Looking for some smaller schools, maybe small colleges or larger high schools who have had success enabling a 4-3 defensive scheme and a gun spread option attack. Don't have to do both, but looking for one or the other in hopes that I can get into communication with some coaches and start clinicing over the phone, email, or in person. On a related note, I recently got the call that, pending school board approval, I will be taking over as head coach of a varsity program, so I am interested in any advice or tips or what to focus on in the initial 40 days or so after the board appointment. I am currently in talks to have meetings set up with 1) admin 2) returning coaches 3) middle school admin 4) high school faculty 5) players/potential players 6) parents 7) booster club. I am hoping that maybe there is something I am forgetting and the wonderful community on coachhuey can help me out and realize what I am forgetting. Really excited, even though the program is 2 hours away from my current school, I am beyond thrilled for the opportunity, and ready to commute as much as possible this spring to get the ball rolling and then kick into hyper drive once the summer and pre-season start (and I have a teaching job in the school or locally). So any advice on how to handle that particular situation would be awesome as well.

I am based out of central VA but willing to travel to NC, MD, and your basic mid-atlantic area.

Been around option football for a few years, not out of the gun though.
We run a 42 defensively. I think it's relatable to 43 stuff.
I have been a part of a 43 team in the past.
Love to talk ball. PM me.

Number 1: the kids must trust you. They gotta know that you are there for them and the team, and NOT for yourself. I just left a program where the new hc was all about how he looks. He literally told the kids, "I'm a great coach and you are ruining this for me!" He quickly lost every kid's trust and went 0-10. You also must know your schemes inside and out. The kids will ask questions and if you can't answer they will lose faith in your ability. I've been a dc for years until this staff. When I mentioned what our upcoming opponent does every game when you defend a certain way, he paused and said, "we're not worried about that." They used it against us for 2 td's. Don't try to cover your lack of knowledge with yelling. They will see right through you.

As a new head coach the first thing I will tell you is document everything. Meetings you have and what was discussed, player attendance at off season, pre-season, fundraising etc. You can not have too much documentation. Save everything by year it is much easier to find that way. Set up folders on your computer for each year and add everything that happens into it. If you have a scanner it makes things much easier. Don't be afraid to have people who are smarter than you on your staff. But give them credit when it is due.
When the team succeeds, they did it. When the team fails, You Failed.

haha I love the gun stuff for certain reasons, but the under center has its advantages. Depends on personnel

my thing is this with the 4-3, other than having two high secondary, what are the advantages in high school of the 43 over the 44?? I love the 43, I worry about weakside flat coverage and run support.

Besides personnel?
If you're worried about weak side run support play Quarters (Cover 4).
If you're worried about weak side Flat coverage, play Cover 2.
Remember coach, EVERY defense has a weakness, i.e. you can't defend EVERYTHING from ANY defense.
That's why you have change-ups in fronts-coverages, stunts, blitzes, etc.
