In honor of the Last Chance You thread about the hc yelling at assistants what are some of the best ear beatings you have been part of.
I had described one the whole defensive staff and I took in that thread where we almost got fired after blowing a huge halftime and fourth quarter lead.
One I gave and feel bad about now:
We are in the first round of the playoffs. In a tight game. We are winning 14-0 but there’s virtually no offense from either side. The team we were playing was pretty good. Their qb had set the state record earlier in the year for TD passes in a game and they had a receiver that could play.
I didn’t feel like they were ever really out of it because they had some big play potential. Our defense is shutting them down though. Flying to the football. I am still wishing we can get some cushion but we are struggling to get it across the goal line.
Late in the third we have their offense 4th and short. They run a counter play. Our backers fly to the direction of the counter steps and can’t get back to their run fits. Their back cuts it back and takes it to the house to cut or lead to 14-7.
One of our assistants (he’s the guy that is a part timer and suggests plays without having watched any film) is standing behind me with another assistant. I hear him say to the other guy, “Damn, nice effing counter!”
I don’t like the guy already, I am not really happy about what happened and I am an immature 29-year-old head coach. The perfect recipe for a flip-out.
I turn around and look at him...try to take a deep breath...try to just walk away...AND rage.
“Nice counter? Nice effing counter!? If you want to root for those guys, sit in their effing stands. Other wise trying coaching someone or shut the eff up!”
Two coaches separated us before we could prolong the dialogue. We held strong after that and won the game. We ended up giving up less that 100 yards of total offense. The other team didn’t complete a pass. We had five interceptions.
Half of their offense came on that counter play...probably was a nice effing counter after all.
I have grown up a little since then. I have tried to completely eliminate yelling from my coaching arsenal. Last year I yelled only three times all year and it was comical to our kids. I understand there are some motivational purposes for it but it’s just not who I want to be anymore.

Ok, I'll play. I had just turned 19 and was student "coaching" (basically keeping stats and assisting with O-Line) my first year at my old high school. First round of the playoffs, we went up 7-0 on the opening kickoff and by halftime neither team could put together any offense, so it's still 7-0.
Cut to late 4th quarter, the other team is driving and down to about our 20. They run load option weak, DE bites and we have nobody there for the QB. I yell "That was wide open!". Head coach looks down the sideline at me and yells "No $h!t!".
I shut up and stayed shut up for the rest of my career there.

Worked for a really emotional guy. But we would get in on Monday and I would have the whole O gameplan laid out, film is broken down and sorted, scout cards, practice plans, etc. Thats my job as the OC. We were ready to roll. This guy would start making all that stuff monday and was essentially never prepared on the same level. At one point in the season one of the d-lineman coach goes "damn whys the O always ready and we're not". So after practice we meet and try to figure out what to do. I offer to help defense during the weekend with film or anything. Dude shoots up out of his chair with clenched fists and a face of absolute rage - "HOW DARE YOU QUESTION MY LIFESTYLE" and stuff like that - he took it as me attacking his family life... Our DC had to bring him back to earth. Most bizarre confrontation.
There was another time he threw markers all over the place - at me, at walls - after I asked a question (those weren't allowed - not much a collaboration/conversation guy).
Loved that place - teaching job, the kids, the admin, the teachers, where I lived. But he made it really easy to leave.

Most fair one was when I was like 18 or 19 and told a story about a coach I worked with on here. My HC wasn't pleased with that (rightfully so). He didn't berate or demean me, but he disciplined me and it was clear I made a mistake. If I was ever to deserve a berating that was probably the best time. Was a young and dumb mistake.
Other time I deserved it was when I was the ST coordinator and ran our KO return throwback to open up the second half. It was a close game. We were 0-7, they were 7-0. Luckily it worked and my HC was a results>process kind of guy so all he said was something along the lines of "It's a good thing you didn't ask me to do that" and we won so all was good. Insanity.

I fired an assistant on the field as we were walking off for halftime once. Long story, but I ended it as he stared at me in disbelief with "Get the hell of my field!"

Not too many actually , as a matter of fact any ones I ever received, all came from the same guy , but the worst one (from him) was probably when I corrected a 1st year coach who happened to be related to the HC , in practice once.
Coaching LB, with the new guy , good kid right out of college, tackle wrap drill chest to bag, kid spears with the top of his head, new guy is talking to another kid, isn't really looking, heard the pop , and just kind of instinctively says "good hit Matt".....
I don't even raise my voice, I just literally say "no coach he dipped his head" .. WELL...the HC overheard it and proceeded rip me in front of the rest of the staff, and team.... For saying something to another coach..... in front of the team.
there were a few others with that coach
Dished out :
Many years ago , I actually posted it here when it happened I believe
Youth ball ....I had an assistant, 44-45 years old, Air Force veteran, son was playing for me.
Dad shows up one day in full equipment, to and I quote, "teach our kids how to hit", they were 13.... looks like Al Bundys old football getup ...we thought he was joking until he was telling kids to run at him full speed.
I run over and pull him aside, tell him to get the pads off before any of the parents see it, or before he hurts someone
He didnt quite grasp why I wouldn't let him, hes telling me "we don't hit enough" that I'm "making a joke out of him" , I'm a bad coach, I have no idea what it takes to coach a team etc..I ask if he understands liability, he tells me he understands fine, do I 'understand the liability of losing a championship?' (again its youth ball)
I tell him hes not touching any kid on this field, he tells me he's taking his kid off the team, Im a joke, I tell him, "Yeah? ? ? youre the only adult in a F'in helmet here"...
He says something else I told him his services were no longer needed ....even worse he never understood why I fired him.

Took a little one last year running scout O. I'd hold the card up glance quick to make sure kids lined up correct. Team D period is going well and I feel we start to get in a groove so to get more plays going and cut the dead time I'd start going through cards to pick next play... Well then for three straight plays had both a kid line up wrong, and a kid go off on wrong count or not execute the card (run wrong route). HC yells over basically get my sh^& together stop getting cute line them up right and get them to run the card right.
Also reminds me of a time on Team D HC goes situational and near end of one session by running placing the ball at the like 22 and says ok 4th and goal. But somehow I manage to just brain fart and say to myself ok 4th and 2 at 22 so I find some power-i or tight i wing card with motion and run quick pitch. This team liked to run short yardage and we sucked at stopping it so I'm like great awesome play. We gain like 8 yds I'm like ok next play first down. HC blows whistle, makes eye contact with me and says man I hope opponent x calls that in the game! I remember giving him this confused look and he repeats situation he yelled out before play. He repeats it a second time and then it sinks in - dum dum you had to get a play to get it in the endzone! Period ends kids break for water and HC comes over. I'm thinking oh man I'm about to get lit into and I'm pissed at myself - but he basically just teases me for the 5mins and had a laugh over it - he was like stuff happens you've been great all year don't worry about it. True to a good close staff it became the running joke with me all year!

Last year I was playing qb for our scout offense most of the season, as we're a triple team, and our starter doesn't throw it great, much less our 2 and 3. Our DC (HC also), I love him to death, but his scout cards often dont make sense... drawing up 10 pers zone read in the backfield, but nothing for the OL guys... and we don't really run true zone, so they don't naturally understand it, or things like running flood, but on the cards its a 5 yd out from 3, and a 7 yd out from 2.. jsut little things that on film might look right, but don't really make sense.
So as the season goes along, I start taking some liberties and slightly adjusting cards and concepts to make sense, as well as adding in some RPO stuff when it was something we'd see that week (he doesn't draw up RPO's, its either a run or a pass, no reads, which obviously isn't how it goes.)
We head into our big rivalry week, and we've got 3 or 4 defensive starters who are banged up and not practicing every day, so the DC is obviously pretty puckered up, and we just shredded them, like 13 straight completions in 7 on 7 with scout team guys.. and he's getting pretty red faced. After practice during our coaches meeting he comes absolutely unglued about how I'm trying to show him up, and I need to run EXACTLY what's on the card, or I'll be selling hot dogs next week. The rest of the staff was doing everything they could not to laugh

Dad shows up one day in full equipment, to and I quote, "teach our kids how to hit", they were 13.... looks like Al Bundys old football getup ...we thought he was joking until he was telling kids to run at him full speed. We had a couple dads do this at my middle school a few years after I was there. My dad was still coaching and he said 2-3 of the dads put on shoulder pads and helmets to show the kids how to hit hard. I think their plan was to just hit one another. Same thing, they were rocking a mixture of their own leftovers from when they were in high school and the school's equipment. One of the guys was (and still is) the athletic director so they raided the equipment shed for anything close to fitting them. I think my dad was coaching 7/8 and these guys were 5/6, he said he and the 7/8 coach just shook their heads and tried not to laugh in their faces.

My LB gets a facemask called against him for making a great and tough tackle. Incidental contact and I wasn't mad at all about it. Head Coach thinks he is a lousy LB anyway, and has yanked him all year long right in front of me and without any warnings. Really just can not stand the kid. Not sure why, he is a great Will LB. Head Coach loves a sophomore who is really athletic but a terrible LB. My Will LB is a senior and 2 year starter.
Anyway, after the facemask against our in town rival the Head Coach flips. Pulls him. Makes me put in the sophomore kid who has no business playing LB. Offense false starts. I sneak my pulled Will LB back on the field between the penalty assesment. Head Coach is on the opposite end of the sideline. So I pulled the ol' sneak attack substitute.
Head Coach notices the LB back in the game, goes on huge rant and is giving me the death glare and making his way aggressively toward me. Chewing my butt hard as he is approaching where I believe he will unleash the torrents of hell when he fully arrives. He is way pissed. Finger pointing. Arms flailing. WHO PUT HIM BACK IN!! WHY IS HE IN THERE!?!?! Full on rage and I anticipate the in-game pink slip. Guy has a raging old man temper.
Play starts. Outside receiver runs comeback to the boundary. Will LB drops like the stud he is. Head Coach less than 5 feet away from me perhaps ready to throat punch me for the substitution. Will LB snatches that son of a b**ch and scores a 43 yard touchdown right in front of Head Coach.
Head Coach pauses. Looks at me. Looks away. Looks at me. Looks away. Holds one finger up for the PAT. Looks back at me. Laughs a little bit. Shakes my hand and says, "Heck of a call. I guess you were right!"
Best butt chewing ever?

We were playing a very good team we knew we probably couldn't beat, so we come up with a new kickoff where we could either kick deep or onside kick, each by a different kid kid kicking the ball. I was the special teams coordinator. We onside kick the first 2 times, recover the ball and score. The third kickoff I send out our regular kickoff team. As HC is yelling at me that he wanted to continue to do the special kickoff team, our regular kickoff team recovers a fumble by the other team. I just looked at the HC and shrugged my shoulders and he didn't have any more reason to yell at me. That probably saved me from getting fired during the game!

Probably a bad sign that I can’t really pick just one out of the last few years.
I basically get fired/demoted yearly, usually around week 4-5. Last year we were ahead of schedule with it happening week 3.
We don’t work well together but here we are.

As a 21 year old asst, took off my glasses and offered them to the official after a questionable UR call that brought a TD back.
Deserved every second of the chewing I got and apologised to the players afterward.
