But Ferentz has been there for what, almost 25 years? Clearly, his supporters far outnumber his detractors. Heck…that campus is his personal fiefdom. And Ferentz is certainly viewed as a “successful” head coach who has a great deal of respect. I would argue that brown nosing your bosses doesn't mean you have a lot of support. We all know guys who keep their job despite no apparent reason while wildly successful people get pushed out for no reason. I don’t think that is true in big time college football. No amount of brown nosing is going to keep a head coach on the job for 25 years if he isn’t winning. I’m not saying that Ferentz is a bad coach. What I am saying is that it isn’t fair to suggest Sanders is a bust if Colorado isn’t vying for a national championship within a couple years when there are guys out there like Ferentz who has been pretty good but not great for a really long time.

Don't worry, short of killing a kid, Rush will still find a job. The amount of rope given to some coaches is incredible. And if you're Brian Kelly, you'll still get to have a job even after killing a kid. C’mon…that special teams practice film was invaluable! 😂

If Sanders has a career like Ferentz, will that be good enough to appease his detractors? It hasn't appeased Iowa fans, I doubt it will appease Colorado fans. I heard something on the radio the other day. Apparently, when Colorado hired Deion, they didn’t have the money for his contract. They just planned on the money coming from somewhere, which it obviously did. They sold out season tickets for the first time in 20 years.
I don’t know how success will be defined at Colorado under Sanders. But, there is money pouring into the program now. Boosters and sponsors are lining up to be a part of it. The program has national recognition. Given that, I can’t see Sanders crashing and burning. I don’t think his record matters this year but next year, If he can turn in a modestly successful season, like 6-6, and go to a bowl game, Colorado is going to be on the way. They already have terrific facilities. Now, they have a charismatic head coach who will bring in great players. I think he is going to do well.
Again…the question is how will success be defined? What’s the standard for Sanders to meet? Kirk Ferentz has been at Iowa since Christ was a corporal and he has a handful of conference championship and only reached double-digit wins in 7 seasons and has never really been a contender for a national championship. If Sanders has a career like Ferentz, will that be good enough to appease his detractors?

I don't think it's crazy but can you imagine having to explain that to your AD-alumni if you DON'T then score on 2nd, 3rd or 4th Down?! Also, what if defense DOESN'T use their final TO after 1st Down? Think Belichick-Patriots vs. Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. My thinking on that was if the defense does not use the timeout, the offense lets the clock tick down and then they snap it right before the play clock expires. If the offense doesn't score, they still have 3 timeouts with around 30 second left in regulation, which is an eternity. My thought process was that the home team (the team that took the lead 42-41) had not played great defense all night and was unable to get a stop when needed. And the visiting team only needed a FG. So, I would want them to have as little time as possible.

Was at a D3 game on Saturday night. Back and forth, high-scoring contest. With about 3:30 left in regulation, the visiting team rips off a 70-yard TD run and takes the lead 41-35. However, they miss the extra point but still have 1 timeout remaining. Home team gets the ball back and drives down to the goal line. They have 1st and goal from the 1-yard line with all three timeouts. There is less than a minute left. They punch it in and kick the PAT to take the lead 42-41 with :48 left in regulation.
Here's my question...would it have been crazy for the home team to have taken a knee on 1st down to bleed time off the clock or at least force the visiting team to use their final timeout? Considering the home team had all 3 timeouts remaining, they would still have 3 downs to get the ball in the endzone. If they take a knee on 1st down and then score on 2nd, 3rd, or 4th down and then kick the PAT, the visiting team would get the ball back but with very little time on the clock and no timeouts.
My thinking is that the home team was not playing great defense and the visiting team only needed a FG to win the game.
Any thoughts?

Why don’t people Cal John Gagliardi soft for something similar? His teams at St. John’s won D3 National Championships and they didn’t hit all week except for game day. And this was before the concussion craze. I assume you meant "call" (not 'Cal'). Gagliardi retired in 2012 and died in '18. His situation was different than HS coaches. He was working with older, more mature players who had 3-4 years experience playing HS football when they showed up at St. John's and already knew how to block, tackle, protect themselves, etc. HS coaches have to teach and rep those things. Not to mention, they usually have close to 200 kids on the roster.

This is comedy gold. I can only imagine some of the idiots that have been chosen to lead programs. I last coached high school ball in 2009. REALLY glad social media was not as ubiquitous back then, especially at clinics.

I have to wonder about the context. Perhaps this school has had issues in the past with players being more concerned about looking good than playing good.
With that being said, my kid wore the mouthguard with the fangs and he was a 1st Team All State nose tackle. Pretty sure his coaches weren’t going to bench him over a mouthguard. 😂

Call me old school. I don't give a rat's @$$ what the pros do. Professional football is a business. Big-time college football is a business. And unfortunately...some high schools are now in that very same business. I was a HIGH SCHOOL football coach. It was my responsibility to build a program that enabled my athletes to be competitive with other HIGH SCHOOL football programs. A program that promoted teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, responsibility, accountability, and build character. NOT to develop D1 or professional athletes. A program the athletes, students, parents, school, and school community could be proud of. My responsibility as the coach was to provide an environment where the athletes had the best chance at achieving success. Long story short...I believed we had to be able to run the football on offense. You need a good O Line and RB's to pull it off. That said, I always placed a premium on the RB position, and frankly, I believe a number of boys ended up in my program because of it. Generally agreed with this. Here in NW Illinois, most HS have an enrollment between 200-400 kids. Handful of D3 guys. Maybe a D1 guy who is a genetic freak once a generation. But we are WAY off the recruiting path for Power 5 conferences. Lots of schools still running Wing T, Wishbone, and Power I offenses. At those schools, the RBs are typically the guys who are Prom King...

Does anyone think that the current state of business affairs regarding the RB position is going to filter down/impact HS kids? Kids not wanting to play RB because the position is significantly less valuable at higher levels...which will likely filter down to college levels...which then may filter to HS? Yeah. I think it's a real possibility. I would think that many of those kids who are Power 5 type athletes will not want want to play RB in college, even if that is their best position. I can see most of these kids wanting to play LB in college, assuming that is the defensive position of most HS RBs.

I guess my biggest takeaway from this post is that this coach has it pretty good if this is one of the biggest issues he has to deal with.

Aerating might not do much if the dirt is really packed down. You are going to have to get in there with a rototiller to break up the dirt enough to get something growing. Obvious problem you will have is that you won’t be able to use that part of the field until the grass takes. I would think that if you could get a rototiller in there and get grass seed in this next week and then water it, you should be able to use it by mid-July. Get some yellow police tape and just cordon off the section of the field that you seeded. Coach, how many passes of each row would you take with the tiller? I don’t know if there is a specific number. Depends on how packed down the dirt is. I guess my answer would be to do it until it’s done. The more fine the dirt, the more airspaces and the more fertile it will be. Might be a good project for the ag department, if this school has one.

How much do state championship rings cost? What would stop parents from buying their kid a state championship ring on their own? I'm sure Jostens or whatever would be more than willing to take their money. Not super expensive I am sure- but I don't think the point is that the kid won't have a ring on his mantle. The point is spring is a part of the 2023 season- rings were for the 2022 season. Someone asked earlier "is the coach who announced today that he is leaving the program giving back his ring". Hypothetical here--what if the ring ceremony was in June instead of prior to his announced departure. Right. I know. What I'm saying is that it's not like the school is holding the kids' diplomas or transcripts. If the head coach wants to act like some penny ante dictator, there's nothing he can do if the kids go buy their own rings. Heck, they might have had to buy their own rings anyway. If I was the parent of the baseball player who didn't get his ring, I would make sure to order him an even nicer ring than what the team got.

Has anyone designed a logo for their program? What’s the best way to do it? Apps or websites or software? The logo needs to be in .pdf or vector eps (I have no idea what that is 😂).

The only reason for having a large number of people on the interview committee is so no one person shoulders the blame if the person who is hired doesn’t perform well.

My quick synopsis? 1. He knows football. 2. Winning is the the primary driver of his conscience. Wasn't he paying kids to come play for him as well? I'm guessing that can help make someone successful wherever they end up... I would argue that falls under #2 above. 😉

Imagine being a Christian school and trying to sell Rush Propst to your parents and donors as your AD and co HC. Notre Dame hired Lou Holtz… I read this book my sophomore year of college. I've been a jaded, untrusting a$$hole ever since!

Christians like to win as much as us heathens do. They usually don't hire the antichrist to do it though.

About 15 years ago, I thought about getting certified in SpEd to make myself more marketable. Fortunately, I never did it. If I did, I would have been put in a SpEd classroom and would have never been allowed to leave. I teach Social Sciences (US History, World History, Psychology and International Relations). However, the only openings were in special education and because of my spastic college credits (athletic training, social work, nursing, juvenile justice) I was only 12 credits from getting a master's in special education in the area of ED. My first 4 jobs, I was the only applicant. One of them I became a director of Special ED., When our district had a cohort group all retire together in social studies (4 positions) I was able to move into a classroom. After 7 years in special ed, I have spent the last 16 in regular ed. I had some crazy assignments in special education: 1/2 LD, 1/2 ED and 1/2 alternative program all in the same year- no extra pay. Moved between 3 location one year. Had all corrections kids with no support staff for a semester (felt like I should have been coaching wrestling). Had a semester that I had a half day of 1 on 1 with a behavior kid, he smelled so bad that I started putting Vick's vapor rub up my nose before our afternoon started. GOOD Times. Oof. That’s rough. There is no other smell that can compare to stinky kid. I’m a driver ed teacher. I had a kid once whose smell was a combination of fast food fryer grease, BO, and dirty laundry. Every time he had a driving lesson, I had to leave the window open and then Febreeze the heck out of the car when we got back.

Define “can’t afford right now”. What are the price disparities? Aren't Chromebooks cheaper across the board than a PC or Mac laptop? Yes. But that’s because the Chromebook is not a PC, at least not in the traditional sense. The Chromebook is a cheap way to get on the Internet. It was designed specifically to work with Google Drive apps (Docs, Sheets, etc, etc). So, if you are already a Google Docs user and simply need a machine to access the Internet, check your email, visit websites, watch Netflix, etc, etc, the Chromebook is a good choice. However, if you do anything that requires software or a lot of processing power or hard drive storage, you won’t want a Chromebook.

Had one at my last district. They were issued to all the teachers and kids. Worked great for web based stuff!. Also, there aren’t any moving parts so very few things to worry about breaking or wearing out.
