What do you do? Best lineman, two way player, walks up during pregame meal and says his mama won't let him play because they think he is hurt. May have a hernia.
Said it's been hurting for several weeks. It didn't stop him from power cleaning 300 pounds thursday. But mama says...

Get his mama on the phone... Grant him his wish. Then arrange for your trainer to hold him out of practice for two weeks. If his mama backs the story he is screwed, if he hesitates for a second, he is screwed, if his mama backs the story, he is screwed. I had kid do that, after the game his dad was told why he was in street clothes, slapped his son across the face in front the entire world

I would bring the kid in the office. Sit down with him and call momma. Tell momma what all you have observed. Then if he and she wants to stick to the hernia story I'd tell her that she needs to come get him ASAP and take him to the doctor because a hernia is no joke. Then go from there.

id call the mother
1) if hes lying, and his mother knows nothing about it...well thats a pretty serious issue 2) if hes not lying, why didnt anyone tell me before hand (risking further injury!) 3) if his mother really does think that...then send him to the trainer for eval.
there is NO way a kid can power clean with a hernia.

He's getting examined first thing this morning. Best thing happened...played 2 freshmen at TE. They played great (for freshmen) and we won first game of the year with close to 300 yards rushing.

I would say if he isn't injured he will be back quick, but make him a backup

If he is injured he is out. If he lied to me, he is going to be out longer than injury.

This story strikes me as weird. Player says that his mama says he's hurt and can't play and the OP hasn't mentioned talking to either Mama or the trainer. That doesn't make sense to me.

I would tell him that I am his Mama now, and I say he can play.

"You got your brothers on the team and you got your daddy. Now, you know who your daddy is, don't you? Who's your daddy, Gary?"

A parent cannot excuse a player from practice or a game unless it is cleared with me well ahead of time. As such, I would tell the kid to show up on Monday with a doctor's note saying that he couldn't play/can't practice or it counts as unexcused and then we follow policy. First unexcused equals not starting the next game. Second unexcused equals no playing time in the next game. Third unexcused: kicked off of team.

Kid hasn't brought a doctors note yet...hasn't dressed since. I think he actually would rather be a manager.
