Coaches, Have a chance to propose a new locker room to our administration next week. This will not be a new building, but taking unused space and converting it. 3 years ago, we got brand new lockers in our old locker room, but some things are changing. The old locker room is closest to the new soccer complex, so soccer is going to take over our old locker room and we'll be moving into a new space and sharing with lacarose. Plus, the training room will be upstairs in the new locker room, and its a lot closer to our new practice field. How would you design the new space regarding layout? I want to build in a small coaches office that the LAX guy and I could share in our seasons, and an assistant coaches room where each coach could at least have a locker and we'd have enough room to meet and watch film as a staff. For the players I want it to be nice, and not so sterile, as our current locker room is. Does anyone have carpet in their facility? I was thinking about putting all the lockers around the outside and leaving the middle open. I have a friend in the electronics business who said he'd donate a tv in exchange for ad space, so that would be nice. Budget is pretty tight, but what would be on your wish list/must have

Will PE classes be using your new locker room or the old one? I think that plays a role in how you have to design things

Laundry accessibility. Even if you can't afford to get the washer/dryer right now, it's a great thing to have. They redid our locker room here several years back and the coach then told them not to because he didn't want to mess with it. I don't want to either but it's just part of things and now we don't have the ability to go back and put it in.
I would also say more than enough lockers for the expected number of players you will have. Don't skimp now or else at some point it may not be enough.

We built a locker room at my previous school. We tore out an old unused PE locker room and converted it. We had to add a couple of walls to enclose it. We chose not to do carpet, but instead went with a poured epoxy floor. They come in a variety of colors (so you can match color scheme if you like). That was the best thing we did....easy to keep clean, holds up, no mersa, etc. We looked at a lot of designs, but basically decided to put 52 lockers around the outside walls of the room, leaving the center open. We got lockers the players could sit in. That way we could have the entire team seated and could talk to all of them at once easily. We also put the shoulder pad racks on top, had them where valuables could be locked away.

keep an open floor plan as much as you can with the space and still get the number of lockers you need

I tried to post this picture in the post above, but couldn't figure it out. I'm going to try again: I don't know if it's showing up or not--doesn't on my computer unless I right click and then "view image"

I like having secure storage in each individual spot. Plus the idea of having an outlet to charge stuff.
We played 2 games at a college this season and used their home locker rooms, the kids loved having a chance to charge their phones. I was a big fan, too.

I am a fan of having a projector hanging from the ceiling, preferably towards a white wall. Have it connected to a computer in the coaches office, or have a lock box section in the locker room... If you do have your lockers aligned across the outside, the team/groups can watch certain cut ups before practice as a team, or have a short 2 min clip about some type of motivation or movie clip. It's just an easy way to be organized when you have to improvise.

We currently have a thick rubber flooring. It is impossible to clean. Before the rubber mats we had carpet. Which did get nasty after a while. We ended up getting carpet donated every 2-3 years and I thought it worked out well. Obviously its a never ending project, but at least you can vacuum up all the dirt.

Steam mop the rubber floors, and shop vac up the loose stuff.

My old high school I went to and started my coaching career at is the only one in our area to really have a field house and facilities for football. We had a large building with a JV and a Varsity locker room on each side, coaches office in the middle. Leave the open floor plan, makes game day and practice prep a lot easier. Invest in a few tables to put in the rooms to have space to set out jerseys, pants, equipment or whatever you can think of to have workspace. I cant remember the dimensions right off but in each side we had 45 lockers going around the outside, they were wooden and hung of the floor, small box section on the bottom with a lock for the kids to put away valuables, wall outlets spaced out every so often. Inside each locker were 3 hooks for helmets, pants, etc. Shoulder pads went on top of the lockers. We had benches made by the shop class that were nothing more than picnic benches to go across the room under the lockers, fit perfectly underneath. Both sides had their own bathrooms, 4 showers and a huge white board each. Coaches office had a couple of desks and couches in it for all of the staff. We had our own bathroom and shower. Inside the bathroom we had 3 washers and 2 dryers. We hung up all our game and practice cloth after washing them, found better success with keeping uniforms looking great and not wearing down so much. Just took rope and zig zagged back and forth across the locker room onto s-hooks mounted into the walls after practice or game and they were dry by the next day. We just used the concrete foundation as the floor, never added anything to it. At the end of the season, just take a pressure washer or bucket of hot water and it cleans like new. Some of the stuff like the washers, dryers, shower stuff, and some of the hardware and wood was donated by Lowes without a problem. Some stuff, like the shower dividers and other things were built by coaches or friends of the program. There are a ton of cost saving measures to really help keep this under a reasonable budget. Definitely like this post, new school I joined a good friend who is HC and I am the OC at has almost nothing for the program. This is one of our big long term goals. Got a lot of interest in having one, just need the funding.
