Looking to go away and rent out a local camp for our first 2-3 days of practice. 1) Coaches, do you think it is worth it? 2) Anyone have a sample itinerary they have used before or can draw something up quickly? My admin appears on board, but when I meet with them I want to have all my ducks in a row.

Did it this year for the first time. Best pre-season choice I've made. We really came together as a team at camp.

Where are you located? Where are you trying to go for your camp? Whats your budget? Dates?

When I coached in AZ lots of schools did this (due to the heat). Those with money would head out to California for about a week. I was in charge of logistics for this (because I was from California and knew the area), I would recommend you make sure the location you are going to has all the amenities you require (food, showers, wt room, available fields, etc.)
That being written, I don't see it as being something of great importance. I understood its necessity in Arizona (due to weather) but if you don't have this specific reason for doing this then I don't know why you would. Most teams are mandating hours from the kids throughout the summer, and I imagine you could hold practices at your own facility as opposed to traveling.
I guess I am not as big on the whole "team bonding" stuff; I feel that most coaches when they got the kids away on their own will just use up all day trying to do more work (field, class, etc) and there will be limited time for bonding activities anyhow. Additionally, the season is about to start, and they arent gonna have any time when it does; if you can let them spend a few nites at home, relaxing with family and friends then all the better. It could help stave off late season burn out.

We do our camp at the school, I don't know if you want or are able to do it but you save money on trying to rent property. We received some cots from our fire department to use during camp, we do 5 days, 4 nights. We didn't do it last year, did it the year prior. The kids actually want us to do it again because they have so much fun and get to just worry about football and hanging with their team mates for a week.

We did this at my last two schools and it was great. We are lucky that if you get 15-20 minutes outside our city you can be in the middle of nowhere pretty quick so that made it easier in case anything happened or we needed stuff etc. The players would report to camp Sunday night about 5 then boosters would have a picnic for families which was about an hour. Have a team meeting and then we did some relay team race type stuff, team tire flip, sled push etc to kick it off.
Daily schedule was 8-10 1st practice then a 30 min break quick special teams run thru lunch about 12. 12:30-1 morning film review. 1-4:30ish free time/rest 5-7 2nd practice 7:15ish dinner then quick film. 11:00 lights out
Last night we would do a skit night where the players got into groups and made fun of the coaches. Was usually a pretty good way to end camp.
We were lucky to have a pool at the camp so players could use that during the day to cool off and soak a bit. Also being close to home we had lots of parents who would come out to cook and take care of all that for us.
Very positive experience for us. Of course we had great kids who we didn't have to worry about being out there and behaviors. If you can go for it well worth it.
