Question – are you building relationships with players/potential players off the football field? Some may disagree with me but I think this is very important. I coach at a small private school and our numbers are low. The head of our program (HC) is a brilliant football mind but he knows very little about managing coaches or motivating kids. After last year our program of 60 players (JV and varsity) lost 14 to graduation and 17 that just said, "I'm not coming back." When I asked the HC what he was doing about the numbers he basically said “nothing”. I got on the horn, text, facebook, Instagram, etc. and started working these kids. The consensus was that the HC only cares about what they can do for him on the football field, he doesn’t care about them outside the lines. It took a LOT of greasing but I finally got 6 of the non-returners to come back – and 5 of them are two-way starters! I also got 2 new kids to join football. They came to play because they know I care about them. I keep in touch with them all year long. I’ve been to drama performances (some REALLY bad ones!), music recitals, baseball games, I helped a kid & his single mom move into a new apartment, etc. I have players to my house on Sunday afternoons to watch football, I feed them pizza, we play ping-pong and we have a lot of fun. It’s a pain in the neck sometimes but it has paid off. I’ve now got 26 JV players and 4 coaches. The kids call us “the dirty 30” and they would go into battle with me if I asked. When they know you care and that you’re in their corner they will show up in numbers. Other kids from the school have recently asked if they can play for me this year and I've told them, "Man, I wish you could, we're just too late into the season but I would LOVE to have you next year!" A kid told me, "Next year for sure, I wanna be one of the dirty 30!" We are working towards building relationships on a daily basis....we only have 3 coaches that are on staff guys, so it's a challenge. Thanks for your response, I gained a lot of info from it.

Win more games. Do these kids not get enough playing time on JV? It's not a problem of winning more games, our JV team has lost one game in three years. It's a problem that goes like this, Freshman athlete A comes in at 14 and is not physically developed like Freshman athlete B who is 15. Freshman athlete A works his butt off in the weight room but does not receive significant playing time during the JV season. Freshman athlete A comes back for his sophomore season (now sophomore A) now 15 and is still not as developed as the new freshman (player C) who is 15 as well. Sophomore A decides he isn't interested in football anymore because puts all the work in, comes to all summer lifting, spri g workouts, etc... and receives little playing time. However Sophomore A is a really good baseball player, and contines to workout for baseball. Come junior year, Junior A has now caught up with player B and C bc of his work ethic, now is very developed and could probably start at a couple of positions for us. However due to his distaste for football from his previous experience, he will not give it another try bc he is now receiving division 1 baseball offers.

Coaches,
A great question was brought up tonight after our varsity game by our JV head coach. How can our program keep kids coming back, when the kids won't help the program until possibly their junior year? In today's "instant gratification" society where kids can even turn the video game off and restart if they are losing, how are you guys keeping kids involved?
We are small private school, 620 enrolled, only have 31 varsity players. Our baseball team is really good, so there are athletes (mostly white) who just develop later than the African American players on our team. So many of these kids just said "forget it" after their freshman year and now 1-3 years later won't come back. How can we keep from losing them when they are playing as freshmen?
Our philosophy is play the best to win!!!..so, what mostly seems to our white athletes, are behind when they are freshmen don't get to play...but can help us now. Do we change that philosophy?
Sorry for saying bascaly the same thing over and over. We just got drilled tonight, and I had four total defensive backs suited up...3 sophomores, and a receiver we converted to DB this week, who has a cast on his arm...so I'm venting a little as well.

We are a small private school with an enrollment of 640, that gives 0 athletic scholarships. Tonight we played an area powerhouse with an enrollment of around 2100. It went like this.
1Q Our 1s beat their 1s 7-0
2Q their 1s beat our 2s 28-0
3Q their 2s beat our JV 20-0
4Q our JV beat their JV 16-0
All in all not a bad night, lots of things that we need to work on to get better, but our guys stood toe-to-toe with their guys and competed. Even beating them during even competition portions of the game.

Escape from Baghdad -
1. team forms a big circle. 2. Select two guys who will be the offensive blockers, one defensive "tackler" and one offensive runner.
The "tackler" has one sole purpose in life...to one hand tag the offensive runner. The runners job is to obviously not be tagged.
The two offensive blockers do just that, block the defensive guy from tagging the runner.
Rules are simple, only one blocker can engage the defensive player at a time. If defensive player gets knocked down, you cant hit him until he gets up. The round is over when: A. Defensive player tags the offensive runner. B. Defensive player gives up.
Back when our school was consistently makin playoff runs we would have defenders getting their butts kicked by the blockers but not giving up until we made them. The toughness seemed to rub off on the entire team, and everyone knew that their teammates wouldn't quit on them.

We had a kid on our baseball team this year that I told in order for us to get his time on the 60, we needed to have block scheduling.

There is something you can get to kill them, can't remember the name of it right off hand. It's expensive though, around $160.00 a gallon. You can get it tinted so that you can be sure of the coverage area.
I'm gonna try to remember the name of it and reply again.
But you dilute the concentrate down with water and you cover the field with it. Kills off the stickers.

"Son, you're stiffer than wedding d!ck"
My HC told a kid who was on our line for punt team this, last year. It was loud too because it was raining and we were in the gym. Glad I wasn't eating Cheerios, bc they would have been spit all over the gym floor.

Since you have been around this game, what are some funny things you have heard coaches say either as a player or as a coach.
The one I will never forget is from my senior year of HS. My coach was older and developing vision problems.
We are watching the game film from the previous Friday during our weightlifting class Monday morning. Our punt team has a kid with the last name Stuck on it. The kid gets caught running down field with his head tilted back to the sky trying to find the football and just gets destroyed...I'm talking it was so bad the other kid should have been arrested for child abuse. Anyhow this is the ensuing conversation between my coaches:
HC: ::walking by the film study:: "Whoa!! Coach rewind that back....who is that that gets his head taken off?"
DC: "That's Stuck sir"
HC: ::chuckles to himself:: "well Stuck got stuck"

We just had a steak dinner today for my team. We served green beans, potato salad and an 8-9oz steak for $9 a plate. Made over $2,200.00 profit from 10-3.

Thanks again for all the PMs...
I actually just decided to leave my alma mater for a rival. Eventually want to return there as the AD/HFC someday, but for now, it was time for me to get out and do my own thing.
Wife is happy too as we are moving closer to her family.
All in all, when you have lived somewhere for 28 years, out of 31 total, it's hard to leave...but I couldn't have gotten a better new school to go to.

Bolles was only a regional finalist this year. But year in and year out, they are the cream of the 4A crop.
Where do you coach at Gators1422??

I was a guy who didn't come out until my senior year. I was way way way behind the other players, but being a D1 CF for baseball, the coaches basically told me I was going to CB and M2M coverage. That worked until we played a D1 receiver who ended up going to FSU...lol They would also put me in to run a Go route, reverse, etc..
But if it wasn't for my coaches asking me to play my senior year, I would not be coaching the game now.
Let those guys play, especially if they are athletes

also...what MS program has 75 kids?!?!?!?!?!??! are you hiring? I was as surprised as you are that 75 kids said they wanted to play. However, we have only consistency had 52 at practice. But thats still a large step up from less than the 20 that they had last year

Put this in the wrong thread to begin with....
This is my first head coaching job in football (been a baseball head coach before). This is a middle school gig, as I volunteered to take over our disastrous middle school program after being at the varsity level for five years. I have 72 guys that have shown interest in coming out for our program, as opposed to 19 that played last year. I have a pretty good idea who my LT and QB are, but after that me and my assistants (2 at the MS level....this is gonna be fun. Read: tough) have no clue about most of the other kids.
What would you guys suggest doing the first 2-3 days of spring practice to find out who our dudes are?
Should I teach them our stretching routine that we will go through daily and then let them play powerball to get a Guage of who can do what? Or just start piecing it together, put my LT and QB in their spots and start installing the offense right away, moving guys as we see where they best fit. What are your thoughts?
I have never been in this situation as the places I have been, coaches were already on staff that knew most of the kids and their abilities.

I wanted to include this all in one post but have it separated internally.
What are the main things that you want to have accomplished in the spring?
We normally have a lot of new kids out, so we obviously begin with the basics: stance and start. We stress that first and foremost during the spring. We will teach about 4 formations, and 3-4 pass concepts. We only run zone, power, buck, and jet s9 we get that installed too. But I was wondering what everyone else does? Do you guys spend more time in indy and group, or more time in team? More about conditioning or football?
Now in regards to the summer, we are changing it up this year. Going to do one day of agility drills, one day of Functional Muscle Training (battle ropes, prowlers, med balls, etc..) one day on jump ropes, and one day doing mat drills. Everyday we will lift for the second hour and then go to the field for an hour. Monday thru Thursday. Planning on focusing more on the passing game during the summer since we have 7-on-7s.
What different things do you guys do, as far as, conditioning, lifting, or football-wise during the spring/summer? Or is what you do similar to ours?

I just got a fire hose to use during group time, for simulating an offensive line...while allowing our OL to have more indy time.
My question is...what kind of paint have you guys had success using to paint the T, G, C, G, T on a firehose?

Mine is also a keeper. She makes more money than me (she is a nurse)...she has let one of my player move in with us, he was in a very bad situation. She also let's me have position groups over to our house for dinner on different weeks. Gotta love having a good woman!

i bought one of the inflatable punching bags i posted above (found it cheaper through a different seller on amazon) going out of town during spring break, but after that i will set up my own ghetto shadowman and see how durable it is i am basically gonna beat the crap out of it and try to pop it if it holds up... then i will feel smart for the day i'll let you guys know how it turns out Please send video if you try to tackle this thing...haha Our HC set up the shadowman the first day we got them and was going to show the coaches how he wanted us to utilize them, at full speed. Now he is an in shape 61 years old, played at UF and then for the Steelers....but seeing him almost kiLL himself flying over the top of the shadow man (he hit it too high) was worth every penny he paid for it.

My wife and I actually have different position groups over to my house throughout the season. We feed them a big meal (spaghetti, brisket, BBQ, Pizza, Chili, etc...) at least I know where they are on a Saturday night, and that they are getting fed.

I'm all for showing kids that you care, but texting them on the weekend asking how the weekend went is just asking for trouble. I agree with this. It is possible to care, and show it, while behaving like a coach/teacher (and not a friend). I guess I'm out of touch as I don't have a twitter or facebook or anything like that, but if I did I wouldnt be friends with students; and I don't give my number out to players (what would they need it for anyways). But instead of tweeting them happy bday, I tell them it when I see them in the halls; because I truly want to make their day. And if they look down when I see them, I will ask them how they are doing; because I am genuinely concerned with how they are doing. I will know who they are as not only an athlete but as a person as well; because I like to know them as a person. I guess what I am trying to write, is the best way to show your players that you care (the same with anyone else) is to actually care. If you do, then it will show itself organically in so many ways. What do the kids need your number for anyaway?? Maybe they are in a bad situation and the need a way to get out, so they call their coach. Maybe mom just got in a car wreck and they could use a ride to the hospital. Maybe they just got in a car wreck and are scared out of their minds. Maybe they have something important going on in their life and need a father-figure to talk to. There are many reasons why my players may need my number, this is some examples from the last three years. We print "Think Cards" out every year for our players, so that they have all the coaches numbers if they need us for anything
