I have spent my entire career coaching in really small rural schools. I have never had a HC speak to me the way Coach Brown at ICC speaks to his assistants. How common is this at the upper levels of football?
Does Saban, Harbaugh, Swinney, Meyer, Richt, Smart, Dantonio, etc, etc, speak to assistants like this?

Yes. Meyer and Herman are some of the worst.
Had a buddy that was with Herman for about a week and quit because Herman was the biggest {censored} you could imagine to him and the staff.
Not everyone is like that though.

I've been to a lot of college practices and haven't seen anything like that.

I know a girl who was paid to go on Jerry springer PPV and pretend some dude was her baby daddy, take her clothes off, and yell a bunch.
Odds are nearly every moment of these shows are scripted.

If I remember correctly, Schembechler said Woody had hit him when they were working together.
I haven’t watched any new series yet but I have worked for two guys that could lay it on you. One was a cusser and mean as a snake the other didn’t use foul language but was much meaner than the first.
Out of all of the rants the first one went on the most intimidated I ever was came on a Sunday morning after we game up a 28 point half time lead the day before.
He calmly came into our team meeting. We went through all of the normal whole team agenda stuff then broke off into offensive and defensive meetings.
Our head coach calls the offense so all of us defensive guys head to our conference room. We fire up the film to do the stats, grade the guys, and fix our mess. The head coach walks in. Calmly sits on the edge of the chair. Leans in towards the group and says “Well guys...fucKKIINNGG FIX IT. Or I will find someone who will.”
He slammed the door on the way out and I don’t think he talked to any of us again till Thursday.
Out of all of his rants this one was different. It was D3 ball and I was a lay coach so I had teaching job too. Getting fired wouldn’t have broke me, but the other coaches in that room paid the bills with football money so it would have been devestating to them.
At that point I knew full time coaches have a different level of pressure. The football isn’t just football and the success of the team directly impacts all areas of their lives. I am not justifying negative communication with staff members but that kind of pressure can have a huge impact on some guys.
By the way both guys I worked for I still love and would work for them again. We had good relationships and knew at the end of the day there was mutual respect. Not sure if that is the case in the show or not.

In this case, the guy is probably just a toad though. In the defense of the curtness (to be polite) of some of the coaches, keep in mind that for you and most of the high school guys around, when a player screws up, it could be because of the genetic tools. Your player got reached because well, he is just a bigger than average (for your team) HS kid who is probably struggling in Geometry and can't get the cute read head in French to notice him. When one of the guys you mention have a 3 tech reached, it is "WTF, I give you the best of the best of the best and you can't get him to do his job. I sure as hell will get him to do his job if you cant"

Saban has been caught on multiple occasions chewing out assistants. I’m sure it happens everywhere in some form. Maybe not yelling but you can quietly tell a guy you think he’s doing a $hitty job.

If the asst. didn’t like it they could go somewhere else. I’m not saying it right I’m not saying it’s wrong but I am saying it’s his team and he seems to be doing an ok job

Yelling at an assistant and what this clown does are worlds apart.
An ass chewing every once in a while behind closed doors or over a headset versus mother-f'ing the entire staff in front of the kids (neither of which respond positively to it). This dude's persona is laughable. When I saw the shot of him in his blow-up jacuzzi smoking his cigar I lost it lol

Now doing it in front of everyone to put on a show or behind closed doors is another matter.

I'm on Episode 4. I've been yelled at on the field before. Didn't bother me. There's a lot of emotion and immediacy so it happens. If a header ever MF'd me on the field like that there would have been a chance for a fist fight on the field.

Haven’t watched it yet. Don’t plan on it...
Based on what I’ve been hearing and reading, it sounds like some of the assistants are real slaps and have it coming.

. How common is this at the upper levels of football? really depends on if you need help with your headsets not sure what its like "today" but it isn't uncommon to be fired several times on the sideline during a season

Our staff in general is really calm and collected in our interactions with one another, especially on game days.
Did get chewed out in front of about half of the staff by the AD over a situation involving a player he didn't think I was taking seriously enough - threatened to fire me and the whole 9 yards like two hours before a playoff game. Everybody else said he was way out of line and overstepping and stuff. I've had my a$$ chewed before, I got over it and he more or less apologized later...my opinion of him and his professionalism is lower than it was before but we're cordial.
I'd probably deal with it from a HC or coordinator more in stride, though I wouldn't WANT to deal with it.

Spent time on an SEC football team post 2005 and never saw a coach spaz out on another. Nor did I hear anyone spaz out on the headset during a game.
Our HC might get fired up on occasion and maybe yell something over the headset like "Damnit John [O.C.] run the d*mn ball right down their throat" or "Damnit John [D.C] we gotta get some heat on 'em on third and long, S**T"
That was the extent of it and I never thought any of that was personal or over the top in anyway.

I'm talking more the stuff that goes on during practice or even in the coach's office.

I have a buddy who’s a QCC at an SEC school and he told me people get their a$$ripped all the time. When I played D2 ball the second staff we got cussed us all the time. The DC used to reem the safeties coach in front of god and everyone. The strength/ dline coach who was a giant roided up a$&hole grabbed me from behind by my shoulder pads and threw me out of his way once. I’m fairly certain this stuff goes on more than you realize

I was a head coach for 10 years. Never once did I dog cuss or threaten an assistant during game or practice. We had some loud disagreements from time to time in the office. I have told my assistants over the phone to shut up because I wanted to talk to somebody else. Both guys got it. Hell my OL coach would tell me to be quiet sometimes. Honestly we all had a good relationship.
