You know that culture is important...not only in sports, but in every organization where people must work together (which is all of them)!!
What society is missing is tangible ways to actually create that culture.
One of the best leaders in the entire U.S. at creating culture is Randy Jackson at Grapevine High School in Grapevine, Texas.
He has been intentional with using different strategies for his teams, and the results have been astounding! Coach Jackson uses his 26 years of experience to give his readers an enjoyable look into his locker room and how he gets his teams to overachieve.
In his new book (which was just released TODAY), Coach Randy Jackson shares 7 Lessons on Leadership and countless tangible ideas that you can use in your program... Culture Defeats Strategy will teach you:
* How to create and live out your core values * How to use a yearly 4-Quarter Process to enhance your culture * The importance of branding, mission, and vision * How to create a 'Band of Brothers' mentality * How to build meaningful relationships * The benefits of attention to detail and discipline
and much more... Get your copy of Culture Defeats Strategy by Randy Jackson for just $15 today by clicking the link below:

I know you will get several great ideas from Randy's experiences and the stories inside this book.

How have/will you implemented some of his stuff into your program? We borrowed a ton of what is in the book this past season (got a limited copy off of Amazon in August). Primarily creating core values for our program and "selling" them at every opportunity.

I think it will be beneficial to my young coaches. Yes, I already knew those things are important, but it's always nice to see how others approach them. A new idea or 2 are worth the price-to me.

I have read a few business culture books and some Jon Gordon stuff. What does this book have to offer? I ask because that Cain guy who endorsed this book wrote one that I can't even get through. Not good

I want to know how people that are successful package things. How do they break things like culture down. How do they communicate it. How do they teach it. How do they reinforce it.
Above the Line last year had a major impact on our staff and our team. I don't think it was revolutionary in concept. No BCDs wasn't anything different than what Wooden had said. However the idea of teaching the strategies to the Unit Leaders and having them help reinforce those messages was a game changer for us.

I read it and I picked up an idea here and there in the book or it validated something we already do. That's the way I read just about any source. There are things in his book that I can't do where I'm or I'd be fired.

I miss playing in those games more than just about anything!

I think it stems from the time I had detention three days and the dude made me read "the 7 habits of highly effective people" which I thought was really silly but a lot of people enjoyed. Then again what the hell do I know, I have an ingrained distrust for politicians, preachers, car salesman, pyramid schemes, guru's of all worldviews, and pretty much anybody else who tries to build a following around themselves or get rich based on buzz words and being really enthusiastic (ON FIRE BABY!!!!)

Again, don't be a jack a$$, listen w/ an open heart and treat people like you want to be treated..discipline is something you do FOR someone..whoops that's another $13.95

I thought it had some actual actionable ideas that were beneficial to me as a coach and to our players. Coach Jackson talks about how they build mental toughness and drive competitiveness in their program. Everywhere he has been he has built programs that have beaten people they shouldn't beat. What intrigued me was watching them beat a couple of programs they had no business beating. Not just beating, but hammering them. They had a 145 pound kid toting the rock and an offensive line that looked like our freshmen team. But they flat out got after it.
That's the thing about this stuff. There are a lot of people that talk about culture like it's a mystery. Culture is simply the attitudes and behavior attributes of a particular group, team, or organization. It exists whether you build it or you don't. Every day we are building a culture within our programs. You build a culture by design or by chance. It all starts with relationships, but it goes far beyond that. We visited Tom Herman's program at Houston and they talk heavily about culture. I read Urban Meyer's book Above the Line last spring and it was tremendous. Nick Saban and Pete Caroll have great books. What do they all have in common... Culture. They talk about having a process for building your culture.
I learned the hard way how culture mattered. We had 7 D1 kids back early in my career and went damn 5-5. It was a disappointing season because we had the talent to win it all. We had in fighting and leadership issues. We had selfishness. We had really talented kids that were mentally not tough. We researched in the off-season about motivation and building leadership. We visited a very good program and they talked about "culture." That's the point of Randy Jackson's book. Your culture is more important than your strategy in determining your success. Your system doesn't matter if your guys don't play hard. Your talent level doesn't matter if you don't play hard. Your talent doesn't matter if your kids are selfish.
Talent matters. But at the high school level we have little control over our talent. What we can control is how we develop that talent mentally and physically. Can we get our kids to perform at a higher level than what their talent says they should? I highly recommend the book.

Randy is a good guy, a great coach, and a dynamic speaker. If you haven't heard him speak, you need to. I haven't sat down to read his book yet, but there's no doubt it has ideas to help your program.

Let us know. I'm interested in knowing how it compares to Above the Line.l before I buy it. it would have to be a pretty good book to be better than above the line...much of which which comes from Tim and Brian kight can also follow them on Twitter. I had a chance to have a small group clinic w them ...pretty awesome..one small criticism I had from above the line is that he mentions that he was using some of these techniques he learned from Kight while he was at FL. He did not meet the Kights until he got to OSU...Steve Addazio BTW introduced Meyer to the Power of the Unit concept..
