A question for all you coaches,
How many of you have a team twitter account?
I have never been big into the whole twitter thing but I am seeing more and more coaches, and coaches within our school creating one for their teams. If you do have one, what do's and don'ts do you have? Is there anything special you do with it such as player (or lifter) of the week? I am all for it if it aids us in communicating with our players and the community...

I have one... Haven't used it to its full abilities yet but my plan for Spring Ball on is Make every kid get a twitter account, they all have cell phones, they can turn on mobile notifications and get a twitter notification/text whenever I send out a tweet Beats the heck out of trying to send mass texts I can just tweet "Varsity Football: Practice is moved back to 4:00 PM today, spread the word" and I'm done Just have to keep it professional as everyone always says don't be like the 23 year old female teacher posting pics of her smoking weed and referring to her students as jailbait on her twitter account

I think the majority of our kids have it or know how to make 1 but I can tell them to turn on mobile notifications. by the way what is her screen name ?

We have one. A lot of kids and parents follow it. This way, everyone knows what's going on like Bdud said. I personally make sure to keep it professional and informative.

One of my students in my class starting some Twitter feed called OMG Facts. Yes, the OMG Facts. Kid is 19 and isn't working.
I thought that I'd mess around using another one of his ideas. He is the creator of 3rd World Problems as well. I thought, "I can come up with a lot of crap coaches go through". And Coaching Gripes was formed. Thanks for the follows by the way.
I agree with bdud. Get players on Twitter, lock the account, send out stuff that way. The only thing that would go against using Twitter is if your players don't have smartphones. That is where texting is better. Also, there are a lot of free texting apps that you can get and load your players numbers in there.

don't be like the 23 year old female teacher posting pics of her smoking weed and referring to her students as jailbait on her twitter account I wish we could put one together, but our district bars employees from any type of electronic communication with students outside of school due to this sort of thing. Texting, FB, Twitter, and MySpace contact with students is expressly forbidden in our contracts after some teachers have been busted for having relations with students and that stuff got subpoenaed. Some of the county admin would like to ban us from using the internet all together. It's still fun to check the players' tweets after a big game, though. This year, our cross county rivals were talking some serious smack with our boys on Twitter about how this was their year (they haven't won in 6 years). We went down and beat them 49-7 to claim the county trophy. That led to this exchange: Rival Player: "I don't even care about that game. It's ok. I still got God." Our Player: "I have God, too. And a trophy. #countychampionsagain" He tweeted a pic of him kissing the trophy with this. The whole staff had a good laugh with that one.

We use ours for practice information. We also put team and individual achievements on it. Ex: our results from a weight meet I believe it is a great way to get positive things about your program out to the community. I also enjoy keeping up with the teams in our conference on Twitter.

Follow me @coachinggripes tothehouse and @rsrsites Twitter...could be better than Facebook. Twitter IS better then Facebook, there are NO Friend Requests, the Players Follow You and you don't have to see their timeline that's full of nonsense. Twitter is quick and easier then group texts, everyone who follows you will get your message even the kicker!

You don't need a cell phone to post to your account, right?

You can use a smartphone and use the Twitter app...same with a tablet. You can use your computer to post. The answer to your question is "no, you don't need a cellphone to post"

We have one. I've noticed we have more kids on Twitter and more parents on Facebook. We also link the two accounts so we can post on one and the content will automatically post on the other.

This was my response to an earlier, similar thread: "We had a team Facebook page, but parents always would post that so-and-so would be missing that day. Not really an issue in itself, but it seemed to open the floodgates. If one was missing, it seemed they all were coming up with a reason their little Johnny had to miss too. Now, we use Remind101 for our updates (www.remind101.com). They can sign up for text or e-mail messages, most use the text option. We can send messages immediately and easily. The best part is that they have to go out of their way to respond that they are missing practice (in-person usually, sometimes via e-mail). Also, it doesn't make the absences public knowledge for everyone else who is signed up. That way we don't get the snowball effect on absences." There is other good information there about this concept, although it's Facebook centric. Thread link: www.coachhuey.com/thread/57961/page/2/team-facebook

If you just want to use it for posting updates, check out remind101. (although it is very similar to all the other mass texting sites). One of the main differences is that you do not have to plug in their phone numbers. Simply have the students text a code to a number that the website provides and then you are set.
But we do have a team twitter account, we use it for just about everything. Practice updates, recruiting updates, in game tweets, etc.

Have one. Love it.
We have a facebook and Twitter account (also recently created a Remind 101 account that is AWESOME, too).
Facebook is more for the parents and Twitter for the boys.

Ok, just created an account and then had to go back and "unfollow" all the folks it requires you to do so at sign up time.
I've also set my settings to private (want this for ball only) so that players have to request in.
Is this what most of you do?

We have ours set to public so I can't be retested. We use as a form of PR also.

Let me try this again. Ours is public so I can be retweeted. Do you write informational text only? I'm just wondering about bulletin board material. Also, as a complete novice to the Twitter world, how does retweeting help if you have everyone signed up to begin with? Thanks in advance.

let' say we tweet about one of our kids who is going to visit a school. We will tweet it, and then all the different recruiting sites, and our local newspaper will retweet it. But if we had it set to private, only people who follow us can read it but not retweet it. We use to twitter as an avenue to promote our program. Look up our account and see some of the things that we tweet about.
Like during the spring when colleges stop by we will tweet who stopped. We do this for people who follow the program but also as our way of promoting the schools that stop by.

Ok, thanks.
If my primary purpose would be to remind kids that the nurse is available on August 5th to sign health updates, etc., would private be the best way to go?

You needn't go private for that, it just won't be interesting for outsiders and I Doug anyone will retweet it. If you had information you didn't want escaping then private would be best. Though if you're asking 16 year olds to keep secrets on their phones you've got another thing coming.
