I am old school and it drives me crazy when I see kids wearing flashy/distracting football cleats. Teams that wear the same shoe across the board look unified and team focused not "me" focused. If your team wears a single game cleat please answer the following: 1) Best Shoe for the whole team? 2) How did you purchase the shoe (kids or school pay)?
Of course, I would like to hear from others as well. Maybe I need to evolve!?

I required team to wear same colored shoe (black since the late-'80s).
They bought their own. I didn't have a shoe deal so I didn't care what brand-model they were so long as they were all same color.
I also bought them game socks so those would be the same too. They chose length.
We were going to look and dress the same, and call attention to ourselves with how we played, not how we adorned ourselves.
It's called a "UNI-form" for a reason.

Who cares what cleats they wear. I have never seen any team all wearing the same exact cleat in my life. I don't think a cleat has ever won a game.
I would also say peoples feet are different and all cleats fit different not to mention I don't want a WR wearing an OL type cleat and vice versa. So if you want to look unified perhaps go with a brand for the team to get a deal and let them pick from a variety of that brand.

Colleges don't even make their players wear all the same shoe. Everyone has different feet. I have super wide duck feet. Adidas is built by europeans. Their stuff doesnt fit well on me.
And i've always believed its hard to enforce dress code if you don't provide them the clothes you expect. A lot of these kids are just wearing whatever they can find or afford. Unless you provide it for them its hard to enforce.
Im all for one color. Thats uniform. But I really dont care as long as it is black/white/school color.

We care about color, but not the style.

Same as most that have responded already. Color is a must, but maker, type, is up to kid. We do paint cleats of kids who dont want to conform.

Looks like the linemen in your picture all have different colored cleats on LOL Our school colors are black/gold we had a couple kids who couldn't afford new cleats and were digging through the old left overs we keep from years past. A coach on our staff has some connections to another program and we got some cleats from them for the two kids who couldn't afford them. The cleats where white and bright orange.

I can't imagine caring about some of the stuff you guys talk about policing. Amen. Policing the stupid in my classroom is enough without worrying what color shoes a kid buys or if he wants to wear a visor. I hate visors but I'm not going to get on a kid for wearing one.

To me uniform-appearance is part of promoting Team concept and doing everything in a First Class way, developing pride in all aspects of program.
May not fit other coaches' personalities.

Wear what you want, as long as it is a team color and does not distract you from performing your responsibility.
And as long as it is within the constraints of federation rules.
Promotes team, but also allows for some individual expression.

We are a NIKE team. Everyone one wears black NIKE cleats. Our policy manual states that we are a team and that no player will wear anything that sets him apart from the team.

I like it too, Now the problem I think we might have this year is we are now a Under Armour school for football. So we have to wear all their gear now. UA cleats IMO are terrible, and they don't fit the wide feet of the lineman. Supposedly they have hired some ex Nike guys to Help "fix" their show problem .

UA shoes in general are awful. We had them as coaching shoes at my last school. I only wore them for games and I was up in the box. They were falling apart by our third or fourth game.

We also want everybody wearing the same color shoes. We don't care about the brand but they do need to be black.

Lombardi wore a visor at least twice - once in LA Coliseum (I think during Super Bowl I, January 15, 1967) while coaching Packers (it said "Los Angeles Rams" on it, must have been provided by host team), and in 1969 while coaching Redskins.
The cover photo of book COACH: A Season with Lombardi by Tom Dowling about his one year in Washington shows him wearing a visor.

The only thing that I didn't like about the UA shoes was that they were vented for hot weather and by November my toes got chilly. Plus my feets are VERY wide and the UA handles the wide foot much better than the narrow Nikes. But then again my experience with UA was only for a couple of years, and my experience with Nike has been much longer. Adidas are the most narrow shoes I've come across, but then again I've only had those given to me for a short period of time. So far as the cleats thing, we have been a ________ (name brand shoe) for many years over mylat couple of stops. We have always provided cleats for the kids, so they wear what we give them. Therefore we don't have to worry about the color/style/brand/show offness of the cleat since we buy it. So far as getting a shoe that every kid/position can wear, most of the name brands have a 'series' of shoes. They have a low top, mid, and high top in the same style.

Find your local equipment supply guy and get them to give you a bulk deal on shoes/gloves. Offer a skill package and a lineman package. The kids will usually end up with a pretty good discount off retail so you're never going to hear a complaint from the parents. They can wear whatever in practice, but the team shoe/glove is mandatory for games. It's okay to be old school on some things.

Coach, with all due respect, what are u smoking! Everybody knows UA are super narrow and have no arch support at all! They bend like a rubber band. And that's not good for your feet. Just cause they have a stretchy side doesn't mean they are wide. I used to could only wear New balance and got the E, and the had to wear the stability shoe with the roll bar because of severe planter facitus(spell?) And I had custom orthodist in college too. This and finally wearing a brace at night made it go away. UA aren't stability shoes , new balance , and Nike air max are, I wouldn't even call them a Neutral shoe , like the Nike Pegasus , which is one of the best shoes of all time, max Moto, or the volermo. And I agree with you, when Adidas switched Their falcon around 2003/4 ish, skinniest shoe ever. My feet would cramp, back hurt, shins everything. Aweful aweful shoe . Cleats school colors Red Or black

Definitely would not call Lombardi a "visor guy."
On the rare occasions he did wear one seems it was more utilitarian than anything.
Usually at games he wore a fedora or was bare-headed. At practice he often wore the green baseball cap with classic interlocked 'GB' letters.

We went from talking about the color of cleats to debating whether or not Lombardi was a visor guy. In the same thread.
Hang in there fellas. The offseason will be over soon enough. haha

This is my philosophy as well. I am a details guy, and that means no detail is unaddressed, down to the socks, and the team is the end-all, so we are going to address all details and be uniform. As a sporting goods sales pro, my experience with Nike has been much deeper than UA, but UA has not had a good track record over the past 10 years with footwear. Nike has. FYI - they spend more on R&D each year on their product than UA brings in in revenue. Again, Nike spends more in researching how to make their products the best on the planet than UA's annual sales. No one will tell me that UA is making a better shoe. However, not everyone's feet are the same, and not all shoes are the same, so for those saying that "this shoe is this" are wrong; each company makes different shoes for different purposes. Running shoes are designed and made differently than training shoes, etc. You can't compare a Nike Free Trainer 5.0 with a Nike Air Max or Pegasus - they are built for different purposes (training for stability & agility, running for running, comfort, weight, etc.) Each brand has different cleats as well; for example, your QB is not going to wear the high-top Lunarbeast, and your LT is not going to wear the Vapor Untouchable. One is a big boy cleat, one is a skill cleat. Even then, because people's feet are different, that could be reversed, but in principal, you have to buy the right cleat, and you get what you pay for in terms of a $130 cleat being better than an $85 cleat. Ultimately, if you are not providing the shoes, you can't dictate what the kids wear, although you can encourage. If you are providing them, you dictate colors, brand, and options. Your team dealer should also be able to make them available to your team to buy individiually, but at your team discount, which the parents should appreciate, and this allows you to better control what the majority of your team is wearing. IMO, socks are non-negotiable. Everyone should wear the same socks. In a perfect world, you are able to provide or control your team wearing the cleats of the same manufacturer of your uniforms - Nike, UA, or Adidas. If you are wearing Russell or something else, I'm not sure why, unless they are free (looking at you, Siege).
