I've done this for about a dozen programs (in the spring) don't just visit practice..... - talk with the coach that recruits your area
- bring film of your juniors
- ask if you can just sit in on position meetings (before practice)
- bring all the questions you could have
- show up 2-3 hours before practice and talk with the coaches
.....more important than seeing what they do, develop a relationship with their staff I doubt they'll let you film, though

I was always really jealous of these spring visits, having coached baseball every year. Our staff visited some great places (Alabama, Virginia Tech) and I was stuck waiting out rain delays...

i should add.....everywhere I've been the staffs go out of their way to accommodate you and if you're not talking with the coaches or in meetings, they usually give you free access to their film room.

brophywould you recommend bringing my iPad to take notes on? There are places that won't let you use a cell phone during practice so I wouldn't. You're a guest so err on the side of caution. Bring a notebook.

A notebook should be good. We have a solid relationship with Vandy because they recruited one of our players and he has done very well as a freshman there. He's also knee deep in a complete overhaul there so we are caught up in a great situation. The coaches are very open and helpful and just being there to watch drills and practice organization has been a great experience. If I were you, I would show up, not be a stranger, and I would think your access will only increase.

G often clinics him on the intricacies of running a football program. I'll second the "don't be a stranger" mindset. I think most coaches feel most comfortable and least threatened by guys that will be outgoing, ask questions, stand close to them on the field, etc. The majority of them eat that stuff up as much as we do.

Who doesn't want to know how to charge a futile fight against unending mediocrity? We reinvent the wheel of banging our heads against a wall daily! Seriously though, I can't speak for other programs but I know that both Franklin's and the previous staff's regime were real big on including local high school staffs and allowing us to be around. It may be different at the bigger schools but you'd be amazed at how few coaches are even willing to ask if they can go to a practice or reach out for information. Coaches at all levels love to talk football and show what they are doing, use that resource as much as you can.

Yes I got the same flyer you did. The coaching clinic is $30 per person Attending spring practice and the spring game are free. Just call the number at the bottom of the letter and you can tell them what day you are coming and the names of everyone you're bringing with you. This is just so they know how many to expect i guess They ask that you tell them 2 days in advance, I called wednesday morning to RSVP for going tomorrow night (Friday 3/1)

i definitely will I am a big believer in spreading the intellectual wealth Knowledge unshared is knowledge wasted You'll be able to pick up a ton from those guys! Our staff visited LaTech a couple years back, Coach Likens and Coach Tommerdahl were great. Spent a considerable amount of time with us, offered up full run of the film room...super friendly to us even though we didn't have a kid who could carry coolers at LaTech.

I'm hoping I can talk with their OL coach some We always get wrapped up in scheme but I try to improve in my ability to coach my position more than anything else in the off season

The college team I spent time learning from last spring was better than attending a coaching clinic. It was time well spent.

Update after last night's spring ball visit
Saw some cool stuff at Cal last night
Biggest thing I got was a validation that the things I am trying to do at my school are on point... HC came with me last night (before I came he had always been in some sort of power football offense, the community itself is new to the idea of spread football)so I was trying to show him how the entire staff has bought in to it
The energy from the coaching staff is amazing, that is the key, they all must do lines of blow in the tunnel before coming to the field
Their staff is awesome, very open to talking about things, talked with their inside WR coach for a long time and went over some specifics on a few routes , he was cool
I saw some cool screen things they were doing and they ran something I had never seen, a 4 man version of stick
I am going to write up a blog post some time this weekend when I have time to go a little more in depth into some things I saw that i wasn't already doing

AHHHH a quick call to the snowman is the key to success, I knew there was something we were missing outside of x's and o's!
I like your point about energy but that seems to be one of the harder things to get on a consistent basis at the HS level especially when you can only control your staff so much. Another thing that makes that possible is obviously being very organized but also having your drills set up in advance (or having a system to get them set up in minimal time and not have to reteach them).
Looking forward to that 4 man combo.

Looking forward to that 4 man combo. I was trying to show the HC and keep telling him look at their practice... every coach is going 100 MPH at our practice it is only me I am going to try to take a lot of kids from our varsity team with me next Friday night to show them how they practice... We have some seniors who need a reality check on what "work ethic" means and I have some sophomores who are super talented but need to see what tempo looks like
