I've never been much for podcasts, but everyone keeps telling me I should check them out. What are some good ones? That reminds me... I need to subscribe to X and O Labs... I like the Run the Power Podcast, Coach Ron Mckie, and the AFCA has one too I believe. If you have an iPhone just go to the podcast app via the Apple Store. Not sure how it works with Android. Thanks for the plug coach. If you want a blog then you cant go wrong with Smartfootball. I find myself checking his site every other day.

Pretty much dropping most drop back passing. Half Roll, Quick Game Boot, and a ton of double moves to get the ball downfield. I like this. Why the change?

Outside WR on the left = L Outside WR on the right = R They stay on those sides. No more X & Z. Too many kids got way too confused for how simple it should be. We do the same thing. Except we changed because I was getting confused.

r4football systems if you can afford it. Talk with DSQA c4 r4 think there is an e4 anything 4 with dub maddox or darrin slacks name on it is freaking fantastic. I purchased the c4 program 8 years ago or so and still pull out the DVD's from time to time to give myself a refresher. My last school purchased the r4football systems the last month I was there, I believe it says it can accelerate your learning by 10 years, I had been coaching 12 when I saw it walked out mind blown how much information was on it. I thought I was pretty smart until I went through his game planning stuff. Coach McKie and Coach Rowe have youtube channels that they put some pretty good stuff on. As well as several coaches on this site, just look down at the bottom of their posts and you will see links to their websites and/or youtube channels You can sign up for RPOBlitz they send out an email every so often breaking down a new or different RPO, wish they had an archive though. Went to a clinic here and multiple coaches talked about Malcolm Gladwell as an author to read, also Carol Dweck was another. The books they talked about were thinking differently, think outside the box and what kind of mindset we all need to have. Not necessarily books about football. I have also found that coaches on this site are extremely helpful, if you have a question ask on here, or shoot them a PM. Thanks for the shout out coach. I also have a podcast and website. Website can be found in my signature and the podcast is hereAs for books, you are spot on with Malcom Gladwell. Love all of his books. Same as Carol Dweck. Made me change the way I thought about grit and how I need to teach my kids - and myself - how to have the growth mindset. Couple of other books I'd read are Jocko Willink, Daniel Kahneman, and Charles Duhiggl Also, if you aren't on Twitter then I would suggest that. There are a ton of fantastic coaches talking ball all day on Twitter.

Hey Coaches, Wanted to let ya'll know I am giving away five hard copies of Coach Cody Alexander's Cautious Aggression book. Coach Alexander runs an amazing blog at Match Quarters where he talks about, you guessed it, Quarters coverage. He knows what he is talking about too since he was a GA at Baylor under Phil Bennett. If you want to enter for a chance to win Coach Alexander's book then here's the link: Win a hard copy of Cautious Aggression

Sorry for the double post but one thing I would like to add on I just got in my email is Coach Mickey Conn's presentation on "Building a HS Football Program". This was an excellent talk and in my opinion the best one of the clinic. drive.google.com/open?id=0Bz5AQYsSJNUwZWd2c1ZOenZvWE0You are right coach. I think this clinic talk was the best one given at the Clemson clinic.

We keep score in our inside period, team period, one on one period, and our team blitz period. This keeps the kids from going through the motions and makes each period fun and exciting. The losing team has to do 25 push ups at the end of the period. This is something I would like to do more of. Could you go into the details of how you do this? Sure. We aren't that smart so we keep things simple. The offense has to get five yards i n inside period. If they get five yards then they get a point. If the defense stops them then they get a point. If the defense causes a fumble then they get five points. We have a coach keep track during the period. Losing side has push ups. For team the points go like this: Offense gets points for 5 yards rushing, +10 yards passing, +20 points scoring. Defense gets points for +5 for keeping rushing yards under 2, +5 for sack, +5 for pass break up, +10 for interception, +10 for fumble, +20 for scoring You can set the points and yardage however you like. We like to set the yardage higher for the offense because we want them to try for extra yardage.

I like the air raid approach to warming up, skipping traditional stretching and going through drills at varying speeds. However, all I've ever found is this from an offensive perspective, what would it look like for a defense? Circuits? Our defense has a turn over circuit that they do instead of a stretching period. They go about fifty percent speed and focus on stripping the ball, scooping and scoring, and high pointing a pass. The kids love it and our defense increased their turn over ratio.

Coach, what did Coach Logo talk about? I saw his screen game stuff. Was just 3 main screens. One of them being straight bubble so it didnt take much time. But it was really good info and I loved the simplicity of it. Were the other two slow screens and tunnel? I would love to hear him talk, but he wasn't speaking near me.

Phil Longo (OC @ Ole Miss that was just hired from Sam Houston) was legit tho. Did a great job being super real with everything. Kept stressing simlify, simplify, simplify. And was real good in talking about technique and little coaching points. Looking forward to Tampa Glazier this wknd. Coach, what did Coach Logo talk about?

Do you all grade film? Cause then I agree. But using hudl to annotate a play has really helped our players understand what we want. I just started using the annotate and share on Hudl. I can circle where the kid went wrong. Write notes about what kid should have done. And share the clips privately when I want to. That way the kid doesn't get embarrassed. The best thing about it is since I've started doing this I can tell an improvement of our kids' play.

About a month ago I visited a friend of mine who is the HC at a school close by. He is a big proponent of servant leadership and I wanted to learn about it. His big thing was an acronym E.A.T - meaning Great Effort, Great Attitude, Great Trust. That's it. Those were his program standards. Then he took those standards and constantly used them as teachable moments. It was really great stuff - so much so that I am bringing a version of that back to my school. Along with that he also doesn't punish his kids with up/downs, sprints, or bear crawls. The theory is that kids should not be punished with "hard work". "Hard Work" is and should be considered good- if you work hard, good things happen, etc. I'm getting a little wordy here, but the point is what coach Vint has to add is spot on for me. I am in an urban setting at a school who has historically had a bad culture - but I am not letting the way that culture is affect what we are trying to do with the kids in our program.
Just my two cents and again, coach Vint thank you for sharing....
Coach, How do you go about punishing kids? I hate making them do up/downs and everything but it's the only thing I know. What's a better way?
