Our principal and AD both basically told me that I need to start using a planner because I'm so involved in so many different parts of campus life that they don't want things to fall through the crack. The principal in particular recommended one of those for me. I'm struggling, but I'm not going to give up on it. It's like anything else, you have to make a deliberate, consistent effort to establish a habit/discipline.

We do not separate public/private in CA... up until a couple years ago i always thought we should but now i really dont think it matters some of the public schools do way more recruiting than the private schools Especially in the Wild West Southern Section.

Players are allowed to be on the numbers and coaches can talk to them so long as they don’t come onto the field. Throw them some water bottles and talk to them from the sideline. So I can't have my players come off the field? This is always a killer when I have a specialist type position get injured; say my starting center gets hurt and my back-up center is my guard. I'd like to have him get a couple practice snaps with the QB. Nah, you're good there. I had my starting QB getting checked out at one point this year, so I had the backup get some snaps with the center while the process bore itself out.

Also want to study what to do with undersized dl. Lean into it. Last night we terrorized a team with multiple kids over 250 on the OL with our DL tipping the scales at: 190, 185, 175, 165. SPEEEEEED.

It's big around here. I'm to the point of not doing it any more unless it's some major type deal. Hate when a kid who is cramping or something like that is down and everyone is screaming take a knee! It's a cramp!! Now I can see if it's a major type deal where your not sure whats going on, the kid is ko'ed, or if they need to call in the stretcher. I feel like then it's a show of respect for the kid not to be huddled up with your team making corrections or stuff like that when a kid is seriously injured. But other than that it's getting stupid. Oh my god he got kicked in the nuts! Everyone on a knee!! Our opponents never seem to care, but occasionally we'll get their fans pretty upset over it. We had people screaming for us to take a knee last night while they were assessing a kid. Whatever.

for PE they even told us to make sure we did not exert too much energy indoors too... That's why God invented sub-maximal training.

what can you do?? You have to go into the gym...every place I have been in season has first priority...watch film...could you at least walk thru outside?....go after BB team? BTW around here they have cancelled practice because of mosquito's WTF? Is this one of those things that I won't get because of my sheltered California lifestyle?

Can you go in the gym and at least walk through stuff? For arguments sake let’s say that basketball tryouts/practice are occupying the gym space. We haven’t needed to do this, I’m more wondering about other people’s approaches. We have had fairly good air quality most of this week that hasn’t limited us too much.

So with the fires in California our whole state's playoff schedule is seriously thrown off by the air quality. You can't do much of anything outside at the moment.
I'm curious, how would you change your practices if you couldn't do basically any running/heavy exertion? What approach would you take to make sure you're ready to play?

We had the second best season in school history (lost to the two -time defending state champs in playoffs). The thing that surprised me was how much more stressed I was as we won more games. Anyone ever experience that? I was increasingly nervous and anxious, but eventually I just started reminding myself that one of the main reasons we do this is to coach in important, meaningful games. That helped.

Currently in the middle of one of these dream seasons with our varsity team. There isn't much like it! Unfortunately we play the #1 ranked team in our division in the sweet 16 round this Friday. Gonna go give em hell! Do what got you there... and then a little bit more.

Just finished up a pretty special year with my JV. Scored over 40 5 times, pitched 6 defensive shut outs (1 game we had defensive shut out but gave up a KO TD), played everyone 3 times.
I'm very proud of this season because our kids showed tremendous resilience week after week after week and just didn't care what happened, they took care of business.
Some things I learned along the way: 1 - It's REALLY nice to have a great QB. Ours was just dynamite for our Wing-T. He made the offense very dangerous. 2 - It's REALLY REALLY nice to have a great HB. Leading scorer, big play machine, devastating blocker, great teammate. 3 - When they can't score you can't lose. It kinda snuck up on me how good our defense was playing, but we really shut some people down. 4 - If you have the capability of putting in a 2 TE package in the Wing-T, you should really do it. We slowly built up more and more of a 32 personnel grouping until we could basically run our whole offense from it and the last two weeks in particular we were able to really create some problems for people. 5 - Enjoy the ride. I had a great time with a great group of kids. They were frustrating as all get out at times, but they're teenagers... comes with the territory.
I'm savoring this one because our freshmen just finished 3-7 and are REALLY addicted to the notion that injuries are cool...

We try to make sure that we live "more is not better" and that our kids are always excited to play football. To that end, a few things we do:
No football activities of any kind in our football PE classes until after spring break. We won't practice the first monday of playoffs. We'll take monday off during the season if we think it'll keep the kids fresh. We will have padless practices on Mondays or Tuesdays fairly frequently to keep their bodies fresh. No practice on Labor Day.
It really helps and makes a difference.

I used to think Jim Harbaugh was an a$%hole. Just the way he looked on the sideline and stuff. Never met him but just had that jerky look. The Amazon Series has totally changed my mind. He is 180 from what I thought, I still don't like Mich, but Jimbo is stand up... I don't think Harbaugh is an a-hole. I do think he is nuts, though. I straight up love that man, though. He's certifiably insane, arguably a walking punchline at times (did you read the bit about chicken that came out recently???), and his sideline antics are hysterical, but I dig it 100%.

Probably a bad sign that I can’t really pick just one out of the last few years.
I basically get fired/demoted yearly, usually around week 4-5. Last year we were ahead of schedule with it happening week 3.
We don’t work well together but here we are.

"All day long"
"All night"
"A ton"
As in "If they do that we will run (fill in 'concept' here)..." Idk, we saw on film a team line up a certain way and we literally ran the same play all night long. TB ended up with 550yds essentially on one play. They never adjusted and their school board president told me I was a Dick for running that kid so much. I ran Down 13/15 plays to open a game once because there was no point doing anything else. They were denying the Buck Series super hard but never gave any considering to just running off-tackle... HC got mad at me because our HB wasn't involved in the game at all and our FBs were both over 100yds by halftime.

We need some grind. I am trying to stay relaxed. This is my first year with this team...have spent the last 4 months building relationships with the athletes. While we have almost double the #'s of last season. (committed on paper) I have not seen it translate to the weight room. Sounds like traditionally the athletes don't show up until August. No weight room culture what so ever. While I am happy that there are more "saying" they are going to play I am not happy with the no shows. It is a small school and this is my first year with them but man it kills me to wait until August to see what type of team I have. Even looking at scaling back weight room times. Possibly going to 2 days a week Instead of offering it 4. Year 1, 4 months in, you're fine. I mean, it's not going to be what you'd like come gameday but you're setting up the expectations for what the future will hold. One year turnarounds are fluky and rare and often times the product of some really lousy coaching that was screwing up an otherwise solid situation. I'll point to the pre-Harbaugh 49ers as such an example, there was a decent roster (especially on D) and some awful coaching. Bring in great coaching (especially on D) and there's a pretty big bounce back on the field. Celebrate and reward the kids who show up, continue to build as you go. Like silkyice said, don't chase the bottom 1/4 of your roster or worry too much about their attendance. If they're good enough to show up and ball out, cool, but that will be increasingly rare as your time there progresses and the kids who are getting strong start to get REALLY strong.

my new one that I love to hate is "how you do anything is how you do everything" I hate it for many reasons, most importantly that it is just completely absurd. I mean really? everything? so when it's 10:00pm after a long day and dishes need done you go over every surface of each dish with a toothbrush and then map out the perfect dishwasher layout so that each piece gets maximum coverage from the water jets and steam? ...or maybe you are like me and you spray some water on those mofo's and chuck em in there any whichaway that will fit and go on about your life. the whole quote reminds me of the type of people who obsessively iron their underwear and practice having human conversations in the mirror, those dudes end up with dead bodies buried in the back yard....regular people are lazy sometimes and make mistakes why can't we just act like regular guys and let players know it's okay to act like regular guys too my position coach in high school was an old guy that had coached 40 years...we had a saturday practice toward the tail end of two a days in the blazing sun...coach gathers us up and says "look...it's freaking hot and none of us feel like being here doing these same freaking drills over again...but here we are so I'll try to overcome it and coach ya'll and you guys try and get some good reps as we go and after a while we'll be done and we can drag our carcasses home" not the kind of speech that they put into movies or that make a coach look like an ultimate leader....... but we had a good practice and we all loved that coach for never acting like a douche and giving us a bunch of stupid cliches like "how you do anything is how you do everything"...and as I got older and wanted advice about something he was the guy that I would call yeah yeah yeah I'm a cynical jerk and I need to read a book by flip flipping flippen or some other self help con man to change my perspective and grab the bullhorns of purpose driven life thank you I'm gonna defend this a little bit... Had a coach that used to say "There's only been one perfect person and he died 2000 years ago, so go easy on yourself", which I can totally jive with. But at the same time, I have athletes that will work like dogs in the weight room, learn every position on the offense even though they play C, are coachable, play hard, lead by example, lead with supportive words... but have a 2.1 GPA for no reason beyond laziness. That kid needs to hear "how you do anything is how you do everything." That said, I've always believed in examples like you give where you give the "embrace the suck" talk, too. Coaches need social agility and flexibility in order to go far, that's where knowing your situation and having a deep toolbox comes in. As far as coachspeak goes... I die a little inside when I hear coaches mis-use phrases. One HC I know doesn't fully grasp the meaning of this Saban quote he uses a lot "There's no continuum to success", he seems to equate it with something like success doesn't continue to happen while it actually means that you've never made it all the way to SUCCESS. I mentally facepalm every time.

Searched and couldn't find anything on this, so here goes:
So I'm currently our Track HC, JV FB HC, would like to be FB HC one day in the future. I need help staying organized and on top of the details, it's a longtime weakness of mine.
What systems do you have for staying organized?
Do you keep a planner?
How do you make sure that details don't fall through the cracks?
I'm great at big picture stuff and I'm pretty mindful of a majority of the things that matter, but there's plenty of room for growth here.

We've a group of 4 rising seniors that I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get them to come out and run track for me. They're all terrific football players, but they would all be better served with some speed because WHO WOULDN'T BE. It's been frustration for the last two months. I see them training with one of our JV assts (who is a certified trainer) last Saturday at our field. Talking to them yesterday, I ask how much they're paying for that. $20 a session, but "it's worth it, he's helped me so much with my 40 times!" TRACK IS FREE AND WHAT THE F*** DO YOU THINK WE DO WITH THE SPRINTERS??? Anybody employed by your school who charges money to your students should be let go. California is a different deal than other parts of the country. He's a walk-on coach (we didn't pay him a stipend) who makes a living as a personal trainer. I don't begrudge him in the slightest for taking money to work with our kids. I'm beyond annoyed at our kids when I've spent the past 3-6 months loving them up, talking to them about the benefits of track, hunting them down, encouraging them, etc. I've probably had no less than a dozen conversations with each of them. Ah well, they'll get smoked by our QB, HB, DE, and OLB that are all there every day.

Also, this sh!t cannot be healthy for you in the long term. Just eat real food like someone said and workout anyway you’re able The only thing on that list that current science doesn't support as having health benefits is hard alcohol. Fat gets a bad rep because of its name and past biased and unreliable studies. Carbs, especially carbs from processed foods, have the worst effect out of all of the macro nutrients. Moreover, carbs being labeled an important, healthy macro was part of an insane campaign of bad science and misinformation led by some very misguided people. I’m not keto but I like to think I’m pretty well read on things and there’s something to be said for eliminating/reducing carbs, especially processed carbs, from ones diet.

I would rather go an inch wide and a mile deep at this point and clinics are by nature the opposite.
