am right and it helps the team then I get good praise from my superior. My best advice when speaking with other young coaches (21-29) is "Be Proud, Be Humble". Be proud of your coaching style. Take some pride in what you do. Stand up and fight for your style. Be humble when spoken to be a superior, He knows more than you, EXPERIENCE!

I always try to go to every game I can if we are not playing. It feels good to get out and see what other teams are doing. Some times the trip is not worth it but then other times I see some new little wrinkle that I really like or a new way to run a play etc...

We get out at 3:10. 3:10-3:35 - Team meal 3:35-4:50 - Movie (we've done Gridiron Gang, Lone Survivor, We Were Soldiers, etc.) 5:00-5:30 - Specialists warm up in our team shirts/shorts. Meanwhile, everyone else walks from goalpost to goalpost once to get their minds right (it's our superstition!). This is usually partnered with blaring music to really let the kids know gametime's coming. 5:30-6:00 - Chill out, get pads on 6:00-6:30 - Full pads warmups. Stretch lines, hitting drills, walk through plays. 6:30-6:40 - Chill some more sitting in our gym bleachers. Our locker room is pretty small so we can't just fit everyone in. We usually proceed with listening to loud a$$ music, even though we're right outside the opponents locker room. The subliminal message is that we could care less about how the other team feels (don't blast me for it, it's the HC's idea) 6:40-6:50 - Pre-game speech. Usually has a few swear words in it haha 6:55 - Run through banner as New Noise by Refused plays. None of that marching band $hit. 7:00 - Coin toss I wish I could experience it every Friday night This is song that plays as we come out to take the field. Seeing as how almost our whole school population is Native American we find it fitting. It also plays before every third down and after a big play.

Tendencies, big players, scheme, and things to look out for. Those are the only things I share with other coaches. I stay away from giving our game plan tho.

We let them go and open up film for whoever wants to watch film. We have tried to keep them at school and "get them in the right mind frame" but it blew up in our faces every time. We just have them be back at 5:30 for tape/dress up. 6 special teams. 6:15 QB/WRs. 6:35 team hits field for team stretch and warm ups. 7:20 coin toss and national anthem. 7:30 kickoff.

I would bring the kid in the office. Sit down with him and call momma. Tell momma what all you have observed. Then if he and she wants to stick to the hernia story I'd tell her that she needs to come get him ASAP and take him to the doctor because a hernia is no joke. Then go from there.

So yesterday it took us 2 hours for a 45 minute walk thru. The reason why? School meatloaf. Every 10 secondS we had someone running like a penguin to the bathroom. It was a sad stinky and funny evening. Lol

Most of the time when kids want stats it is because they are being fed all kinds of crap from family and friends. But at the same time desire to win vs selfish want of the ball is a very fine line.

Anybody know how many total plays there were in that game? That is what I'm wondering as well.
