Coach I can relate...Id go with what blb said, but don't do what I did at one point. I would spend a lot of time in our offseason program questioning and complaining about attendance to the kids who were showing up. (stupid to preach to the choir). We set up a points system where you earn jersey numbers, helmets, free camp and gear with "power points" you can earn them for everything but you get the majority of them from lifting and conditioning (this avoids any issues with parents complaining about me punishing kids for offseason attendance)....but for us we have already handed out 4 jersey numbers already for our dedicated guys should hand out 2-3 more in the next week or so as well. We also made attendance to workouts a requirement for 7 on 7's and camps, gotta hit a certain power point total with a certain amount coming from workout attendance. Take the fun chit away.

26, played youth ball through freshmen year of college. No big side effects from concussions (all mine were from baseball anyway) Had to have knee surgery after I got done playing. Had a subplexing patella where my knee cap kept trying to dislocate during my senior year of HS. Had surgery and corrected the issue. Might of screwed up rehab trying to make it back for baseball my senior year in HS (stupid since I kept the cooler company pretty much my entire baseball career) Still have some knee and back pain but not sure if that comes from playing football for 7th grade-freshmen year of college or playing catcher in baseball from elementary school through high school.....Judging by my knee pain when I catch I would go catcher....but who knows

Anybody know if you can receive it multiple years in a row or not? We were lucky to receive a grant last year, and I was unsure if they eliminated you from the application process once you had previously won one.

don't know if this well known knowledge, but I was told by my Riddell rep that Riddell purchased all of Russell's jersey cuts in order to make replacements etc. Do not know if he was just blowing smoke or not.

Piggybacking off of what fantom is saying imagine Bill's genius with a Jerry Jones (I am a Cowboys fan and I can tell you they would of NEVER worked well together, heck Jimmy ran off Jerry for fighting about the credit) I think the Pats are admirable for the fact that everyone buys into the Patriot Way Front Office through coaching staff. Any sense of an ego amongst the major players in the front office and owners box would crush that

It could also help alleviate some of the troubles you have in youth football in terms of wide open field, full speed hits to the helmet, and lack of fundamental tackling and blocking. You mentioned the ol' put the fastest kid on the team at rb and run toss sweep play....well imagine if you forced coaches away from that and into teaching proper tackling and blocking bc the toss sweep wasn't as affective. I like the idea of USA football with shortening the field and modifying the game for younger levels (some arguments to drop back from playing an 11 man game to a smaller game which I am all for, when I played youth ball we had maybe 15-17 kids on our team.....now I think about that as a hs coach and think how in the world we were able to keep a team like that) I would modify the game up until you get to the 12 year old range heck I teach 12 year olds and the thought of some of them playing tackle football still kinda throws me for a loop

argument could be made that a bad youth program or experience could deter playing as much as anything. I think we can be smarter in how we do youth football though....When I played youth ball (15 years ago so still relatively not that long ago) we still played with 1) weight limits (hate it, I get it but we have had kids come through our youth league who either starved themselves to run the ball or played OL and went on to be all state tailbacks in high school go figure) 2) not much in the way of coaching education or certification major no no now a days. 3. My big complaint here....we played on the same size field as the high school. Why play youth ball or flag football on the same size field? Especially for kids under 13? Smaller kids don't play baseball on a field that has 90 foot base paths? A lot of leagues don't let kids play basketball on 10 foot goals under a certain age. Why is football so inclined to the 11 on 11 100 yard format for every age group. No offense, but when I played youth ball that was boring as chit.....tell me our game is 6-0.....not because of stellar defense or anything but because going on a 60-70 yard drive in youth ball is downright impossible without constant explosive plays.

Sometimes the PR for doing them and easing the parents nerves I think goes a ways in helping and may even be like a placebo affect. I've been amazed at the change of concussion protocol since I stopped playing high school football after the 2008 season....last season our trainer or sometimes school nurse was generally quick if anyone had any type of a head ache then it was an automatic concussion protocol and we lost a lot of kids for a few weeks for protocol. Blew my mind when thinking back to when I played....shoot I can't remember going home from practice without a head ache atleast once or twice a week, just wild the change in concussion protocol and being observant in 10 years, heck my 3rd year coaching we had a kid go out at halftime couldn't remember plays what was going on in the game, etc we took him out figured automatic concussion.....kid goes to the hospital and is fine. Blew my mind the doctor let him practice on Monday. That was 6 years ago. Just unreal the amount of information and changes that have been made when you think about it

Our rules allow a kid 40 quarters in a season, we have been doing that on the small school level for a long time though. When I was a JV coach years ago we worried about quarters for quarters but then we realized, at our level, as long as guys weren't starting on Thursdays and Fridays they were fine

how low have you guys gone before in order to have a JV team, we are looking at probably low to mid 40's I would guess this upcoming season. I generally have a handful dress up on Fridays and help relieve us when needed, but our JV games are on Thursdays so can't do the style of everyone on one team and who doesn't play friday gets in monday

Okay so kinda informal. Last year early on in 7 on 7 I was a 4-3 primarily cover 2 and cover 4 team, but quickly figured out we were better going 4-2-5 and man in 7 on 7....go figure we did well and won. Come season time we struggled in zone and when we ran man we got knifed in the run game, so this year new mindset 4-4 (4-2-5) cover 3 being our base...well first night of 7 on 7 and had a very young group, we got a lot better at cover 3 tonight, but didn't do so hot overall (actually defensively did really well, but not as many takeaways, etc. lot of "less exciting" short pass to flats defense swarms and gets there type stuff).....I mean am I crazy for feeling better with what I saw tonight in learning our base system over putting us in something that is probably more competitive for the 7 on 7 season?
I was wondering what you guys feel, for us, I may see a team that throws over 40% of time maybe once.....maybe all year. Better to practice what you're going do and get better or better to make your guys more competitive in the modified version of football we call 7 on 7

The way we are going to try to set it up next year (I am hoping to have a staff of 10-12)
Defensive Staff and Offensive Staff.
First Part of Practice Is Indy....when Varsity is on O JV is D Second Section Special Teams: JV on Defensive Special Teams (Punt Return/Block, Kickoff) Offense on O ST (KOR, PUNT) Third: Inside Run/Pass Skel Varsity O JV: D Fourth: Team (Me as Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator go up to see our Varsity on O) our JV HC who is the JV DC would be expected to do the same when they have O Team Fifth: Opposite Team Varsity now has 15 Minute D Refresher vice versa for JV.

Anyone apply for any grants in terms of helping you to fundraise or get equipment you needed? I know about USA football, but was unaware if there were anymore out there. At a previous school we applied and got he USA Football grant for a bunch of pads, I'm in a different situation with the need for some new stuff but low funds so any help on ideas

Keith and Joe Daniel podcasts I've stumbled upon just in last month or so, I enjoy them on commutes as well as at the gym can usually get in one or two a day depending on my workout, I'll get up at 4:00 head to gym with it playing then put in ear buds finish one episode in gym and then listen to another episode on way home and then to school after I shower and eat. Really have come to love that over repetitive top 40 music both in gym and on the road

This year we're in a defensive battle we are trailing 9-6 (oddly enough no field goals (missed extra point for us, safety for them). Their homecoming and they are having their best season in YEARS, we get sacked on third down and have fourth and 20 on our own 22 with right at one minute to play.......bam 78 yard touchdown pass which really went about 30 in the air, other 48 our freshmen WR shake and baked the DBs and off to the races....wildest finish to a game I e ever experienced

One way I did it last year was I had all kids who were eligible for varsity fill out a card with top 4 jersey # choices and all kids for JV do the same. Kids put their name on the back, and we organized the names by Pride Points and constructed the roster, so if you came up and your first and second pick were gone you got your third pick....why do it on cards? Well, it kept the seniors or younger guys from getting mad at the individual or taunting or intimidating a younger kid fro taking their number.

Just got my first job as a HC this season......good knight I underestimated the grind! Fundraising, take care of field, equipment, EVERYTHING!!!! My biggest advice be prepared for 90% of your headaches to be with something that is not X's and O's related especially if you are at a small school, I am dying right now to hire a Football Ops guy.
