Coaches,
Do you do summer with both programs combined? It seems like a great idea. Curious on why or why not?

We do because it's all one program. Many of our JV players are varsity back ups. Can't afford to not have them there.

As it's already been said, I can't see not practicing V/JV, but I've heard of leaving the freshman out of things which makes sense to me in a lot of ways. Here in Kentucky I'll use us as an example; we can start practice July 10....school, like many state's these days starts August 1 or that 1st week of August, so freshmen don't start until then.

We practice both together...As mentioned above the JV's are, in most cases, our Varsity #2's.

What about the weight program? We are combining this year but will have 80 plus kids.

Wish we had that problem, our combined JV/Varsity last year was about 50 kids. Summer weight room attendance averaged around 20 kids partly because it was held in the morning, so we lost any kid in summer school and any kid that needed to work.
Just a suggestion would be to split in to 2 groups. Have them alternate: Day 1: Group A-weights ; Group B-speed/agility Day 2: A-speed/agility ; B-weights
As long as you got the coaches to run 2 things simultaneously, it should work.

We are going 630am to eliminate excuse of college prep courses, SAt class, Summer school, job, etc.

We keep our groups separate it get difficult with 90 kids in the weight room. When we had lower numbers we did it together and it was not a problem.

We practice them together. For the most part. Our summer practices are 5-7 PM, M-T-W-TH. I ask players to average more than 2 sessions per week. The 2 hours, 120 minutes, are divided into 3, 40-minute sessions. Session 1 the JV are in the weight room (or running) and the varsity are running (or in the weight room). Session 2 is reversed, and session 3 is football with everyone together, linemen over there, backs over here. We will likely have 55-65 players in the whole program go given the misses each day it's not like we're working with 65 kids every practice, more like 30 or so which makes it manageable. We go in the afternoons because all the coaches are off-campus and it gets hot here, it hit 112 last summer here in the CA Sierra foothills. But, it's a dry heat so you will mummify, not like down south where they have humidity so you rot.

We've always had them practice together. Like the other, usually our JV players are backups.

We separate them. Varsity lifts, JV runs, then varsity run, JV lifts, then varsity practices O, JV practices D. We do this bc our varsity kids are and should be on a different level in the wt room than our freshmen. Also, our upper classmen are on a different level with their knowledge of our schemes and techniques, so we want to separate them so those young kids can get the appropriate level of instruction. Also helps with numbers in the Wt. room. We have 10 racks, so separating them keeps us from having 6 or 8 kids to a rack.

We have a pretty good sized weight room. Our JV and Varsity lift together. If it was small I would do as someone else said. Conditioning with JV while Varsity lifts then switch.... Not counting our freshmen team, our varsity/JV have anywhere from 40-50 kids. Right now for our winter lifting we are averaging 26 kids a day. We lift 4 days a week and offer 2 sessions 3 of the 4 days.

Coaches, Do you do summer with both programs combined? It seems like a great idea. Curious on why or why not? I've been at schools with 16 kids 9-12 and 180 kids 9-12. Every school I have ever been at has all went together.

Yes, we practice both together. The younger guys learn from the older guys.

Split them up for the S&C
Group A- Both Varsity and JV OL/DL/TE's....aka "Big Butts" Group B- Both Varsity and JV Skill Players....aka "Lil Butts"
One group is in the weight room for about 30 minutes while the other is on the track/field doing agility.
That way the Seniors are passing along knowledge to guys who are playing the same position and they can grind.
Of course, you'll need at least two coaches there to make sure everything is going as planned.

When our numbers have been too large for the weight room, we simply stagger starting times, put one group outside doing skill/conditioning and another inside...there is always a way.
