I thought this is how most teams practiced now.
It is just no live to the ground tackling. You still do lots tackling drills. Still contact. Just try to stay off the ground.

They’ve had some pretty good seasons according to maxpreps. If it works for them and more kids come out then I’m all for it.

A quick whistle is like Pavlov's Dogs. The players get used to it and that is how they will play the game.
It's also how the kids get hurt because they don't expect getting hit. They never learn how to take a hit to how to dish one out.
IMHO this is just a PC practice and not good for the players.
Then again, I am an old school guy and firmly believe that you play the way you practice.

Why don’t people Cal John Gagliardi soft for something similar? His teams at St. John’s won D3 National Championships and they didn’t hit all week except for game day. And this was before the concussion craze.

Watch the video. It looks like a normal practice to me. Agreed. Maybe there is more to it but I’ve never been anywhere that we tackled to the ground in season

And this was before the concussion craze. I assume you meant "call" (not 'Cal'). Gagliardi retired in 2012 and died in '18. His situation was different than HS coaches. He was working with older, more mature players who had 3-4 years experience playing HS football when they showed up at St. John's and already knew how to block, tackle, protect themselves, etc. HS coaches have to teach and rep those things.

Not to mention, they usually have close to 200 kids on the roster.

And this was before the concussion craze. High School players don't compete in D3. One could say that professional teams will, at the most, Thud, too. In this subject I maintain that you can't compare D-3 or pro to H.S. High School kids have to learn, and practice. You teach and drill techniques of course...but they must hit...and do so at full speed to the ground That's how they learn to put the techniques into practical application. Again, JMHO...but I think when you only Thud practice the kids can get hurt because they don't experience real football.

Watch the video. It looks like a normal practice to me. Looks that way to me too. I guess "no contact" means "No tackling to the ground".

We had one of the most physical camps we’ve ever had. Guys were popping and moving. We scrimmaged last Friday and looked like gas dogs with no spark. Now that we’re in season, it’s time to save some of our legs and we’ll only go full pads 1 day out of the week.

This is pretty much what we did everywhere I was a HC. Never had a problem being physical or tackling. Quit the opposite in fact.

I've coached good teams that barely tackled ever in practice and some that did all the time. I've also coached teams that didn't win a game that barely ever tackled in practice and some that did all the time.

Mostly coached at small schools (700 and under). Due to state rules we could only hold two-a-day practices on alternating days. We went full gear in the AM's (defense), uppers in the PM (offense). The single practices alternated (one day defense only - full gear), the next single day (offense - uppers). On the defense days we held tackling circuits for each position. We ran a 4-2 so we had a circuit for the interior guys, a circuit for the ends, a circuit for the ILB's, a circuit for the OS's, and a circuit for the DB's. Each drill in each circuit designed for what each position player would be faced with in a game situation. It was all about teaching technique and utilizing dummies, bags, wheels, popsicles, etc. Always emphasizing Eyes up, Chin up, Wrap and Run. During the AM two-a-day practices we would tackle live for 5 minutes during individual fundamentals sessions. When the season started we would only wear full gear on Mondays and tackle to the ground during individual group fundamentals session for 5 minutes, again, ALWAYS emphasizing Eup/Cup/W&R. Very rarely had practice injuries, and always had a decent tackling team. Also had more kids come out each year.
