Generally Shirt and Tie, sometimes coat and tie. Wore a lot more polos this year (my last year before changing schools) and generally coaching attire on Thursdays and fridays. In Offseason though my department started Hawaiian shirt Fridays a couple years ago. Definately a highlight of the week when your AC doesn't work well in your room. Now the shirt and tie combos I pulled out though won me best dressed teacher one year!

is there a difference between favorite and most informative? Saw Rich Rod speak a few years ago at a Nike Clinic....dude seemed a little buzzed before he got up there started cussing, saw a guy in the crowd with his small son and apologized, but went on to give the best line I have ever heard at the end of a clinic talk.....Mentioned about being a parent of a football player and his son got his first recruiting letter....told his son "that's all fine and good but I'm going get you to Arizona, I'll even sleep with your mommma to sign ya!" Had me and a buddy rolling the whole time
(Rhetorical question) Why-who would take a "small son" to a clinic talk?
I should also say....Rich Rod was the last speaker on Saturday Night (so got started at like 9:30-10:00 at night) me and my buddy had same question. Kid had to be like 6-7 years old max, my guess is family made a weekend trip to DC for the clinic and son wanted to be with Dad

Don't schedule them at the same time?
What would YOU rather do - lift heavy weights or PLAY Basketball?
Try to work with the hoops coach.
In Indiana this is maybe the best advice ever! The basketball coach better be a close acquaintance! Try to get them (hoops guys) to buy into what you're doing too. We have scheduled our summer with them. They have certain dates we keep away from and they stay away from ours. In small schools I think hoops and football working together is a necessity. Big thing I like about our new situation is our B-Ball coach will tell his kids he would like them to play football, lift weights, etc. We also tell the kids who play both, they can do both. For example, our conditioning runs from 3:30-5:00 and open gym generally doesn't pick up til 5:15-5:30, so we have had kids lift with us and condition and then go play pick up. Obviously, you try to avoid crossover as much as possible though. Like the poster said what kid wouldn't wanna shoot basketball instead of lifting heavy weights?

One thing we have done which I love is keep power points, for grades, behavior, weight room attendance, strength and conditioning tests, etc. For you guys, when did you see the payoff? I am assuming it won't come in year one, but year 2, year 3 when did it really start to turn around?

What's first thing you do? Started new HC job (first time being an HC) have gone in and been tracking attendance, weight room progress, new workouts, etc. We fundraised and did a lift-a-thon, and are trying to do a 7 on 7 tourney and linemen camp. Gotten great response out of younger guys.....that's the positive.....the negatives I have hit....
Older guys are just sort of bought into the "I don't have to show up, I'll get to play because I am older" attitude. (not all but a high %). Lift-a-thon went well, but feedback I get from trying to get competition and people for 7 on 7 and lineman camp is we're a historically bad program, why should we wanna play you at this point? Just wondering if any guys had encountered similar issues and what you did to change culture and create an atmosphere where program was respected in and out of school

Told a jv offensive lineman to widen out his split on the OL. He stretched his legs out to the point where he couldn't go any farther without doing a split, and asked was that wide enough.....

Looking to go away and rent out a local camp for our first 2-3 days of practice. 1) Coaches, do you think it is worth it? 2) Anyone have a sample itinerary they have used before or can draw something up quickly? My admin appears on board, but when I meet with them I want to have all my ducks in a row.

Looking for some smaller schools, maybe small colleges or larger high schools who have had success enabling a 4-3 defensive scheme and a gun spread option attack. Don't have to do both, but looking for one or the other in hopes that I can get into communication with some coaches and start clinicing over the phone, email, or in person. On a related note, I recently got the call that, pending school board approval, I will be taking over as head coach of a varsity program, so I am interested in any advice or tips or what to focus on in the initial 40 days or so after the board appointment. I am currently in talks to have meetings set up with 1) admin 2) returning coaches 3) middle school admin 4) high school faculty 5) players/potential players 6) parents 7) booster club. I am hoping that maybe there is something I am forgetting and the wonderful community on coachhuey can help me out and realize what I am forgetting. Really excited, even though the program is 2 hours away from my current school, I am beyond thrilled for the opportunity, and ready to commute as much as possible this spring to get the ball rolling and then kick into hyper drive once the summer and pre-season start (and I have a teaching job in the school or locally). So any advice on how to handle that particular situation would be awesome as well.

At the college I played at we were called "The Herd" and had special t-shirts, as well as a "Fat Night" where the OL all went out to dinner together with the OL coach and OC. At the college I assisted at we took a giant boulder and put it down near the Offensive Line section of the field and titled it "The Rock". Then big stones (small enough to carry but pretty heavy) were painted with each OL's number. Upon graduation you got your piece of "The Rock" with your number on it.

once saw a playoff team that my hometown high school won....the kid for the visiting team was leading a 2 minute drill with us up 14-7. Under a minute to play and a third down play gets the visitors inside our redzone but is about 2-3 yards short of the first down. The clock keeps winding. The QB hurries his team up to the line and spikes the ball.....on fourth down. I was 11 at the time and for the last 12 years I have never been able to shake how heart broken that kid must of been. Even then the pain on his face made a big impact on me at 11.

My story with the pink stuff.....we were going have the kids all wear pink socks on one night later in October. I (the assistant jv coach) tell a jv kid at our first game in October to take off the pink socks because everybody else was wearing black socks and we were going to be uniform. Less than a week later our superintendent gets a call from a News Station doing an investigation on our JV team refusing to let players wear pink to support breast cancer (love how they miss the part about us doing it later in the month as a team not as individuals)....My problem with it is with JV games attended by very few people I just don't see the support for the cause I see a handful of kids who wanna be individuals rather than team guys.....but hey that's just me. No money goes anywhere and I highly doubt the Pink Nike Socks, wristbands, gloves they buy sees a dime go anywhere besides Phil Knight's pocket.....but then again I am a skeptic

Well, let me ponder this....I always try to curb my language around kids and do not curse at kids. I also try to correct without yell ( I coach JV mostly, so we need to be more in a teaching mindset). Usually when I curse it is telling our team as a whole that we need to stop going half-a$$ somehow I can't manage to say half-speed when I am in the moment but I am trying.....but I was going ask how many of y'all curse alot away from the kids? I am a big Christian guy, but coaching football has given me a horrible mouth outside of the kids' earshot and I am trying to fix it....anybody with same issue?

You need to have a good split I think. In 2011 and 2012 we had the unfortunate issue of having all JV coaches be personnel that were outside of the school system and only had one coach (the Varsity HC) in the High School. Throw that in with 2 varsity coordinators at the MS level who did little to recruit MS kids because they were already swamped with varsity kids and it was a bit of a logistical mess. This year, I got hired on to teach in January at the HS giving us 2 coaches (HC Varsity and DC JV) at the HS. We then have the varsity OC, Varsity DC, and JV DL/Varsity WR coach at the Middle School, Varsity LB/JV WR coach at the Elementary level and only one outside person (JV HC) on staff. I like the set up we have and am really interested in getting to see my kids each day and get a chance to recruit rising 10, 9, and 8th graders to our JV program

Hey guys,
This may seem a bit odd, but let me explain the background first. Currently, I am a JV coach at our High School. In the past our JV program and Varsity program have been at an elite level. The 2013 Graduating Class saw their total record in 4 years on the varsity level at 38-11 with 3 playoff victories and 2 district titles. The JV at that same time period has compiled a 33-5-1 record. Despite all this our numbers are low this year even for a small school (about 630 kids total) I noticed there was quite a bit of fall off in our freshmen class numbers this year thus far at summer conditioning, and I want to get some of those kids in pads for the 2014 season (trying to think long term). Some points to address.
#1 I currently teach at the high school and am unable to get good contact with the 8th graders on a consistent basis or the 7th graders, and with the lack of a middle school program we suffer in that respect.
#2 What I have begun doing now is sort of a two-fold recruiting effort over the 2013-2014 school year. First, I am currently working through our master list of freshmen and looking at kids in the data base and trying to weed out any historical grade or discipline problems. After compiling this list, I am going to consult with other teachers (especially P.E. teachers) and get a look at the kids in person and weed them down to the kids I wanna talk to. On the other fold of recruiting, I am just going to take an active effort in visiting our youth league's game when at all possible, and try to be visible and let the kids know who I am.
Now for my questions......
#1 With my proposed idea with the freshmen (kind of like college recruiting to some extent) how should I approach it? Do I try to contact everyone in person? Send out a mailer to families, do a mass campaign throughout school once winter conditioning starts up? What have you guys done that has worked? #2 What more can I do on the youth level? I don't wanna step on the youth coaches toes, but want to be more present then we have been as a program in the past. We already ran our youth camp for the summer. #3 Any other ideas? #4 Am I crazy? Going overboard? etc

Quick Update we actually worked things out with our staff and the new fella will be helping both JV and Varsity. I enjoy doing the Defensive Coordinator duties in which I have a bit more say than a position coach. I love the new guy after a week though, and to answer the college playing question we both played ball in college our freshmen years but that was it. The young guy has his nose in the playbook learning the stuff and I am looking forward to working with him, our DC and HC talked to me and were both under the impression that I enjoyed the coordinator duties so much they didn't wanna take that away from me. So I am excited for the 2013 season.

After giving it some thought I have cooled off about the situation and am encouraged to help the guy out in the position he is in, I was wondering if I was justified at being upset originally. Honestly, I hope he does well in his position and I continue to have success in mine.

The one leg up I will give the guy is he played the position while I inherited it, I am more miffed that it seems like dues had to be paid on my end the past three seasons while dues are not being payed on his end. We are both young and he is fresh out of college without coaching experience

Hey Guys,
Our staff is bringing on a young guy who is just getting into coaching. Me and him both played at our high school together, and I have three years experience over him. However, I am going to remain on JV as the JV Defensive Coordinator and he is going up to Varsity to coach LB's (my position I have coached on JV for 3 years). I love working with my JV guys, but should I be upset by this since ultimately I want to end up moving the career ladder?
