Alot of schools will post their spring practice schedule online/twitter. Some do require that you call ahead.

I'm not a fan of keeping players from working out in the offseason. A lot of kids, mainly skill players, don't like working out anyway. Kicking them out of the weight room isn't much of a punishment. I agree with this but what good is it for a kid to come to weights all off season but failing classes and not being eligible to play when the season comes around? How are you handling your athletes in the off season who are struggling academically?

So based on some of the ideas here I will be giving my "at risk" academic kids a travel sheet. On the days we have weights they will pick up the travel sheet in my office and have each teacher for that day fill it out with information such as homework done, homework tonight, comments, etc. This will be their entry ticket into weight room. No travel sheet equals no weights.
What suggestions do you have if students are failing a class for example? I feel just turning them away from weights without a plan to fix the problem isn't totally productive.

Outside of what the OP mentioned, we make grades a big part of our out of season accountability/competition program. Along with earning points for increases in main lifts, points for attending workouts, points earned in competitions, etc, we include grades. We also stay on top of their grades through contact with teachers. Any problem in class--not doing work, grades slipping as well as behavior--we want to know about it and we take immediate action. Can you give an example of taking immediate action

We keep score in our inside period, team period, one on one period, and our team blitz period. This keeps the kids from going through the motions and makes each period fun and exciting. The losing team has to do 25 push ups at the end of the period. This is something I would like to do more of. Could you go into the details of how you do this?

We are looking at upgrading our sled this season. We are looking at both the Rogers Tek and Lev sled. I have only seen and used the Lev Sleds.
Has anyone had experience with the Tek sled? Are they any good?
Thanks

The "showing them you care" post got me thinking about making a questionnaire to have the players fill out. What are some questions you would put in this questionnaire? Here are some i've thought of:
1. What other sports do you play(in school, out of school)? 2. Do you have a job? 3. Who do you live with? 4. What's your favorite tv show/movie? 5. How long have your played football? 6. Why do you play football? 7. What do you want to get out of this season?
If anyone has one already that they use and would like to share, by all means please share.
Thanks

When I was a young single coach I thought coaches were nuts for missing time/vacationing on the summer. Now married with a kid my whole perspective has changed. I think it's very important to show your players that you spend time with your family. I encourage them to do the same in the summer before official football starts.

Defensive Line Reactions: Base- Squeeze Reach- Push/Pull Down- Run the Heel Line Double- Sit and Split
I've always taught what a block looks like, what we do, how we do it, then rep, rep, rep. I also have the kids repeat the cue to me.
For example: Coach: What block was that? Player: Base Block Coach: What do you do? Player: Squeeze
If a player can't tell me those answers it tells me 2 things
1- He isn't attacking/reading his key(V of the neck of the OL) 2- He doesn't know the proper reaction to the key

I like that system but to play devil's advocate: What if a kid misses due to a special circumstance? Doctors appointment, family emergency, etc? Now obviously you have to give the kids the benefit of the doubt in these circumstances but we also know there are kids who will use this to "beat the system". How do you determine what's fact and fiction?

Just watched an absolute classic on the website: Chuck Klausing: Football's Game Winning Trick Plays. Fantastic and entertaining. I had a great time just watching this old timer tell stories about trick plays from the past. Guaranteed to get a laugh or two!!

Why not best of both worlds, players take a knee in front of the coach while you coach'em up?

Actually just finished his book last night. The book is mostly a biography on this life but there is some philosophy in there such as his Goals for Success, thoughts on discipline, etc. Definitely a good read for a coach looking to turn a program around. Focus on getting better everyday!

One of the best things we have done is move to the integrated girdles. Everything is included in them except for the knee pads. We no longer have to worry about kids saying my butt/hip/thigh pad got lost/stolen. Only have to worry about the knee pads.
