Back in 2009 I coached HS and Youth. To be honest I'm not sure how I kept my energy up. I just know on Sunday I was exhausted. And my wife was not happy with me. Since I coached DB for the HS during two-days I only went to the Defensive practice because I had a normal 9-5, but it was very flexible. Once the season got going that is when it got hard for me! Work, then HS practice then youth practice and JV game Thursday night, Varsity game Friday night and Youth game Saturday.

Our youth program feeds into 2 HS. Over the years both school have done clinics for the kids, clinics for the youth coaches. Some of the coaches at both schools have kids in the youth program and help coach at times as well. We also play our home games at one of the high schools. They also have youth night where kids get in free wearing there jersey. Also what helps is both schools have been successful over the last 10+ years, it really helps when the younger players see former players winning state titles.

Well just a little update now that the season is over! Well record wasn't what we wanted it to be...we went 1-6 but the scores don't tell the whole story of how each game went. He started asking more questions and valued my opinion. We made some changes to the offense and defense that helped. He also embraced using a practice plan it kept him on task. In the end he leaned a lot this season.
Thanks

Bob,
To answer your questions...
"Then your suggestion is to not run option. You want to turn it into separate plays & fakes that may resemble triple option but is actually a series."
Yes, my suggestion is to turn it to a series resembling the triple option.
The practice plan is more for him than me. I find that our time is not used wisely and yes I do suffer from not know what coming so I can't plan. I so use to using a practice plan, first time in there hasn't been one in use. I feel that it help a lot.
He did finally install a few more plays! And worked on some others as well.
From a footwork standpoint there was some needed improvement, which I was able to correct and it has helped the mesh and some other aspect of some of the other plays.
Ball security, with all of skill players being 1st or 2nd year players we have had fumbling issue.
It's been a work in progress this season so far. Bob I appreciate your insight!
Thanks,

How old? I would back off and run my groups to make them the best they can be. And wait until you get your ass*s kicked trying to run option, at which point MAYBE you'll have an opportunity to suggest you pre-call the play vs. allow the QB to read it. Just to be a little pessimistic, my prediction is that you won't be given the time you will need/want to practice the D. Then come games the O will suck and the team will get hammered, and he will blame the blocking and the defense that you run. That just seems to be how youth coaching works. The title HC seems to impart some delusions of knowledge to many. How old? The kids are 10-11 the majority are first or 2nd year players, all but 2 out 15. I have backed off over all and work my o-line to get them to be the best they can be, but still make some suggestion here and there! And you where right we haven't practiced much defense at all. We had our first practice focused on defense on Monday, with our first real game on Saturday

An appropriate fix. But unfortunately, I'd say more youth coaches fit this bill than not. And that's coming from a youth coach... Yes, I would have to agree with you on that! And I am a youth coach too....well sure you guys knew that already

[brl] I do have my own group and I will make them the best o-line I can. But we don't have station. I want to help the young coach with out him feeling like I am taking over. That's why I wrote "group or station". Does the coach notice the job you're doing with any of the players of your group?
Are there still other coaches in charge of defense? Since you have only 15 players, what do you do when they work on defense?
Meanwhile, why don't you lay out here some of your suggestions and ideas?
When you write, "The main issue at the moment he is trying to run read option(triple option)," do you mean you're trying to dissuade him from doing so? It's also not clear what you mean by "read option (triple option)". Although the term "read option" is redundant, the meaning I've seen for it is different from triple option.
Yes Bob, he does notice what I am doing with my group. There are 3 of is coaches total. We haven't work much defense yet, he just told me that he wants me run the defense. Yes, the term read option is redundant...I was using his term. It's give, keep or pass option. I'm not necessarily trying to stop him from running it. My suggestion was to take the decision away from the kid, with him making the give, keep or pass decision. A few of my suggestion/ideas are: •Have a practice plan •work on other plays other tham the option •work on footwork •ball security Thanks Bob, hope all this makes sense!

Real quick this is year 12 coaching for me and been a HC, OC and DC. But you have the Oline so yes you have you're own group. [brl] I do have my own group and I will make them the best o-line I can. But we don't have station. I want to help the young coach with out him feeling like I am taking over.

This season the HC that I am coach with a 2nd year coach a has a lot to learn. I have been trying to figure out how to help him best with out him thinking I am trying to take control or step on his toes? I have made suggestions and given ideas just feel like it falling on deaf ears. We have a very inexperience team out of 15 kids 13 are 1st or 2nd year players. The main issue at the moment he is trying to run read option(triple option). Any advice would be great!!!
Thanks,
Coach Smith

Well the season is now over and I ended up not taking the year off! I was ask to be more involved with my sons team and was asked to help another team. Good news is I didn't feel burned out and both teams made the playoffs.

I have decided to take this season off from coaching. This is the first time will be doing this after coaching 12 years straight. Now, I will be slightly involved because my son who is 10 will still be playing. Now how much will I be involved it will depend on who ever his coach will be. And if I end not being involved at that is fine with me as well. I like to hear from you guys that have taken a year off to see what you did with your time.
Thanks,
Mike

We don't have a Middle school team per-say! We have weight classes, with that being said we don't run what our High Schools run. But both High School have said they will help and provide us with anything we need clinics, ect. Some of the HS coaches will come out to our practices and help out as well.

The program that I was a part of, we had 9 varsity coaches and 4 of us coached our JV team on Thursday nights. The other 5 coaches where normally at the games, especially the home games. Our freshman had their own coaching staff.

For our two preseason games I will run my stuff to fine tune and trouble shoot any issues. With that being said with our first preseason game being on 8/30 I don't have much my offense installed, so I will be working my base plays and my bread and butter stuff. .

Great advise guys! Before become a head coach I was on a staff that had been together for 4 years.
I am not opposed to it being just 4 of us especially if I only find two other good ones. Last season with it being 5 of us, I had an OC and an offensive assitant and DC and defensive assistant.... I over saw everything mostly the defense with me being a defensive guy. It allowed me to manage the whole game better, I did call the D the first two games.

I have very little experience with youth football so I'm curious how much it costs a kid to play in your league. If you total up all of the costs- league fees, equipment, fund-raising (I know from experience that Mom and Dad end up buying a lot of those candy bars), team snacks, collections for trophies, etc.- how much does it cost a kid to play? Please mention whether your team is school-affiliated since that may make a difference. In our organization it cost about $220 to play. That is a onetime fee and that cover everything equipment, league fees, and trophies. Other out of pocket cost would be team snacks for the game which would end up being once during the season. Our organization is not affiliated with any schools and the same goes for the other teams in our league. There are some other odd and end cost, like for my sons team we put in $10 for a team pizza party after practice once, that is something that not all the teams do and we paid $20 for coaches gifts.

I coached basically a Middle School team and the majority of the parents didn't say to watch practice. A dad or two would say or come back and watch the 2nd half of practice. Now the team my son played on 8-9 yr olds, most of the parents stayed and watched. My wife didn't say and watch our sons practice because this was his 2nd year playing and my practice was at the field.

There is no great youth offense out there, what ever your running just keep things simple. I my sons team 8-9 yr olds had a about 10(5 left/5 right) plays total and 3/4 formations. I always believe in running what you know and teach the kids the fundamentals of the game at that age.

This show really gives youth coaches a bad name! I couldn't believe some of the things they where telling and having these 8 and 9 year old kids doing. No concern about safety, running tackling drills with the kids 10 yards apart. One coach telling one of his players to take a cheap shot on the center before the ball was snapped and the list goes on and no. I have coached youth ball for 11 years and I have never seen anything that bad. Did not see any teaching or coaching up the kids all. As coach I felt embarrassed watching this crap.

I have my parent meeting at the start of the season. I send out and email first to set the expectations and have a meeting with all the parents the first day of practice to go everything in person and so they can ask questions as well. The reason I send the email first is to make sure that all parents either say the whole practice or comeback by what ever time I set the meeting for.

The pistol is very versatile. We use it as a part of our offense,we didn't run out of it exclusively. Out of it we ran off-tackle and dive for our run game and we man block. For our passing game we just use for our quick game.
