Offensively, I think showing them proper stances & starts (step by step, freezing each step) and how the steps are applied in various blocking schemes might show them the importance of fundamentals, regardless of scheme....these are the building blocks of any offense and are often overlooked...

Coachkell,
I guess the question is, what is it that your looking for? Do you have an option background and your comfortable in teaching it and are looking for a way to persuade your staff? Or are you looking for information on the option and how to teach it? If that's the case, IMO playbooks don't do much, you need to learn the option hands on.....if its a matter of persuasion with the staff.....not sure we can help there without knowing the dynamics of the staff...

I'd agree with Dave on some of the things he's pointing out but not for the same reasons. IMO its not necessarily the type of offense (spread, SW, Wing T, Flexbone, "I", etc) being run, but how its being taught by the staff as a unit......one guy may "know it" but its very difficult IMO to be successful unless your staff knows the details of the offense that is being taught. Of course there are "easy" and more difficult offenses.....option and throwing the ball are more difficult and take more time and detail to coach correctly....hence the reason for most youth teams lining up and handing the ball off to the TB running off tackle or sweep........but I do disagree that it can't be done, we have run the option and thrown the ball very well both from under center and gun for several years with Non Select Kids against very competitive teams. The youth programs in our area are extremely competitive on a national level. Last year teams from AZ (CAYFL) won the Jr. Midget National Title and finished 2nd in the Midgets, our Phoenix All Star team also finished 2nd at nationals, losing to Tucson, AZ's All Star Team, so the competition here is solid and a lot of these teams are running some form of spread. I also think that the type of offenses being run is influenced by geography, cold country teams are more prone to power football whereas good weather areas seem to be more apt to throw the football....just my generalized thoughts on it.....as far as 9/10 year olds, I'm currently coaching a team at this level, non select kids in an 8 man league....we are running our same spread option offense that we run with the Midgets....

You can run option out of the Straight T, its been done a ton.....however, I'd look at the concerns of your coaches as valid points.....don't get me wrong, We've run Option forever both under center and from the gun, but you need to have your entire staff on board with you and you need to KNOW HOW to teach the option, option isn't something to "learn as you go" with....having said all that, IF you can get the staff on board and IF you know it, you can be very successful with it if done correctly, its very dependent on details and execution.....

Dave, I've heard McElroy speak a few times also, really enjoy his stuff. He runs a nice XX counter off the Jet to the other slot with GT or Wrap Blocking. Did he have is jetters gaining depth from under center jet or gun jet? Under center IMO it is a necessity (some disagree) to "fishhook" to get depth around the end, from the gun I don't consider it to be as important, more of a feel thing whereas under center it was specifically taught that it was mandatory. Here is a link to a thread with a video of Saddleback running their counter off the jet action, its a nice play... coachhuey.com/index.cgi?board=run&action=display&thread=28183&page=1#262802

We run a lot of jet motion stuff. IMO the timing isn't as tough to get down if you use a few simple rules. 1. Always Go Full Speed. 2. Sweeper determines when he leaves in motion, he's taught to be going full speed behind the tackle (we are shotgun) at the snap of the ball. 3. Always better to be "Late" than "Early".....I don't mind if the QB has to wait a second, I do mind if the sweeper slows down or collisions the snap in the air..... Regardless, it does take a commitment to it and REPS.... here is a clip of our team practicing motions from different start points...we use this drill to SYNC the QB's candence's and to practice timing....not the greatest film but its a good drill for reps.... video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6396193520661008649

I guess they would say if you aint cheating you aint coaching.
I guess there's a catchy reply for everything. Its funny about the timing of things, a few day's ago a kids dad came up and apologized to one of our coaches for what he did with his kid 4 years ago. The kid was on our team however he transferred to another association with a false address. His father accepted cash payments and had his kid picked up daily to go to games in another association. It was a terrible example and message to send to his kid and the other player that went with him. Luckily, he has since seen the error in his ways and it hasn't screwed up his kids attitude, his kid is now a top D1 recruit going into his senior year.

Starting a school from Freshmen up is a great opportunity, don't overlook the need to establish tradition with those kids as the original "plank holders" of the school.

There isn't any doubt that this is the finest site for coaches that is available, absolutely indisputable..... Thanks Huey, Tog and Mod's for your time and passion in making this a great site..... However, I too also find it ironic though that the originator of this thread no longer post's on this site because it now isn't commercially profitable for him to do so.....I can only surmise that he is busy getting ready to go to a clinic or host a clinic for coaches on ways to exploit loopholes........yes, probably politically incorrect for me to post that comment but I guess I've just had enough of it and would prefer to discuss real football.....

I've been in this for 11 years now at the youth level and I marvel at what people do to cheat, really, its pathetic that people stack their teams to win YOUTH football. We take what shows up and coach them up. Yes, we have a good staff and we field good teams, but we DON'T cheat, we COACH. Maybe that sounds high horsed but I've seen just about everything, there are teams that go to extremes to cheat, such as paying players parents, player "shuttle buses", false addresses, false birth certificates, etc, etc...Really, its pathetic.

Our league doesn't have drafts, you get whoever lives within your boundries plus two out of area waivers. Generally, we get the kids from the lower level team from the year before plus anybody who moves in to our area.

Bob brings up an interesting point about the single wing multi directional snaps.
Dave Cisar, can you comment on your experiences with this? Do your centers snap head up or down? I'm curious on this as I may use a sniffer formation next year.....

Individuals get keyed on and shut down, individuals can get hurt, sick, inelligible.....I'll take a bunch of committed "non athletes" who are fundamentally solid over a one "franchise" player any day.

I played TE/DE in HS and TE in college. I coach QB's and LB's and am the OC. At one point or another I've coached every position but prefer coaching the Offensive Line, I don't currently because we have a good Line coach.

Dave Cisar,
This was the first year we've done it, we've just taken our teams in the past when they've qualified for nationals. It was an 8th grade only national all star tournament. The weird thing was the kids could be from Junior Midgets, Midgets and All American weight classes as long as they were 8th grade, no restrictions other than that. All of our kids were from Midgets, we ended up facing mostly All American weight teams. Simply put, they were all HUGE. As it turned out though, the size differences wasn't much of a factor. That DVD I sent you of the -3yd kick was against a big team from Chicago, after clinic season take a look at it, they had some monsters.

We put together an all star team that went to Florida this year. Very similar to the format that Doug described as far as selection/coaching. We had 6 two hour long practices, rotated practice fields to even up the driving required. IMO it was a great experience for the kids, they enjoyed it and did well (finished 2nd). I think that the different staff's working together was a good thing, it was fun.

Yes, I'd assume Midwest or further away teams wouldn't be able to do it and go to Florida, perhaps runner up teams that didn't qualify for Florida might be able to. I know what your saying money wise, we've sent teams to Florida the last two years and its every bit of 20-25K to go. The date is pretty much set as our playoffs and championships are before that. We usually will go to CA and play the first week of December so that weeks out also and nationals are the following week.

The league I'm in is looking at putting together an invitational tournament on Thanksgiving Weekend this year in Phoenix, AZ. Invitations would be presented to state champions first, then runner ups, etc... As I understand it would be open to various leagues. This is usually an open weekend and is two weeks before nationals so it can fill in a time void there. If your interested or have suggestions let me know.

I'll go back a few years when we did HAVE a kid with a FOOT. 8th grade kid (soccer kid- actually thought he was signing up for futbol...lol...true story....) could kick a high, deep ball to the 10 consistently and sometimes into the endzone....no kidding...unreal, never seen one like him before or after, kid had a D1 leg on a puny 120lb 8th grade body. We kicked every kick deep and usually pinned the other team inside the twenty, talk about a HUGE advantage. Kid kicked a 47 yard FG. We gave up an average of just over 3 points per game that year, and no doubt that leg had a big part in it. Sad part, his dad wouldn't let him play football in high school, didn't want his Futbol career to be interfered with.

IMO only you and your staff know your team and your teams capabilities, so toss might have been the best choice for your team whereas veer would be the best for mine. Thats why you put in the hours that you do and as a result know the abilities of your team to execute. Even thought the fans might think its a great call to run a sprintout pass to trips, realistically it makes no sense if your team can't execute it. Bottom line, go with what your team does best.

There also is a lot of cross over conversations between catagories, say a thread starts as shotgun veer, some under center guys chime in about flexbone veer, then some wishbone guys, then some guys chime in on Play Action off veer, complimentary plays off veer.....its all good conversation and can be applied between various systems, to be so specific on topics within threads would eliminate the sharing of ideas between systems.....just my opinion.....

you can spend alot of money on whiteboards or you can go to home depot and buy a "whiteboard" in 4'x8' for about 10 bucks. I bought the $200 dollar one before I knew any better, I'll be glad to sell it and go to Home Depot myself.....LOL

I prefer athletic linemen over size, we pull alot and run the option so quick feet is important. Having said that, work that 5'11-280lb'er down to 240-250 and you'll have a road grader that can move. If you don't pull, put the big kid at guard where he's always going to double team on the veer and the smaller at tackle who has to get the LB's...

Air, since your referring to military tactics, outflanking an enemy requires the enemy to be held in place with the threat of a frontal assault so that you can outflank them. I'd suggest reading about the bluffs of a frontal assault as well as the bluffed amphibious landings used to allow Swartzkopf's left end run...........having a legit threat to attack the middle of the field is just as important as attacking horizontally or vertically.

Phantom......Amen!
Airman, I don't know about your program, but we aren't fortunate enough to have linemen just appear. We build our linemen from ground up. We take those "blobs" your talking about and run them through the ringer, pound them on a forge and make them into LINEMEN. It does take effort on their part and coaching on ours, but it works. And yes, we are a spread team that throws the football.
