I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any rules regarding college athletes being able or not being able to work with middle school students during summer workouts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that as long as they are not "recruiting" then there shouldn't be any issues. I have some of my former players who are now in college come help coach spring ball each year.

I don't think it's a problem. I seem to remember Colt McCoy coaching at Peyton Manning's quarterback camp last summer.

I am sure there are different rules in different states - what state are you in?

I don't think they would be in trouble from the KSHSAA side of things I was worried more about the NCAA side.

Call the NCAA and ask them.

Universities all have an NCAA compliance officer, whose job it is to know this crap (I mean crap in its worst sense, there is a problem with the world if the 20 yr old can't help a bunch of 12 year olds without it being a huge recruiting scandal). He should know.

It has been a few years since I was in school, but we had a couple players from the University of Illinois come and work with us. I don't think there would be any kind of problem as long as they aren't being paid.

Im certainly no expert either...but...when i was in college i helped out a whole bunch whenever i was back in town. As far as I know, as long as they aren't paid (or compensated in any way), aren't recruiting, and aren't attempting to represent the university (which is a stupid rule), and their likeness is not used in any way. But you can count on the NCAA to blow anything and everything completely out of proportion and take something innocent and create a mulitple infraction debacle....so that being said I would encourage you to contact the college's Compliance Officer and discuss it with them. Do not count on the player to contact and clear the event, as the coach, you call him and make sure it's cool to proceed (getting it in writing would be even better). I would hate to be the one to rob a college kid or his teammates of an oppurtunity because i was careless and let the NCAA rawdog us all.
