Coaches,
I have never been a high school head coach. What exactly is your checklist when taking over a new program? From step 1 to the last step before season starts? Do you meet with the returning players first? As im moving through the ranks here in California, im trying to prepare myself even though im sure I have a few more years to worry about this. Im just curious. Some coaches make the transition effortlessly, and others seem to be up to their ears in problems. So what would your check list look like?

eh.....shouldn't you know this BEFORE you get the job? Brophy I'm putting things together so I'm prepared for when I am offered a HC position. I'm trying g to take advantage of the seniority on this site and experiences so I'm not trying to re invent the wheel.

re the school, make sure they have: Weight room, home field, Hudl, uniforms, up to date gear
before your first parent/player meeting: Create a list of parent/player expectations Create your player/parent comm hierarchy chart Create your off-season calendars/in-season calendars
bring in at least 1 legit coach you already know establish an offense, defense and kicking game and coach up the coaches sign everyone up for Glazier and pick a few sessions that'll help teach what you do
get beers and pizza w your staff and get to know them

Whatever checklist you have understand it will triple as soon as you take the job and you will constantly have to prioritize and adapt it to the actual setting you're in. All of the ideas you're generating on your journey are a great foundation, but understand your first job is likely going to be in a place where you takeover a successful program from within and change will be resisted OR a place that hasn't been successful and you'll have to find creative ways to change that. Long story short, be adaptable without compromising your core philosophies.

One thing I have promised myself is that I will never coach again at a school that doesnt employ an athletic trainer who will be there or be available 5-6 days a week.

I would add athletes to the list. If you're familiar with the program (maybe coached against them before) and know they couldn't produce a winning season if Bill Belichick were coaching them, I would pass unless I were desperate for a job. I can think of several jobs I did not apply for because I knew I couldn't win there.

Financial support from the school? If you can't get it there you better be able to get it from the community.

Make sure the school has a dedicated football PE class. Don't accept a job without one.

Many schools do have PE electives that are open to anybody and they are focused on lifts vital to football though.

Just got my first job as a HC this season......good knight I underestimated the grind! Fundraising, take care of field, equipment, EVERYTHING!!!! My biggest advice be prepared for 90% of your headaches to be with something that is not X's and O's related especially if you are at a small school, I am dying right now to hire a Football Ops guy.

They are suppose to be... but schools like St Joseph and other have then. I even read about them in the news papers including the Detroit Free Press. I think according to the MHSAA they have to cover at least 3 sports, and I also think it is something they have no power to enforce seeing as they don't have any say over curriculum. In Alabama all of the larges schools have them, but the quality varies from school to school, coach to coach and administration to administration.

As the tag-line says, the X's and O's are the easy part. And, just like the military preparing for battle, everything that has to happen to get to the first game, much less play the game, is huge. It's invisible, onerous, taxing, has no discernible value, but has to be done This is a link to my page that has a lot of files that you might find helpful as a new HC. thekesterfamily.com/Football/Links.html

Figure out what things you actually care about and what things you wish you cared about. Like goddam socks. I have way too much crap going on in my life to think about socks. Every once in a while a cranky alum will email t complain about our socks. Je ne care pas. What is the most effective use of your time.

I read that on here all the time that other states don't have an "athletic" or at least a pe "weight lifting period" What about junior hi athletics? Are there periods for those? And I would like a list of states that do or do not have athletic periods. Oklahoma Arkansas And Texas do for sure and then some.

I'm currently where we only have one for game days and it's less than acceptable what he provides. I have a medical background with the navy so I end up dealing with everything.

More or less I just don't want to be forgetting something important because of all of the extras that are being added in. Btw how's the offense this year?

Thank you to all of the coaches that pushed in some advice. I'm looking to move to wyoming. I'm currently in San Diego and there's a lot of entitlement here. There's almost no telling a kid he's wrong.
I'm looking at into a 4a school there right now. Cheyanne central has peeled my intrest due to the last history, the community support, the academic outreach and the facilities.
