Coaches,
What does a typlical week look like for you during season. Do you practice saturday morning for a few hrs after friday night? What about a bye week. What does that look like? Does anything change?

Typical week. Lets assume we are meeting on Sunday.
Saturday morning-watch previous nights film and take notes to correct problems. Break down opponent film. Sunday Staff meeting, watch film, game plan etc.. 2-8, then another 2 hours or so where I draw scout cards, plan practice, put together scouting report for kids, Monday-Watch film with kids during wt. training class after we lift of previous game. Practice 3-6, alot of indy, introduce opponent and game plan, about 10 mins of team work. meet with staff after practice to finalize stuff. Usually leave around 7. Tuesday-watch film of opponent with kids during wt training after we run. Practice 3-6 full pads. Indy, inside, 7 on 7, team. Usually done about 7 again. Wed-same as Tuesday. Thur-watch film as above, walk thru 3-430. JV game. Home about 11. Friday-depending on home or away, either watch film with kids, or paint the field. After game, watch film, chart tackles, wash uniforms. Home anywhere between midnight and 2 am depending on where game is and what kind of mood I'm in.
I am not HC, but DC.
Bye week we usually give the kids Monday and Friday off. We practice 3 days and really focus on tackling and fundamentals. Begin to introduce our next opponent against our base stuff. Practice length cut down by about 30 min or so.

Assuming a Friday game (Not a given. In our league we may play on Thursday or Saturday):
Sat.: JV game, Varsity players are off. Coaches work at home watching last night's game and our opponent on HUDL. Coaches may have to scout a Sat. afternoon game.
Sunday: Staff meeting at 5 PM. Coordinators will bring tentative game plan for next opponent. Coaches watch Friday's game as a group (We don't platoon), discuss personnel and other issues then finalize game plans.
Monday: DC turns in finalized game plan on paper by noon (The HC is OC):After school (No weights classes or athletic period): Study hall, weight room, hand put paper scout reports/game plans to players, walk through scout report/game plan on field, light conditioning.
Tuesday: Offensive day, full pads.
Wednesday: Defensive day, full pads.
Thursday: Study hall, weights, walk-through, team meal in caf.
Friday: Game.

Coaches, What does a typlical week look like for you during season. Do you practice saturday morning for a few hrs after friday night? What about a bye week. What does that look like? Does anything change? Done it and been apart of staffs that do it different ways, but currently it is like this. Home game Feed players after game in weight room and coaches, wife's, kids, booster club members etc Hopefully while hudl is up loading and we are eating too we get 2 loads of laundry done while watching the localsports cast. Sat Arrive 7:30, Check laundry Watch film, Make some cutups, 8 bad, 16 really good Players arrive at 9 2 groups one runs other lifts then switch Pass out donuts and milk And the watch film from night before, cutups first. No matter where we are at on the film we stop at 10:30 Coaches we stick around about another hour Sunday Coaches meet at 1- till whenever it gets done and finished Monday 6:30-weights 2:15-chalk talk, film Practice till 4:45-5:15 Maybe junior high game or jv at night Tuesday 2:15 chalk talk rest like Monday Wednesday 6:30 weights More of a situational type practice Till 5 Thursday 2:15 Walk through script Film afterwards 5:00 team meal Maybe jv or jh game Friday Team meal at lunch 2:15 film Some game day check out Then pep rally if home game till 3:05 Game time that night

actually we are looking to move back to monday jv's, 15 years ago everyone played on monday then someone switched to saturday morning and everyone followed. We want to switch back to monday and allow the players to be on center stage, no one really shows up to our saturday am jv games. moving them to monday nights will hopefully spark more interest in younger kids to play

We have a special teams/walk through to install game plan on Monday. Tuesday is offensive day, Wednesday is defensive day. Thursday is walk through and JV game. We play Friday nights at 7:00 pm. Give the players off on Saturday, coaches watch film on their own Sunday we have a coaches meeting to watch previous game and game plan
On a bye week we give the players off on Monday and Friday and depending on numbers and injuries we might scrimmage on Thursday of the bye week.

JV games Monday are where its at. At a previous school we'd play the Varsity Team Friday, then their JV on Monday. Let the jv coaches and kids work off the same game plan.

If I was a Sub-Varsity coach I wouldn't want our kids to have two days off (Saturday and Sunday), then have to play a game.
In our state, except for where playing fields are an issue, it is common practice for Freshmen-JVs to play doubleheaders Thursday nights.

We try to platoon the staff and not the players, now there always is a few usually online guys that stay on offensive side of the ball and sometimes some Dbs do too.
And our jv runs the exact stuff varsity does . So up until probably week 5-6, they get the same amount of practice time as varsity does. And we have a separate freshman period . Some of them come after school and practice with the hs and play in jv games and maybe some Kick return .
Plus we do a jv-fresh camp only in the summer with those guys too.

So JVs have five practices and a game each week?
Don't JV coaches have film-game plan duties on weekends too?
Makes more sense for Sub-Varsity to practice Fri-Mon-Tues-Wed, play Thursday.

Actually it would depend, we would usually give our jv's off on monday, they do but our games would be at 10 usually over by 12 so they would still have all day saturday to do film. In our area no one would play a JV game on thursday

For us, JV is typically Mondays as well, although I believe in Iowa it varies by class and maybe even by district within certain classes. Our players have Saturday and Sunday off while coaches have Saturdays to watch film on our own and then we have a staff meeting on Sunday that typically runs 9 a.m. to noon. Then:
Monday: JV game and walkthrough for varsity starters Tuesday/Wednesday: Practice 3:30 until 6:00 early in the season and it gradually tapers off to 5:30. Offense and defense both days Thursday: walk-through from 3:30 to 4:30 and then a team dinner hosted by a local church at 5:30. The last week of the season the JV game will be Thursday Friday: Freshmen/Varsity double header.

We are 4a, we approach it just like a varsity game. The 2 biggest differences , well really 3. Are the time , varsity qtrs vs 10 min jv qtrs, we don't use our big play cards, we hand signal everything but still go fast , and all the coaches are typically on the sideline and no one in the booth. But it's the full onslote (word?) of plays and defenses and special teams that we run on Friday night . And we go into win. Yes we will try to play everyone especially in the first 3 qtrs. but come 4th qtr we are playing to win.

Sunday- Clean up any of our stuff that didn't get cleaned. Staff meeting, 2pm until we're done. Depends on the amount of film we have and our opponent. Been done around 5 before. Got done around 1 am for a playoff game last year, since we had all 10 games plus 2 scrimmages to breakdown. Monday- Film, install, line-up, and a JV game. Tuesday- 85% offense, 15% defense. Wednesday- 85% defense, 15% offense. Thursday- Walk-through, special situations, load up if it's an away game. Stripe and prepare the field if it's home. Friday- Game Saturday- Watch film on our own, possible hangover recovery time.
As far as a bye week, we don't do anything on Sunday. Usually early morning or night practices. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday stay the same. Minus any install stuff we might not have. Give them Thursday and Friday off.

I forgot to add if we play on Thursday, which this fall I think we have 3 on Thursday, we go scout an upcoming opponent. And it's a very very light practice, we might watch some film on opponent of we have any by then.

For us, we don't bring kids in on the weekends at all.
We come in as coaches on Sunday afternoon for 4-8 hours and meet in our offensive/defensive meetings to scout put together the game plan.
School lets out at 2:30. On Monday we have the players on the practice field to begin at 3 with installing the game plan. We do this in shells and shorts. We go until about 5:00ish, then bring them on for position meetings and film until 5:30. Typically, freshmen play on Monday night from 7:00 until 9:30 or 10. Every coach is expected to coach that game. We get done around 10:30. School starts at 7:15 the next morning.
Tuesday we do basically the same schedule, but we go full pads and emphasize offense or defense. We stay on the field until 5:30. We have JV games on Tues. nights with all coaches there, so it's the same schedule as Monday, basically. We usually go home around 10:30 again.
Wednesday is another practice from 3:00 until 5:30. We go full pads. We may have another round of position meetings until 6:00 if we feel it's necessary. We often have s team movie night or some other event scheduled for that night.
Thursday is a short day for varsity. They do a quick run through in shorts until about 4:00, then get dismissed go eat at a church. The JV and freshmen stay with their coaches and have a full practice until 5:30.
Friday is game day. We eat, do laundry, and break down our own film immediately after the game in the coaches' office. We usually go home around 3 or 4 AM. HC usually stays until well past dawn putting away laundry.
Saturday is our day "off," but we all watch film that day, as well.
I figured up that there are about 30-40 hours a week of football responsibilities for each of us on our staff during the season.

Sunday - coaches meeting at 4pm or 7pm whichever works best for jv/V staff. Fresh staff meet on their own.
Monday- 3:20 - film and install on white board. 4:00 defensive field install and walk through, offensive walk through new installs or fix Friday's mistakes, all special teams, 7 on 7!
Tuesday - 3:45-5:45 reg practice
Wednesday - same as Tuesday
Thursday - game script run through plus 10 minute Indy periods at 6:30 am
Friday - 3:30 preface meal, 4:00 focus walk, 4:30 visualization, 4:50-5:30, kids in one of three rooms doing there thing to get ready. 5:30-6:00 tape and treatment from trainer. 6:05-6:40 warm ups, 7:00 K.O.
Saturday - kids have film at 9am after home game, and 10am if we traveled with head coach and DC, off day for assistants. We watch 1 hour of film and we do 1 hour of running and lifting.

We have a few conference games that will keep us out until around midnight when we play them on the road, but thankfully those were home games last year. We still do that after each game, regardless. When you factor in school, we pull a 21-22 hour work day on Friday during the season.

Anybody have Monday as a more "live" practice. We went: Monday -as offense install, individual, inside, 7v7, screen, team, D pursuit and tackling circuit. We had more "live practices (state passed a rule that you can only go live for 30 minutes a day). Full pads Tuesday- was defense install, individual, inside, 7v7, screen D, team, 10 min offense on air. ( full pads) Wednesday- was offense and defense. We would have very short Indy ( correct mistakes from precious days) inside, 7v7, & team (helmets and shoulder pads) Thursday- helmets only, and we would go super fast paced (shorter practice). We would go inside run, 7v7, team, and review all special teams. We would have special teams for each day of the week. Punt would be Monday, punt return Tuesday, etc...
