Considering running pistol at middle school level this year and was looking for input from those of you running it? Are you man blocking it or zoning it? What plays are you running out of it? What advantages/benefits do you feel that you gain from the pistol? Would appreciate any feedback from those who are running it.

Veer, trap, counter, sweep, I prefer man to zone, but you could be successful with whatever you coach better. It's very versitle, you can run any scheme you want, dw, sw, wing t, air raid, jet/fly whatever.
The big drawbacks are everything hits slower, and there's less misdirection.
The big advantage is quick passing. Imo

We ran it two years ago and made it to the state finals. We were a one back iz and oz out of multiple formations and motions. Base formation was Ace with a TE. We liked that the back was running downhill vs. a shotgun look. We'd bring the slot in motion and use him as a blocker or move him to trips I used Gibbs' rules on the videos I found from Brophy's site. I had a very good back who could bounce and a big offensive line so we just banged away. I'm looking at going back to it but integrating the veer.

Coach why do you think it hits slower? Ihave heard that before. If you were coming out of an I pistol wouldn't it hit just as fast as if you were coming out of utc I formation?

The pistol is very versatile. We use it as a part of our offense,we didn't run out of it exclusively. Out of it we ran off-tackle and dive for our run game and we man block. For our passing game we just use for our quick game.

It is what it is. It is faster than shotgun but slower than under center. I think the real advantage in middle school is it is an easier snap for the center than a shotgun snap and it is easier for a running back to cut back than in the gun. Everything else is negligible to me.
