after 2 seasons with a successful highschool program, ive been asked to take on the youth team as well as be a position coach at the HS level.
i gotta say, the first week was EXHAUSTING. 2 practices back to back is crazy.
how many of you have done both HS and Youth at the same time? how do you keep your energy up?

I haven't done that but at my last HC job had two "daddy coaches" who coached both youth league and for us at HS.
They would leave after HS practice twice a week and go to youth practice and also coach games on Saturdays in addition to Sunday meetings for HS program.
When their kids got to HS they dropped involvement with youth program and frankly it made a difference. But who could blame them?
Both were great guys, made major contributions in both areas.
One coached one more year after his son graduated, then left. He took his two weeks vacation time to coach Pre-Season (Two-a-Days) while with HS program.
Other one owns his own business and still coaching at that school even though his kids have been out of HS for several years.
Just cares a lot about community and football program in particular.

I've done it six times over the years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and also this season). Right now, we have high school practice in the mornings so I'm at the high school from 7am until almost noon. Then I drive 30 miles away for youth practices for 2.5 hours (6pm-8:30pm). How do I keep my energy up? I eat like crazy. Workout like crazy. And sleep as much as I can. Once school starts, the practices will be back to back with a 30 mile drive in between them.

Coach, if I remember correctly you are in the Southern Section; is this legal? I thought there were rules against coaching a HS team as well as a JH/Youth team, unless you are coaching the campuses JH squad and HS (I think they have to be a certain distance apart).
I used to coach with a guy who was our OC and then drove 90 minutes back to his home in OC to coach his son's youth team. But he was an ex-NFL Qb who didn't have to work for a living so coaching was his job.

We are in the central. No rule against it for assistant coaches

Back in 2009 I coached HS and Youth. To be honest I'm not sure how I kept my energy up. I just know on Sunday I was exhausted. And my wife was not happy with me. Since I coached DB for the HS during two-days I only went to the Defensive practice because I had a normal 9-5, but it was very flexible. Once the season got going that is when it got hard for me! Work, then HS practice then youth practice and JV game Thursday night, Varsity game Friday night and Youth game Saturday.
